IMPORTANT: The purpose of this guide is to help you get better and faster at Gruntpocalypse, not to teach you to headshot a grunt. Read the FULL POST or don't Bother commenting.
So as everyone knows, Gruntpocalypse is a great way to get fast credits in Halo: Reach. Most people discovered this method through friends and by googling. Many people are doing it, but most are doing it wrong. I made this thread to help people get the credits even faster.
I realize that farming is frowned upon, but people looking to get cool armor without playing days on end might want to know how to "boost" their credits. I am going to break down the main points.
Getting to Gruntpocalypse:
To get to Gruntpocalypse, select "Matchmaking", then "Cooperative", and finally select "Score Attack". You can only do this by yourself. When the voting round comes up, look for a gametype called "Gruntpocalypse". Make sure the map is one that you can get through quickly, where you know the spawn points, good vantage points, etc.
Choosing a Map:
There are only 3 maps that I prefer to use. I've tested all of them many times, and have found Corvette, Courtyard, and Beachhead to be the fastest by far. The main mistake people make is taking too long to choose a map, because of the rumor that Corvette is the only map fast enough. This is totally false, as my fastest times are on Courtyard and Beachhead. The difference between Corvette and the rest is that there is a more obvious strategy (to camp on the platforms). Remember, if you take a whole minute to finally get Corvette to come up on the vote, then you've just wasted a minute.
Basic Strategies:
1. When you start any map, the first thing you need to do is run straight for the ammo racks. You start with 30 rounds, and when you stock up, you get another 30, (60 total :P). It's very important to stock up BEFORE the announcer says "reinforcements", otherwise the grunts will run away from the spawns and finding them will take longer.
2. Once you learn where each grunt group spawns, you can develop a strategy that puts you in a good vantage point. Try to keep your distance from the grunts, because when they get closer to you, they begin shooting you, which makes it harder to aim. Also, dying is VERY bad for wasting time.
3. Use the DMR. It may be tempting to switch to your pistol, especially when your running low on ammo, but the truth is, it's just too slow. I only use the pistol when I'm out of ammo for the DMR,or am about to die and DMR needs to be reloaded.
4. This is the most important point. start by killing all the grunts on their spawns on ONE side of the map. Don't put yourself in the middle of the map where grunts can attack from a full 360 degrees. The most simple example of this strategy is Courtyard. You should start on one side, kill the grunts, then look down the long side of the map and shoot under the bridge. I call this strategy "sweeping". Simply put, you should do a sweeping motion in terms of where your killing grunts. This limits where they can shoot your from, makes it easier to track where you have yet to kill grunts, and finally, reduces the "hide and seek" aspect of killing the last few grunts each round.
5. Going back to ammo, once you start noticing the grunts are almost all gone, go grab some ammo. Go back, clean up the last few, and get ready to kill the newly spawning grunts.
6. Armor abilities. There is only ONE that is viable, and that is sprint. No, jetpack wont give you better shooting angles, no, armor lock won't keep you alive. Use sprint to get around the map faster, to run away when you're dying, and use it to do ammo runs quicker. Many people are commenting that armor lock and drop shield are better than sprint. THEY ARE NOT. If you are playing it right, you shouldn't be letting the grunts get within shooting range. Sprint is better because you can get to the power points on the map easier, get to ammo quicker, and basically, make you get the game done faster. When you are good at the game type, you don't die. The most I ever die is once in a blue moon, from a random sticky or fuel rod shot. ONCE AGAIN Armor lock and drop shield will just make the grunts throw continuous stickies at you, and when the ability runs out, you are surrounded by grunts who are in nading/shooting distance. THANK YOU COME AGAIN.
7. Enemies are pretty simple, but some will kill you if you're not careful. The best example of this are the Fuel Rod cannon grunts. they are easy to spot out, and will only shoot you medium range, but they are very accurate and shoot rapid fire. If you see one in a pack of other grunts, try to take it out first. Another enemy that may confuse some is the white grunt. These grunt have cute little helmets that protect against one headshot. Once you knock the helmet off, they are vulnerable to the quick 1 shot kill. All grunts carry something that is perhaps the number one cause of my deaths. They are stickies. grunts will calculate the vectors needed to hit a certain moving target. Basically if they see you running across one's vision, they will figure out how to lead their grenade, and stick you. The same applies for the Fuel Rod cannons. The best way to not get hit by a sticky or a fuel rod blast is to jump and to make quick strafes.
Also, be careful of "chain reaction explosions", caused when a grenade on the ground is detonated by nearby explosions. For this reason, I tend to avoid grunt body piles.
8. Aiming is really important, because a good shot conserves ammo and results in a quicker kill. When you see a group of grunts, take out the most threatening first, but also try to kill the grunts closest to you or closest to getting away near cover. When grunts get away, you lose track of them and they can sneak up on you later. So, when you see a grunt hiding behind something, a quick grenade can kill them or cause them to leap out into the open.
Well, that pretty much sums it up! I am aware a lot of people know some of theses points, but the purpose of this guide is to help those trying to get credits faster, not to show how great I am at Gruntpocalypse (Like really its firefight, who cares)
To see all of these strats in use, as an example, you can visit my File Share and download the files on there. They are very fast times and can help you learn some things, as words only go so far.
Thanks again for reading!
Posted by: PrinceOfThralls Well OP, actually armor lock saved me a lot on corvette. And you never need sprint on Corvette. 1:0 for the prince.
If you don't think that you need sprint then clearly you're dying too much to run out of ammo in the first place. Armour lock is useless, the grunts shouldn't even get near you. If you actually have trouble staying alive on the easiest level then you shouldn't even attempt giving advice.
-
You forgot to mention that crouching increases accuracy making multi-kills easier which will end up in giving moar credits. On beachhead I actually take jetpack, get my ammo and jetpack to the glass overhang near the ammo crate in the middle path. This way they can't hit me well, I am close to ammo at all times, headshots are easier because I can see the entire map, and its easy to see where they spawn from there. I have gone through it several times without dying. I get all the medals.
-
I only play GPoc on Courtyard, i don't really care to learn the new maps with their spawns but i do get the saving time aspect of it. I switch between Jetpack and Sprint, use the jetpack more often though because it actually does help when the fuel rod grunts start runnin around. There is no need for dropshield or armor lock in GPoc especially after you know the spawns and are able to kill the grunts quickly. As the OP said if they are consistently getting close enough to start ripping your health down then you aren't killing as quickly as you should be.

Ill stick with corvette, i can do a corvette run in less then 5 minutes. EDIT: sprint is most useful i found, unless your letting grunts anywhere near you.. but that sometimes happens, which is why i prefer corvette, the vantage point i shoot from is perfect cover from all sides if they were to ever get that close..
Posted by: EdS Chips Sprint is the only viable option? Armor Lock is much more useful since you can avoid death by fuel rods, plasma launchers and plasma grenades. Your statement is sound, but I feel drop shield is a little more potent.
Most of the time the nades are at you before you even can drop the shield, and when you drop it and the nades are at you, its useless. As goes for me there are usually flying 2 nades from a grunt at me, I do a quick armor lock and then back off as long there are no more nades flying at me. When the grunt throws, its usually too late for the drop shield, but not for a quick armor lock. (Just my experience)
Posted by: Crusader0102 Can you tell me your spots on courtyard and beachhead? I normally play corvette because I haven't found a good spot on other maps yet.
Beachhead can be done right on the main platform directly in front of spawn fairly easily. It can see four spawns clearly and dropshield is extremely good for it. Just remember, in the later bits, grunts tend to spawn BEHIND your spawn and walk through it to flank. So just stay on your toes and you are perfectly safe.
Posted by: Joshua Logie
Posted by: I ColdEmbrace I Drop Shield is the only viable armor ability for Score Attack.
Please explain why.
Why Dropshield is superior: - Regens health without health pack use - Deflects grenade spam - Instant cover - Survives six fuel rod shots, more then enough time to locate the bugger behind the explosions and pop him - Grunts, for the most part, avoid entering the shield. If you bite off more then you can chew, popping it and running off will make the grunts have to go another direction to get to you. In a few select situations, this is valuable time. - On beachhead, a single dropshield can be thrown down to give you temporary invincibility from the grunts that rush up the main steps as they have to pass through the shield's surface twice to be able to attack you. Sometimes they even stick themselves off the shield. This and the fact an ammo crate is so easy to reach makes it amazingly quick and painless to ammo up any time you feel the need.

Good guide but kind of obvious. I'm not sure if you should of even made it, but still good job.

Gruntocolypse is so awesome. Thanks for the help.
