**Edit** Thanks to everyone who checked it out and much love to those who commented or voted, Its only been up for 15 hours and we've surpassed 300 votes that's dope as hell. It's not really easy or practical to build a following on this platform (reddit maybe?) but I just so you guys know I plan to continue writing posts like these and will get very political in regards to D2. Thx again ;)
This melee ability on the new gunslinger's WoTC subclass is something that I'm glad to see introduced to gunslingers. With first playing this class I had experimented with numerous PvE builds, some that were so enjoyable to use that I questioned myself If I was actually doing anything significant during the activity or if the fun I was having was at the expense of not maximizing effectiveness.
But god was I wrong, the synergy of the subclass abilities enable you to receive knife energy in some way with every neutral ability including the melee itself. the stacking 15 second trance of 12--->6--->4 second recharge rates without melee mods allows a very consistent string of knife tricks. and the damage is so surprisingly high, that it becomes wasteful to use a primary during any time you have it charged. Anyways, I could go on forever with the mods perks and exotics and even event modifiers that can be used to optimize this already insane class tree. speaking of which: brawler, use this class with brawler active. you can thank me later.
With all of the hype that manifested from the PvE havoc this SC was causing, I felt inclined to jump in a crucible match and ditch my usual and generic bottom tree arcstrider, and instead use the knifey guy. After the PvE experience with this ability I had no doubt in my mind that this subclass would be a reason to never play anything different in comp quickplay or trials. In the opening minute of the game I encountered an "alpha proto titan" who was bee-lining toward me at a relative speed of mach 3 with the intention of high fiving me in the face with his knee cap. Upon seeing and then recognizing what was coming my way, Immediately without any conscious decision my anti-shoulder charge instincts from back in D1 had kicked in faster than the v-tec in a decked out Civic SI. I landed a quick body shot with my better devils and chucked the knifes. It was very briefly that I felt excited and confident that this classic combo I once used long ago would take him out easily. I even lined them up considerably well, but to see two of them land and hit for 90 ish damage (39 to the body and 51 to the head) had me thinking it was a harmless error. But to my dismay, it surely wasn't. For a while I kept using em hoping it was a glitch and the "actual" damage values would be entirely different, just to try rationalizing my disbelief that this was the intended PvP damage of knife trick. In the end, the two sides of this story really just made me contemplate whether experiencing any sort of happiness was worth the inevitable disappointment that was to come afterwards.
I know that was super dramatic which I'm sorry for, and I spent way more time making this than I intended to. But that can be attributed the high dose of vyvanse I took earlier in the evening to help me study for a chemistry quiz.
But my point is that it's upsetting to see knife trick do such abysmal damage in the crucible. 50 damage to the head is sad, but 39 to the body is just pathetic. don't forget the spread pattern of the knives which restricts the range at which you can land three knives on a single target too. The maximum potential damage at 150+burn is okay on paper, but you aren't going to land three headshots 95% of the time you use it. To hit all three as crits is very rare, and I don't know why bungie is so scared of it being able to occasionally one shot if they are willing to give warlocks the handheld supernova. And really a damage buff is not asking much. Also it wouldn't hurt to show the other two throwing knife variations some love too. cause back in d1 a regular throwing knife headshot did 158 if i remember correctly. and throwing knife was in no way an overpowered ability at any point in d1. Well, the community would definitely concur, and if they didn't then they probably just thought the ability was flat out bad. Bungie didn't think so, and that became evident when they decided to nerf the throwing knife. I guess they wanted to rub some salt into the wounds of the hunters ie. (me) who had just helplessly witnessed the brutal and unforgettable murder of the beloved bladedancer **rest easy**. So yea, throwing knives were once kinda okay but more so just fun to use and now they aren't. So Bungie, it's up to you to make them adequate or proficient or excellent or at least worth taking the time to throw them when you have the option to use a gun.

I actually like the throwing knives as they are but I will admit that they do need a damage buff, not a big one though where they one shot.

1 ReplyAll the hunter's throwing knives melees need a buff.
-
1 ReplyHey when your super is over powered your other abilities arent as good got it ? Good
-
3 RepliesWhat about a charge up mechanic to reduce the spread and increase damage? That would make sense being a ohk to the head imo.
-
3 RepliesThey need to make throwing knifes a 1 hit kill at close range with their damage falling off as it goes further. You know, how throwing an object normally works
-
1 ReplyHunter throwing knives have to be a one-hit-kill with headshots. I get it not being like that for body shots, but if they're gonna bring back the one-hit-kill Titan melees, they should let the Hunter melees not be so worthless.
-
Unlike the one headshot people are saying this would be good you would be very close to get a kill but not 100 if you don’t have like 15 health one could burn to to death but yeah 80 ish would get all the hunters to shut up about shoulder charge
-
Something like 80 or 90 to the head 50 to the body per knife would be great. It’s much more difficult to use than something like shoulder charge and due to the nature of that version of knives it requires more than a bit of risk to land a few of them.
-
Nah... I actually might be alright with a slight buff, but the values you are suggesting a ridiculous. How about Body - 45 Head - 65 That way 3 to body is a quick cleanup and landing one or 2 to head plus body leaves them absolute. The frequency that you have this melee up is too often especially considering your dodge option can fully recharge it. I'm also against precision hit kills for red throwing knife unless it also has a charge up similar to voidlock grenades.
-
80 crit damage seems fair enough for me. With how many knives you have available to you thru gamblers dodge and playing with fire, it can’t be too strong.
-
I think like proccing the melting point except it's purple there should be some hoops to jump through for 1hk things. Like be honest throwing knives are easy asf to land.something like dodge bear an enemy you've damaged. (This gives gemni Jesters a suddenly use cause it tags people with a 2 when blinding) to get triple melee damage until you get a kill or a miss or 5 seconds pass. We all know things like orphidia spathe and sixth coyote would be the only exotics people used for this build so making it damage then dodge adds gemni Jesters to it.

4 RepliesMy best advice is get a buddy and do a private match and test against the two classes. I know you can OHK, though I've only done it once, when all three crit. It's part of being a Hunter: timing + reaction + distance + the weight of an unladen sparrow carrying a coconut across the Atlantic Ocean.

Knife Trick and Tempest Strike need PvP buffs.
-
4 RepliesNo. Only because blade barrage is the 2nd best super in crucible behind nova warp. That's the trade off you should have to pay. God tier super = mediocre/poor neutral game.
-
4 RepliesHunters Always seeking a PvP crutch.
-
2 RepliesThrowing knife in pvp on all gunslinger skill trees are abysmal. Complete waste to use and is easily the worst PvP melee in d2
-
4 RepliesYou get knives back too quickly for it to one shot. Knife hits and they start coming back. Dodge and its back 100%. Then you got the chest piece that gives you 2.
-
2 RepliesIt should only be able to kill someone instantly if it's a headshot and if all 3 knives hit. Otherwise it would be too powerful. Although some people have mentioned that usually only 2 of the 3 knives hit, they could make it so that the longer you hold the melee, the thinner the spread gets until you throw the knives.
-
Run it with gambler’s dodge. You fire it as a lead up and then shotgun outside the normal range or something like that. You’ll have you dodge back rinse and repeat and you’ll be getting hate mail for days.
-
Top tree knife should do 120 on body, 140 on head Knife Trick should do 40x3 for body, 80x3 for crits Bottom tree should have no aim assist but be a OHK. Or keep the aim assist and let it do 158, and after a precision throwing knife kill it should momentarily be a precision OHK. (2 - 4 seconds)
-
Honestly if they allowed for some way to reduce the fan spread (maybe make it optional to have a wide fan spread or make it a very narrow spread) the damage values wouldn’t be too bad. Or perhaps some form of magnetism/tracking so that you’re guaranteed at least two knife hits or something
-
3 RepliesI'm ok with these melee one hitting. It's 3 knifes after all. Warlocks have a one hit in one subclass (hand held supernova) Titans have a one hit in every subclass (shoulder charge) it's only fair hunters get a one hit.
-
All throwing knives need a buff tbh, the explosive one is pretty damn useful for hitting weak targets behind cover (throw knive at floor, explosion kills them) It’d be amazing if was viable in other ways. Considering the animation for a throwing knife takes a good two shots with any weapon to do.

6 RepliesEdited by ShadowWing48: 10/17/2018 3:24:49 PM100 is too much. That means you don't need 100% accuracy. 80 is fine. 80x3=240 Its pretty easy to land two knives so most of the time you're looking at a guaranteed 160 damage. However knife trick should not be an OHK with how easy it is to hit and the perk combination, especially when you have an exotic such as Ophidia Spathe AND the Gambler's Dodge class ability. I personally don't even think it needs a buff. It does it's job perfectly for me in PvP and I see the same. Its not meant to be opener and I think a lot of people are forgetting that. Its only an opener with certain builds. Save it for when someone tries to push you after you damage them. Then you'll start seeing your results get better when you use knife trick and throwing knives. The Hunter ability that should be an OHK is the Arcstaff's Tempest Strike. Under no circumstances should that not OHK.

1 ReplyAsking for a hunter buff? Lmaoooo Hillary has a better chance of becoming president before bungie even thinks about that.
-
2 RepliesLmao. Glad I'm not the only one who writes enormous forum posts when the Vyvanse kicks in. xD
