How are more people not shit talking this? The prime engram negates the benefits of most powerful engrams.
You get a prime engram to drop as a chest piece, that increases your chest by at least 5 light higher than your LL. This guarantees that every "powerful" engram you get will just be trashed if it becomes a chest piece. Why? Because "powerful" gear only drops at your light level, or 1 light higher...
It isn't so bad when it happens with armor pieces, but if your guns were gained from prime engrams, it guarantees that you will have a plethora of weapons that do absolutely nothing to help increase your level.
You actually level faster by ignoring the tiny bump that a prime engram gives you and you just focus on leveling from powerful gear.

All powerful gear is like that, you will always get stuff at or below your most powerful piece of gear

1 ReplyBe honest… You smoked a little something before writing this, didn’t you? See kids, this is why you shouldn’t do drugs.

1 ReplyYou’re insanely confused. Imagine you’re 531. You get a 536 helmet from a prime engram. It doesn’t bump you up a level. You then get a 532 helmet, now useless. But if you hadn’t got the prime engram, you would have only a 532 helm which is worse overall. If the 536 drop did bump you up, you’d be at 532. Another helm might drop at 533. Less powerful than your current helm but without the prime engram you’d have 3 fewer points on your helm and one less point overall.

2 RepliesPrime engrams aren't the problem. The issue is the backwards progression and that the tiers of rewards don't actually prepare you for the next tier of activities which leads to ridiculous posts on LFG like must be 550, or must have x super, or Gambit must have sleeper. It frustrates players who are trying to reach that next tier and hit that cap wall and struggle to progress. IF anything, each tier of rewards should only be small gains in power, but are ultimately preparing you to move into the next tier of activities. Your dailies, weeklies, bounties, etc should get you up to 540 - 550 then be worthless (maybe turn into mat grinds for infusions), but then you are ready for Nightfalls and the Dreaming City. THe Dreaming City then prepares you for raids which will get you up to 600. That is the problem with progression.

Edited by Zalib: 9/24/2018 3:36:55 PMThe problem isn't engrams it's gear distribution. Doesn't matter how much of a light bump you get if you keep getting gear that is in the same slot as something you've previously gotten it means basically nothing. This was optimized with blue gear I believe to give you sense that you're always progressing but it's lacking a little with powerful drops. This was only made worse by the Edge Transit problem.

6 RepliesSorry, but I fail to see how getting a +5 item to drop is a bad thing. Most people I talk to prioritize their +5 drops (Dreaming City, etc) when completing weekly challenges.

I really wish there was somewhere **in the game** that I could read what the rules are for rewards. Such as: What exact relative LL do primes drop at? What exact relative LL do weekly milestone powerfuls drop at? (and these are different across different activities such as DC, flashpoint, strikes, Nightfall, and crucible) What exact relative LL do bounty powerfuls drop at? What exact relative LL do raid powerfuls drop at? What exact relative LL do certain events stop dropping higher after LL 520? If I play on two characters of the same class, which activities can I actually get rewards for? What LL do random drops drop at in the nightfall? the raid? What LL do exotic quests drop at? Why did I have to be told by my clan 3 weeks after wasting a lot of time that it's basically worthless to play two Titans? Why isn't this mentioned IN THE GAME. After doing nightfall on Titan 1, I switch to Titan 2 and the nightfall still lists that i should get a POWERFUL engram as my reward but upon completion I get a low level drop. Why is your UI so incredibly -blam!-ed Bungie?

1 ReplyI have been doing dreaming city first then everything else. My titan can hit 563. Get the big drops first, then the others drop higher because your overall light has increased. Sure, you might still get dupes in areas you don't need, but they will balance out the rest of your gear.

2 RepliesDo you do your math diligently before talking sheest ?

I’m just glad that I’m not already near top power level. It’s making every level jump actually feel like a reward and not just a shoulder shrug...
