You must have gotten spectacularly unlucky with the RNG. I have two already (Queenbreaker and Trinity Ghoul) and a small pile of Y1 exotics and Y2 dups (dup Queenbreaker and Ace).
That being said we could use some kind of dup protection. There is a reason we have Xur and fated engrams.

You want unlucky I just had my 15th exotic drop - 14 have been year one duplicates.
