When you complete an action in campaign you receive a set number of cr for each commendation involved. When those commendations reach silver the cr per action is removed. People know you receive less every time but this is why.
For instance, that cut scene method involves 2. One yields 150, the other 50. This is why it goes from 200 to 50 than 0.
Gruntpacolypse:To do this go to Matchmaking-Firefight-Score Attack- then proceed to Gruntpacolypse on the desired map, the map i use is Corvette but you can pick your poison.
Commendations: Varying between maps you might be able to get more but credits that are full proof on all maps for this method are:
Longshot- Kill with a precision weapon (DMR)
Numbers Game-multikills
Methodical- any type of spree
Dome Inspector-Headshots
Target Practice- Kill infantry-class enemies
*Trigger Happy- Kill with small arms
--------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: You should average between 1000-1200 between games with getting additional Cr for the commendations completed within the round. the games will average at around 10 minutes so after a while it does get boring but, this will be played for longterm so should be saved last since other methods go faster.*adding the pistol every so often adds up for trigger happy thanks to Maytch and if corvette isn't your style try checking this video out for a quick step by step on Holdout.

TacoHalo: Your kill is my kill at least with the AIs it is, a perfect collection of teamwork founded by no other than TacoHalo himself. Load up Long Night of Silence from mission start(yes the space level), no skulls, on normal. Now storm the beaches. Kill everything in your path and follow the shore till you hit the pier where a dropship will leave a nice wraith for you. Take out the gunner and jump in the turret to make the elite pop out of the drivers seat, after he gets out kill him too, this is to make sure that the wraith is for the most part damage free. Take the wraith back to the beach and boost around the rocks to go up to the facility and proceed to the sandbags and clear the area till you get the checkpoint and turn around facing the beach to get another checkpoint and whether or not you want one a marine will or should have already taken the position of the turret. Just let your AI buddy take out the covenant to get the following commendantions:
Leadership Element- Kill a leader-class enemy
Spec Ops- Kill a specialist-class enemy
War Machine-Kill with your vehicle
Cannon Fodder-Kill an infantry-class enemy
---------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: I hadn't even tried the method and when first told about it thought it was stupid and immediately dismissed it and others followed, but one brave soul tried it and with great satisfaction, according to Pixel Push3r this method averages out to 4 kills a covie and even with dying the method reloads you back to the checkpoint so it naturally becomes a safe easy ride that can be done for the times where you just need a break and sleep in between the tough stuff, for a better retelling go here.

Flawless Cowboy: otherwise known as the cutscene glitch or cutscene farming. I've only done it on Winter Contingency a couple of times but i can say this as a fact, difficulty between legendary and heroic does nothing, skulls do nothing.
The level has to be loaded from start. Play through the entire level, go to the room where you and Jorge will kill the zealot and then push the button to activate the cutscene. Almost 3-4 second after you push the button press start and click "save and quit". you get you Cr hen go back into the menu and resume game. as if god answered your prayers no playing just more Cr. as anyone would guess the affected commendation is:
Flawless Cowboy-complete a level on heroic or harder without dying
Demon-complete a level
---------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: To ONYX the commendation you need to do this 300 times, the Cr for the commendation goes up but, for level completion it gradually goes down. It will proceed from 200 to 50 and most likely will gradually get lower, its one that isn't worth doing for too long, it take about 30 second to do it (because of loading) so anyone could do this in a quick 3 hour sitting and proceed to something greater. To put your hearts at ease

ONI Sword Base: I'm pretty sure this is the method that started all the controversy of Cr Farming. Now to start this level off let's add some skulls. "1.Cowbell" and "2.Thunderstorm" along with any additional desired skull should be used for this particular method.
1.big explosions
2.promote the covenant troops to higher ranks
When the level starts run up the right ramp, don't fight the elite and run pass him and drop to the grassy ledge so you can proceed around the corner(don't stay on the ledge there is this light thing that gets in the way and the grunts just pretty much destroy you, but after that it's ok to get back on the ledge). run down into the "barricade" and pick up the target locator, if the check point came already no big deal but if it didn't then proceed to get it and back up against the slanted door, wait for the check point to finish then aim for the cluster of covenant troops to get a barrage(10 or more) of kills. don't bother doing it again because you'll activate another checkpoint just reload to the previous check point and repeat, over and over again till you ONYX the following commendations:
Splash Damage- Kill an enemy with a heavy weapon
Walking Tank- Earn a multikill
Super Soldier- Earn any type of spree
Leadership Element- Kill a leader-class enemy
Spec Ops- Kill a specialist-class enemy
---------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: Aside from getting the checkpoint right if that's what you care about this method goes in varying speeds, some commendations will be taken out incredibly fast while others will be much slower. Splash Damage will obviously be taken out first but others like Spec Ops and Leadership Element will feel like an eternity and you'll probably not bother with it. It's best to get this done and out of the way so you can proceed to actually having fun as it does get to feel slow.

Banshee: There are many places to kill the banshee or any other vehicular type covenant troop. I'll show you two that work as to my knowledge with the commendations being:
Right of Way-Destroy a vehicle
War Machine-Kill with your vehicle
1.Long Night Of Solace- Alpha Checkpoint, go to the cruiser and blow an engine to activate the checkpoint, after that go beneath the cruiser to find a nest of birds waiting to be taken out, revert the checkpoint. lather rinse repeat.
2.Pillar of Autumn-Raly Point Bravo the very last part where you take control of the big gun kill as many phantoms, spirits, and banshees. It's safe to assume if it flies you should kill it. kill as many things before the covenant cruiser shoots and revert to last checkpoint.
3.New Alexandria- just fly around and destroy, no checkpoints no limits just search and destroy the endless supply of banshee
--------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: Never tried this method yet but heard it's effective, for pillar of autumn i'm not sure if you'll get the war machine commendation but it seems like it'll go by pretty fast with Right of Way.

Nice Arm.A: On Winter Contingency run past everything to the jeep(get stickies) drive to where the spirit drops off a load of grunts (get out just before to activate the checkpoint), then get kills with one throw of the grenade and enjoy the benefits, revert to the last checkpoint and resume. This can also be done in Gruntpacolypse
Nice Arm.B: Pretty much any where you can find a grenade will help but along with Winter Contingency you can also perform this back at Oni Sword Base, but instead of using your target locator your using the mighty throw of a baseball play, although this probably won't take out the big elites you'll get the grunts in between or you can work at both at the same time.
Nice Arm-kill with a grenade
---------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: credit for this goes to RABBIT 00 and Maytch,.
Posted by: xXx FONTO xXx I don't know if anyone can confirm this for me, but I tried the TL and cut scene again last night and they appear to be fixed. Meaning that with the TL, when you fire the first shot and get the first few kills it triggers a checkpoint immediately instead of waiting like before. And with the cut scene when I resume campaign after save and quit it rolls over to the start of the next level instead of going to black screen and menu. Maybe its just me doing something wrong, but I have onyx for flawless cowboy and a couple other commendations from previous farming attempts, and was trying to get demon but with no luck.
I noted something similar during Skeleton Crew last night, but I was playing Co-op. We weren't farming, we were just working on improving my brother's headshot skill w/ the pistol against the Grunts and Zealots at the end w/ the sword and 2 w/ the Concusion Rifles. That's a great section to repeat, IMO. In fact, all of Bravo on Winter Contingency is great. You've got a solid variety of weapons and enemies and you can work on your cadence w/ pistols, DMR's and Needle Rifles against this variety in open space, mid-range and close quarters.

I wish Bungie would just say something about this. 23 pages and no official word on what is a bannable offense and what isn't.

hhmmm this actually is a good strategy to rank from warrent officer g3 to captain so i dont care much it is annoying to se modders and hackers with inclement weather

My understanding is that Bungie's ok with farming done by you legitimately playing the game. Legitimate meaning that you've got the controller in your hand, you're not manipulating the network and you're following the spirit of hte law here. Anything automated is bannable. But you're right, there is grey area here because even if the controller is in your hands, you're not actually playing. I noted this was possible on my own. I did not choose to use this method until I saw here that it was in a list of "approved" farming methods. I didn't do much research and I didn't really read the support given for why this particular method was "ok" so that's on me and I'll accept the consequences if there are any. Hopefully, if this turns out to be actionable, they wouldn't do a full reset and would just penalize myself and the others who have done this the cR that was generated by it. But I'd expect that if it's actionable that a full reset would probably be in order, which at this point would gimp my rank progress entirely considering where I'm at with other commendations. In truth, I only did it to get the Onyx commendations as I knew the cR earn was insignificant. That said, everyone considering this needs to do their due dilligence in reading up on what Bungie's saying about bannable actions and make their own decision. And be comfortable with it. The old rule of thumb is that if you have to question whether something's right, then it's probably not. And given the small amount of cR this option provides, it's probably not worth the aggravation or risk. I'd recommend not opening yourself up to that risk. [Edited on 10.06.2010 7:00 AM PDT]

Ooook.... I tried doingto flawless cowboy, but the save point is a bit weird... i don't need to shoot the last five bad guys in the area with the switch... The checkpoint IS the cutscene, so i tried twice to load it and i get credits each time and my commendation is progressing, but i'm not doing anything.. i thought the reason you wouldn't get reset/banned is because you are actually playing. I would like to get some credits this way but i'm afraid of i might get reset since it's just the cutscene and when i skip it i get credits.. I've seen a bunch of other guys on the forum with the commendation at onyx and they haven't been reset, would be nice to know for sure though
-
I might try it as long as it is legal to the Bungie Law.
-
Whenever I do that HaloTaco thing Carter hops into my turret, and he then refuses to shoot anything. Whenever I wait till the marines come and get a marine in then go over the sandbags it doesn't checkpoint, HaloTaco doesn't work.

Cutscene Glitch (solo-campaign only): Settings: Scoring -> On, FFA; Team, doesn't matter. Skulls -> doesn't matter 1. Run through the "first" mission on Heroic+. 2. "Save and Quit" while in the cinematic. [Post-game Credits] [Returns you to Campaign Lobby] 3. 'Resume Solo Campaign' [Game loads content] ...45sec later... [Post-game Credits] < Repeat Step 3 >

I fail. [Edited on 10.06.2010 2:26 AM PDT]

EDIT: yes. and it should never send you to the next level just back to the campaign menu screen. make sure scoring is on and you went through the menu. [Edited on 10.06.2010 2:18 AM PDT]
Posted by: DirectorSe7en Someone please explain how this gets to Onyx in a "3 Hour sitting" as stated above. From what I understand, you play the whole first level from mission start on Heroic. Then, if you've died you just quit after hitting the button at the end. I run past EVERYTHING possible on the first level and it still takes about 15 minutes each time. And almost everytime I never die so I don't even need to save and quit. Am I doing something wrong? Or is the "save and quit" method for people who find a way to die on the first level.
after you hit the switch that brings the final cutscene, wait about 3 seconds then hit start before the cutscene shows up. save and quit. then resume from last checkpoint. it gives you flawless cowboy and demon every time you resume game. press y to skip the cutscene.

Is the cutscene griding patched or something? Because i do it correctly and when i get back to the campaign lobby it says start game instead of resume at the last checkpoint with 4 grunts and sword elite. Helppp.

Thanks Fate, I wasn't aware of that fact at all. And I agree with the other guy, blam it I want my Dark Crystal Ball helmet!

What about for offline people?

Since there is a lot of commendations in firefight as well, is there a firefight credit farming guide as well? Whats the best way to get each commendation for firefight? I would think grunapoc would be best for headshot, target practice, methodicall, longshot, possibly pull the pin and vehicular. I found the best way to get Vehicular in Firefight GruntApoc is to do the following. B Choose Beachhead, run straight down to the warthog with the rocket launchers, drive it up a little bit on the left side wall. Park it get in the gunner n -blam!- up all the grunts u can with it. if anyone does this and knows a beter place to put the warthog without getting grenaded or owned, and killing the grunts faster. id llike to know
