HDR Brightness Issues

Is anyone else on Xbox One X experiencing extreme difficulty seeing in low lighting in Destiny 2? I started noticing this the most during the Whisper Mission. Some of the jumping puzzle is near impossible when trying to reach chests or make it to the Oracles.

  • Yes. I noticed this when upgrading to Xbox One X. It worked fine with my PS4 Pro.

    • BLUF: Set the DESTINY brightness to 4 or 5 in SDR, THEN go into your TV settings (primarily brightness, possibly contrast) and try fussing with them until you see the tricorn symbol. See below for random background. This worked for me on both my XB1 and PS4, both standard versions (I.E. not X/Pro) Alright, so if this doesn't work for anyone and seems obvious or dumb, I apologize ahead of time. I've been struggling with this for a while and played with every possible setting on both PS4 and XB1 side of things, and I couldn't even get the game to show me the D2 tricorn symbol on the left when adjusting brightness on SDR, nor the middle/left symbol when adjusting the whites on HDR. Turns out it was my TV settings. >.< When I first got the TV I fussed with the brightness because I tend to keep my room dark and didn't want a 43" sunspot blinding me. What I did not realize was that brightness and backlight strength are two different things nowadays, which seems like a very "duh" thing, but coming from a time of clunky huge widescreen boxes to finally owning my first 4k, this was news to me. So after messing with a bunch of different TV settings and getting nowhere, I finally tried messing with the TV brightness and blam! instantly fixed.

    • Having worked in the A/V industry for years this puzzled me as well. Try adjusting your gamma on your TV, brightness will just cause a haze cloudy look. I have been out of the field for a while so HDR is rather new. However I have a Ben Q monitor and a 4k Sony Bravia that supports HDR. Make sure you have the proper HDR settings capable on your TV as they differ. You can see this in settings and display on your PS4. I had to enable mine after I did an update on my TV (I found surprising). I found that there are different types of HDR settings. Everything related to how your picture works is threw your TV, and gamma is your best bet too retain picture quality.

Absolutely! I am too. My graphics are fundamentally different after the update on the Xbox One X. I note that Bungie have stated that the brightness and saturation have been adjusted throughout the game to match the theme of Forsaken. Edit: I think part of it is the old brightness settings are still applying under the surface, and hasn't been re-centred, and the new black point and white point settings need a "middle" or "restore default" setting in the menu to return them to the centre as well. I've got my brightness at the point where it's playable now but I've got really heavy grain/snow static in some dark textures which wasn't there previously. What I did: I turned off HDR on the Xbox One X - this gave me access to the legacy Brightness slider in the Destiny menu again. I moved that to the middle, then quit Destiny, then turned HDR on again, then went back into Destiny and back into the HDR menu and got both the Black point and the White point sliders as close to the middle as I could.

See if this helps: Turn off HDR mode on TV for your xbox input (or altogether) Reboot box and lauch destiny and go to brightness setting, it will be the standard one rather than black and white levels Move brightness up one level Leave destiny and turn HDR back on Launch Destiny and readjust black and white levels in brightess. The legacy brightess setting still has an effect when using HDR which is really annoying as it even keeps the settings across consoles. I play on a One X on 4K HDR at home and One S on HD elsewhere and it really caused horrible brightness problems.

      • Hi there. Thank you for your report. You may want to disable HDR on your console and TV, then turn them both back on again to see if things improve.

        • Same. I've disabled HDR on Destiny, not just for this reason, but because clips and screenshots look terrible. Other games look fine in HDR, but not this one. PS4 Pro, btw.

          • Yes. I have an one x as well and it's definitely dark in many caves. I don't want to turn brightness up anymore because then everything else is too bright and washed out..

            • I’m on PS4 pro and having the same issues it would seem judging on a few responses I’ve had from a few people replying to me this is a widespread issue , and I agree something needs to be addressed with it , it’s bordering on unplayable.

              • The HDR looks a lot better on One X than it does on the Pro. I never bothered to change the settings. I'm always messing with it on the Pro though.

                • The game saves the SDR brightness setting while your in HDR. I had to switch back and forth to get it just right. They need to just include a main brightness adjustment with the HDR adjustment.

                    • Trust me it has nothing to do with Destiny 2 or PS4 Pro. I don’t use HDR because you cannot record in HDR properly. https://www.youtube.com/zNeRo

                      • There is a hidden brightness adjustment in the HDR settings in the menu on the game. Took me forever to find it but it helps a lot.
