I know this is going to be a long-standing issue, both in the US and abroad, so I thought I'd put my thoughts on guns and gun control down. Note that these experiences may differ from yours.
Like many in parts of the US, I didn't grow up with guns in the house. My parents weren't cops, but neither were they drug dealers. Growing up in the NYC metro area, there was no need to have a gun. I guess that has colored my position on guns, as my only exposure to guns was hearing them outside my window every night growing up in the ghetto. I always feared that a stray bullet would fly through a wall or window and kill me or one of my loved ones, so I thought, "Why would I ever buy one of those things if all they can do is kill?" So I was very anti-gun. I mean, I wanted to get rid of them altogether.
But over time, I came to realize through conversations with people across the country that a gun has no moral alignment. To use D&D terms, a gun is true neutral, neither lawful nor chaotic, neither good nor evil. Just as a sword is only as good or evil as the wielder, so too is a gun. If you want to prevent gun violence, you teach the person behind the gun about gun safety.
You want a gun? Great, but prove that you know how to properly care for, load, unload, and store a gun to minimize injury to innocents. Of the many gun-related deaths I've read about, those involving an accident with the gun involved improper storage, as do some of the shootings like Sandy Hook. For example, why would you keep a gun loaded under the bed if there are children in the house? Why would you keep the gun safe unlocked if you know your son has mental-health problems and has been proven to be a violent risk to others? A lot of this country's problems can be solved or prevented with good old-fashioned common sense, and gun violence is no exception.

1 ReplyThe argument isnt whether they are good or bad. Rather, its whether their absence would be good or bad. A gun in itself may be neutral, dependent on the will of the user, however you miss the fact that the deadliness of a neutral means (ie guns, swords etc) plays a huge part in its affect on society. Someone can go rampage with a sword and injure a few people but someone with a gun can go rampage and kill dozens.

I love the D&D reference. Also I appreciate your experience with firearms and share your sentiment that if you own them, then you should know how to maintain and handle them. My experience was quite different than yours though. My father wasn’t a cop or ex-military either. He was an avid outdoorsman and fed his family quite often by what he drug out of the woods and river or grew in out extensive garden. He owned many different kinds of firearms for many different reasons. His heirlooms and more expensive rifles and antique pistols he kept in locked display cases or in his gun vault. But this is what throws A LOT of folks, especially these days, for a loop. He kept 2 pistols and 2 shotguns in various rooms of the house, hidden or high up though they were, they were accessible for defense of the home. From young ages he taught me and my 3 siblings how to respect and handle firearms. We knew 2 things would happen if we touched any of those guns, 1. We could die or accidentally kill someone or 2. Dad was going to tan our hide. Those weapons were only to be used in the rare, and thankfully it never happened, occasion that someone uninvited tried getting into our home. I’m saying all of this getting to this point. Involved and responsible PARENTING was the reason me and my siblings grew up to be adults who learned from example how to cope with what the world throws at you, even with accessibility to firearms. So to reiterate your point, guns are a very neutral instrument, it’s the person wielding it that we as a society must examine. We don’t have a 2A problem.

3 RepliesGive everyone a gun! And 5 years mandatory military service! /s

4 RepliesMinimise injury to innocents.

1 ReplyYou raise good points, but since zero chance of any new gun control measures in U.S., It's kind of moot.

5 RepliesEdited by DINO DELUSIONAL: 9/13/2018 2:59:23 AMI personally believe banning certain weapons isn't going to do anything. Just because it looks military style doesn't mean a person looking to defend themselves and their family is going to use it to shoot up some random Walmart. The majority of liberal politicians (also some conservatives) and most of the Parkland survivors tend to overlook the concept of firearms safety by stating that banning the AR-15 and most semi automatic rifles are going to solve all gun violence problems in the US. According to FBI statistics only 4% of deaths every year are committed using a semi automatic rifle. This means you are more likely to win the lottery twice than to get killed by an AR-15 style rifle. While I do agree that we do need more firearms safety education, and we don't really need bump stocks (regular semi autos are just fine) banning something I would need to defend myself is not an option for saving lives.

1 ReplyHi, Phil Swift here with Flex Tape! The super strong waterproof tape that can instantly patch, bond, seal, and repair! Flex Tape is no ordinary tape. It's triple thick adhesive virtually welds itself to surfaces, instantly stopping the toughest leaks. Leaky pipes can cause MAJOR damage, but flex tape grips on tight and bonds instantly. PLUS, Flex Tape's powerful adhesive is so strong, it even works underwater! Now you can repair leaks in pools and spas without draining them. Flex Tape is perfect for marine, campers, and RVs. Flex Tape is super strong and once it's on, it holds on tight. And for emergency auto repair, Flex Tape keeps it's grip even in the toughest conditions. Big storms can cause big damage, but Flex Tape comes super wide so you can easily fix large holes. To show you the power of Flex Tape, I SAWED THIS BOAT IN HALF! and repaired it with only Flex Tape. Not only does Flex Tape's powerful adhesive hold the boat together, but it creates a super strong, water-tight seal so the inside is completely dry. YEE DOGGIE! Just cut, peel, stick, and seal. Imagine everything you can do with the power of Flex Tape!
