I know it is far-fetched but:
- He is a human
- He states he has a Gjallarhorn (I know Shin Malphur has The Last Word, but Gjallarhorn is still a very old and powerful weapon)
- He boasts about his power and his strength
- The triumph title for Gambit is 'Dredgen'
- He is super enthusiastic in regards to our light, something that the man who killed his master lacked, and the man he killed
- He calls himself "The Drifter", which is ironic, given that Shin Malphur went in search of the Shadows of Yor throughout the galaxy, who were known to have been at The Reef
You never know, just an idea.
I HAVE NOT read up on any lore so this is just what I personally think, please let me know if there is anything that could possibly disprove my theory.

In the mission "ace in the hole" cayde 6 leaves a message for the drifter. Here are a few of the things he Cayde says to him -"You did warn me running with you would put a target on my back." This implies that the drifter is not liked by many and is quite possibly a criminal and a target of the city. Explains why he is in a more hidden area of the tower. Dredgen Yor does have a very infamous dark history so it would make sense. -"MY idea by the way (referring to gambit) had it like a Million years ago, back when you were still handsome." This seems to allude to the drifter appearing to be in a much better state in the past than he is now. This could be easily linked to dredgen Yors (and his beautiful weapon the rose) transformation by the darkness into a more different and evil person. -"getting that up and running means coming out of hiding and giving 'you know who' another shot at you. Hope i was around to see THAT showdown. Personally, my money was on the guy with the golden gun." So based on this information, this is very obvious proof that the drifter has a major rival and the 2 most likely culprits are dredgen Yor and Shin Malphur. What leads me to believe that the drifter is Yor is that Cayde says "my money was on the guy with the golden gun," which makes it sound like it wasn't the drifter, but his opponent who has the golden gun. This would mean that his opponent was shin Malphur making the drifter Dredgen Yor. Also the exotic weapon he has bearing the extremely close resemblance to thorn, the drifters apparent obsetion with the darkness and guardian combat (which is was Yor was known for), his want for you, the player, to kill, and the title "dredgen" you get from the gambit triumphs, all lead me to believe that the drifter is Dredgen Yor. Sorry for the wall of text, there was a lot to talk about lol

4 RepliesIf you have done the Cayde Ace of Spades quest, you find out something.
The Drifter is hiding from someone. Someone who had a 1 on 1 standoff with a golden gun user and won. If I remember right, Cayde says the Golden Gun lost, which would mean Shin Malphur is dead. If I'm remembering incorrectly though, this means that Shin is hunting down the Shadows of Yor and The Drifter is hiding from Shin.
Thought Shiro was exo,

No, if you read the gambit lore it is from the perspective of a "renegade" who alongside investigating the drifter is dealing with the shadows of Yor, who have apparently gone rogue. I'm 99% sure this renegade is the renegade hunter Shin Malphur.

4 RepliesActually no, he’s part of the shadows of Yor. At least I think he is. The gambit triumph title grants the title “Dredgon”.
