What we know from about the Drifter from his Lore Book
While reading the lore book for the Drifter, the true purpose to the Drifter’s game is luring out the followers of Dredgen Yor, his shadows.
We find out the giant relic that the Drifter is carrying around contains and holds taken in an environment they can not escape. As said in the comments, its actually a small piece of the Ascendent Relm that is contained.
We find the fate of one of Dredgen Yor’s followers.
Perhaps the most important, we see the Destiny Story and Lore take a turn.
[Edit] While rereading Grimlore, I remember the Shin Malphur was known as the Renegade Hunter, notice how each lore tab are written by a Renegade’s Observation of a Drifter. This implies that Shin Malphur is not the Drifter but the one who is monitoring him .

5 RepliesBased on Cayde's message for the Drifter, he's definitely not Shin Malphur. In fact Gambit seems like something devised to lure "the man with the Golden Gun" out. It's not entirely clear if the Drifter is Dregden Yor or simply a follower of his. We know he has Ghost from some of the Gambit gear lore tabs. Yor's Ghost was let go, but was never destroyed. It's not impossible that his Ghost found him after Shin melted his face with the first Golden Gun ever and revived him. Perhaps the first GG shot was so powerful it burned away some of his corruption. But that's all speculation, nothing is really proven in game.

1 ReplyEdited by Nemesis Black: 9/13/2018 8:00:57 AMSee I was onboard with Drifter being Dredgen Vale but now I think about the event name...Gambit...and if Shin Malphur were executing a ploy to lure out the Shadows of Yor using our Guardians as bait...well...that would also meet the literal definition of a Gambit in the chess sense were you sacrifice a pawn to take out a more valuable target. Actually, after checking Ishtar C. and giving the lore a proper read I'm thinking this: a) Drifter is Dredgen Vale and he's working with Shin Malphur against the Shadows 'cause he thinks they've gone to far. or possibly, and it's a stretch... b) Shin Malphur talking in 3rd Person about Drifter as a character outside himself to separate his true intent from his cover-story. I think this is much less likely. Either way Shin is the narrator. I realise I'm probably stating the obvious here.

3 RepliesDo we know how to get lore entries for The Drifters Gambit book?
-
1 ReplyWell I think it's the malfises that has a interesting snippet from the drifter to your character about the golden gunslinger that can't be beaten.
-
4 RepliesTo everyone saying, the drifter is NOT one of the shadows of yor. He left our system at the beginning of the city age, before the shadows of yor had even been founded.
-
2 RepliesThe Drifter is Dredgen Vale, anyone who can't extract this from the lore is an idiot. I have read all the lore from the drifters gambit and wish people would stop posting snippets and getting half a story. Lore is important because it puts all these bullshit theories below to rest.

8 RepliesShin mulpher died tho. Couldn't be. I might be wrong. Gonna take a look

1 ReplyI can't wait to earn my Dredgen title so Shin can try to kill me once he is in the game.

Yeah Shin is seen talking with the Drifter. In fact the Drifter gives Shin the location of a Shadow. However Shin doesn't fully trust the Drifter. The Drifter is likely using Shin and the Shadows for his own purposes as he has other Guardians in the past. Being able to control the taken is a pretty cool ability though.

3 RepliesEdited by SkinPoppeR: 9/12/2018 12:56:44 AMI don’t think it is The Ascended Realm. It is literally a piece of a moon. The Drifter found tombs put there by The Darkness on a icy moon near Saturn. These tombs had creatures older than any hive or taken seen. He controls them with his Motes of Darkness we help create now in Gambit with his Darkness machine. Shin is watching him. Waiting for The Shadows of Yor to expose themselves so he can kill them.

1 ReplyHas anyone looked that the creature behind him I know that has to be the Darkness In the lore these creatures were encased in a structure
