Severe FPS drops and lag

Configuration Info: CPU: Intel Core i5-3340 @ 3.10GHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB RAM: 8GB DDR4 GPU Driver Version: 416.34 Operating System: Window 10 (version 1803) Issue: There are random frame drops throughout the game, where it goes from 60 to between 10-30 for a few seconds. It's most pronounced when lots of enemies spawn or players are nearby, when it frequently dips every 30 seconds, but it does happen randomly (eg. even while doing nothing in orbit). However it's worst in PvP, where anytime another player is nearby it dips between 5-10 and stays there until they leave or I die, and on respawn it promptly goes back to 60. Lag is also an issue, with players zipping randomly across the map. Like the performance issue, this is something I only experience with Destiny 2; everything else works fine, so I think I can rule out my connection acting up. I think it's worth noting that when I installed the demo a year ago, it ran buttery smooth. In fact the game was running fine until 2 hours in when these issues started. Attempted solutions: 1) Changing settings to low and disabling things like chromatic aberration and anti-aliasing, and capping the framerate at 60. No change at all (FWIW I can run most other games at medium-high settings, including TW3, Fornite, Diablo III and Skyrim). 2) Decreased mouse polling rate to 125Hz from 1000Hz. 3) Tried experimenting between Windowed, Borderless and Fullscreen - no difference in performance. 4) Disabled fullscreen optimizations. 5) Disabled VSYNC. Edit - Just wanted to mention that this got cleared up after a few PC reboots. I'm not sure why it happened but it never happened since.

Do not dismiss this as an unimportant troubleshooting fix because it is very likely that this is what causes these issues for everyone. Basically, something on your computer is filling up your free memory in the background and when it gets full your system will start to run slower. The obvious causes are either Windows Superfetch process or Plex Media Server. This cached memory is not shown as 'used' memory on Task Manager, it's shown as 'Cached' on the Performance tab in Task Manager. You clear your memory cache when you restart your computer which is why performance is good again for a few hours. People think this is a bug with the game or a "memory leak", it isn't. It's something that will affect all your games but is way more noticeable in D2 for some reason. Try disabling Superfetch; google search "How to disable superfetch". Restart your computer after and see if you still have the problem. It's easy and takes less than a minute. It's safe to disable and just as easy to enable again after. If you have Plex on your computer then that will also fill the memory cache when it runs it's scheduled tasks. If you use Plex, set the start and end times for scheduled tasks as small as possible (1 hour) and disable all the options. It should fill the memory cache less frequently then. It could be another program that is causing it. If so, you need to identify which one by looking at running processes when the memory cache starts to fill up. Destiny 2 does not fill the memory cache like this itself. ---------------------------------------------- If you want to know what Superfetch is.... Superfetch fills your unused RAM over time with data it "thinks" you are going to want to use based on your history and activity. For example, if you use Microsoft Word a lot, it will make sure the data for it is loaded into the RAM all the time. This isn't good for gamers because it will cache data for various things, including the game you are currently playing, until your RAM is 100% full, even for systems with massive amounts of RAM. Then, it has to dump data to make room for data a game is requesting on demand which kind of bottlenecks your whole system.

  • Mmm servers are about to go thru maintenance for the end of the event so that's a possibility. But did you just reinstall the game or is this you coming back after a year of inactivity?
