Last Wish and Kings Fall are the two best raids: Change my mind

Before we start note I said "BEST" not "most fun". Last wish and Kings Fall have a few things in common that make them the best. They both have quite a good amount of encounters as well as bosses. They both have a large and visually pleasing overall map with great atmosphere. Kings Fall goes for a purely dark theme and somewhat grand scale while Last Wish goes for both a light and dark theme with grand scale. Both have a very large final boss with a pleasing death. Never in Destiny was I more pleased than when I saw Oryxs corpse floating off into space after so many attempts (and multiple days considering this was the first raid boss that took me more than the first day). Similarly Rivens death is also pleasing as we get to run down her throat and shoot the blight/heart (the running the heart section is also a nice surprise/ bonus that I've been waiting for. Sort of an escape the raid scenario) Both have mechanics that require a lot of teamwork but are definitely not overly complicated. And they also require a bit of mobility and moving around the map which is much better than just standing in tiny spots damaging bosses. The main argument I saw against both of these two raids was that they took too long and had annoying mechanics that were complicated to coordinate (another reason some people complained they didn't like Leviathan). I disagree wholeheartedly with these people. Maybe it took a week or so to teach people but if you had patience people have now developed great numbering systems for every encounter. Finally I would just like to say that so many people call Wrath of The Machine or VoG the best raid... why? I can maybe see how they're more fun in some ways. And I know the Destiny community loves to rush through getting loot but I mean come on... Wrath was beaten in what like 2 hours maybe or something? The hard mode world first was like under an hour? The final boss was great sure. and some other sections were fun and fresh too, but it doesn't truly challenge you or even get you in the raid atmosphere. It feels like a constant speed run. And let's be honest by today's standards VoG is a cakewalk. Consider atheons mechanics... they're a joke... teleport and shoot oracles then damage... if that released today with all our experience, even if we had to guess, and even if we were underpowered, we would have had worlds first teams done in the blink of an eye. We've grown as a community with challenges so they needed to make the encounters do the same to keep up. It's that simple.

The best Raid so far, has got to be Wrath of the Machine. Kings Fall and Last Wish are great, but they don't have as high replay value as some other raids. They aren't sluggish per say but both raids do drag on at certain moments. Encounters like the Totems, King's Fall opening, Morgeth, Golgoroth, and some of the jumping puzzles from either raid are tedious and unexciting. Just because a Raid is hard or mechanic heavy doesn't mean it's good. Then there are problems which both Raids have in common. Encounters like Oryx, and Shuro Chi take the same amount of time no matter how good you are at those encounters, it completely halts the path of progression and turns off players from those raids. As for grand scale, King's Fall doesnt present that for most of the Raid. Only at the end does its appeal start to draw the players. Enclosed spaces isn't grand scale, your in a King's Ascendant Plane and you rumage through his cellar. Last Wish ignores the mistakes that Kings Fall made in this aspect, the Raid feels more open than its predecessor. Wrath is a really good Raid, but because of the intensity and story it presents. An Evil Lord known as Spider Jesus (who has complete control of the Twizzler Virus) resides in his hidden castle, you and five others assault the Keep, but are unable to enter by conventional means. You fight his second in command and come across Spider Jesus's Death Zamboni. You discover that Spider Jesus has retreated to his underground bunker where he is strongest. You give chase and find him and when you think you defeated him, he shows his true form. There is not a single part of the raid where it feels like it is dragging on. It feels like an adventure. As for the 2 hour completion, it was beaten by people who play the game for a living, that and it was easy to level up in Rise of Iron through Strikes. It took my group around 5-6 hours to get to the Siege Engine and I'd say we're a solid team.

I was pretty impressed with Last Wish. It played better than what it looked like on Youtube. King's Fall was a really good raid, no doubt, but it takes second to VoG for me. I really like the Vex as an enemy and enjoy the world designs that surround their "species".

          • Note that the best dlcs in Destiny history, Kings Fall and Forsaken, are like the continuation of a story. Kings Fall, is Crotas chapter two, same for Forsaken being Prison of Elders continuation. I know this have nothing to do with the Raid, but as we’re talking about the best dlcs, Osiris, Warmind, Rise of Iron and SIVA having the worst story and lore, just happened to have mediocre Strikes. When a good dlc is made, the Raid is at the same level.

            • If this is referencing the show I think, then no matter what I say you'll just argue that my definitions of "best," "raid," and "King's Fall" are wrong.

You are wrong there is only one raid that can be called the best and greatest in history.... The raid on Lindisfarne On 8 June 793, the terrified inhabitants of the small Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne found themselves under attack. Norse longboats landed on the holy island with the intention of plundering its monastery’s riches. Treasures were stolen, religious relics destroyed and monks murdered, in a brutal and shocking start to centuries of Viking activity in Britain. Anglo-Saxon monasteries made rich pickings for Viking raiders. The British Isles’ religious communities could offer little resistance to the plundering of their treasures. Furthermore, as pagans, the Viking attackers had no religious qualms about desecrating sacred sites. Lindisfarne was not the first time Scandinavians had visited on the British Isles. While they had largely come to trade peacefully, there had been sporadic violence. In 789 three ships of Norsemen had landed on the coast of the kingdom of Wessex and murdered one of the king’s officials. Yet the merciless raid on Lindisfarne’s monastery was different – it was an unprecedented brutal strike right at the heart of Anglo-Saxon Christianity. The shocking event spread fear and panic across Christian Europe. The scholar Alcuin argued that God, as vengeance on the immoral people of the kingdom of Northumbria, had sent the raiders. The attack was not easily forgotten. In the ninth century, Lindisfarne’s Anglo-Saxon residents memorialised the violence by carving the scenes of bloodshed onto a stone grave marker. The stone, now kept in Lindisfarne’s museum, is known as the ‘Viking Domesday Stone’. Just as Christian communities had feared, Lindisfarne heralded the beginning of further death and destruction, as Viking raids on Britain escalated over the following years.

                  • Kings fall was fine but last wish is by far the worst raid I have ever played. The Loot is utter garbage and the disappointing final boss fight is just lame. I really hope they go back to destiny 1 raids so I can go back to actually enjoy raiding. I really miss my VOG and machines wraith

                    • It would be impossible to change your mind, there’s nothing to be said about any other raid that lw or kf doesn’t have or has something better Come on man, everyone knows kf and lw are the best, then sos, tie between vog and wotm, then leviathan, crotas end, and finally EOW. I challenge bungie to come out with a raid that breaks the top 5

                    • Nope. VOG was the best because it was by far the most fun and the original destiny raid with some of the best rewards in the game. Sure it was easy but it still had complete thumbless kids dying over and over forcing you to be a hero. I'll never forget my VOG days but I'll forget most other destiny memories. Prison of elders before swords was extremely fun aswell but that's for a different topic.

                    • People eagerly jump on the assumption that Vault of Glass has little more than nostalgia going for it. Atheon used to be very satisfying to defeat. At it’s original peak of relevance the “normal” enemies within the encounter demanded optimal planning and knowledge of the AI positioning and spawn-timing. Most of us, upon the raid’s release, entered in at level 26. The final encounter’s adds mashed our potatoes so much that people decided it’d be more worthwhile to push Atheon off the ledge to get gear to level up before going back in for the legitimate clear. One thing needs to be made clear, though: no matter how hard I try, it’s near impossible for me to fully take off those rose-tinted shades. When I think back on getting to equip the Aegis and relic-cutting through the air - and when I remember my Vex Mythoclast drop, or my double Helmet drop - I still get excited. So many that immediately deemed Crota’s End an over-glorified Strike also immediately labeled Wrath of the Machine as a masterpiece. I was never a huge fan of the raid myself, but I appreciated the encounters and the music. It wasn’t until Age of Triumph that I understood why the Rise of Iron raid was so beloved: it was the gear! The armor sets were new and fresh, the weapons were powerful and enticing - the perfect mix of a loot pool. Getting that Genesis Chain was an awesome feeling, a rewarding feeling. Crota’s End offered this is certain places, such as getting the Black Hammer - but anytime I was around someone who had gotten their first one to drop, they were never all that excited. To me, Vault of Glass will always be my favorite raid - because the only thing better than the loot and that after-encounter euphoria were the memories.
*giraffe noise*
• While King’s Fall is my personal favorite, I think the fun factor, length, scale, accessibility, and loot of Wrath of the Machine make it the overall best Raid. King’s Fall could be rough with pick up groups, and I remember the Golgoroth fight straight up dismantling teams. Unpopular opinion, Vault definitely isn’t as good as people remember. There’s so many “sit here, shoot thing” encounters, but both bosses are fun.

                        • Surprised you got as many down votes as you did. But that last sentence VoG is BS. Sure, the Atheon encounter mechanics seem simple now, but I dare say you forget that all the bots were at minimum 2 levels above you (when levels meant something). First night I went in at level 25 or 26, and got stomped cause I basically did 0 damage. Survivability has NEVER meant again what it did in the VoG. Think about the supers back then too. Nothing other than Arcblade was a roaming super. VoG was great not just because of how it was designed but because of what the character options were at the time. KF and LW are great, I'm not giving you a down vote, but VoG deserves more respect.
