A Catholic Priest's thoughts on the Pennslyvania sex abuse scandal.

It doesn't need saying that this scandal is downright evil. As a (imperfect) Catholic, it disgusts me to see the corruption in something I really care about. Father Mike is one of my favorite priests to listen to and he shares a great, insightful, and poignant perspective on the issue. I'll just share my thoughts on some of the points he makes in this video. Virtue signaling- This is something I've been noticing for so long. It is so easy to get on social media and condemn something as evil, without personal cost to yourself. True virtue are those who actually stand up to evil. (The victims who spoke out, those who supported them, those in the jury(s).) Priests are upset- A lot of people assume priests aren't upset at this as they are. This is ridiculous, of course they're upset. Most priests join the church because they honestly believe they have a calling to serve. In a way, they are in love with the sacraments, the Lord, the work that the church does. Of course they are disgusted when they hear that there has been corruption on this scale in the institute they devote their entire lives to. Like Father Mike said, there is no way to possibly convey their anger at those responsible for these cover-ups.

      • The sad reality is that no institution is better than the fallible human beings that comprise it. ...and anytime an institution grows more concerned with itself, its reputation, its power and its privileges.....tragedies like this can happen...and it loses its way. Its interesting you bring this up, because I was reading article about the ACLU a couple of days ago that was relevant to this. It was talking about this internal battle going on within the ACLU because the organization took on some controversial cases to protect free-speech issues for the NRA....and for the alt-right group to get a permit to protest in Charlottesville last year. It was clear that many of these individuals who were upset about this DIDN"T understand what the ACLUs true mission is...and were at-risk for causing it to lose its way. It seems some of them have this notion that the ACLU is a progressive organization...and its goal is to promote social justice and progressive goals....AND THAT IS NOT WHAT THE ACLU IS ABOUT. The ACLU is a CIVIL LIBERTARTIAN organization...and its mission is to protect the BILL OF RIGHTS...from those who would trample upon it out of misplaced conviction, bias or political convenience. And if you are dedicated to Liberty...that means supporting the rights of not only people and causes that you disagree with....it means doing it for some that would have you blow an aneurysm and stroke out on the spot. Which is why when I was a kid, the ACLU defended the rights of the American -godwinslaw!- Party to demonstrate in Illinois...and many other socially and political dubious clients. Because if we are not ALL free...than none of us are free. ...and if we're not careful...any organization (no matter how well intentioned) can lose its compass and lose its way.

        • >16 minute long video. Didn't know it took that long to condemn everyone involved. There's no nuance here.

              • I get what he's saying but.....come on, the catholic church has known about this problem for decades and all they did was try and hide it, protected the abusers and in some cases paid them very, very well to keep silent about the higher ups knowing about it. Back in the '80s and on the catholic church's response was to just move the child rapist to another church and community no one knew them and let it happen again and again and again. And from what I read it seems pretty much the same. The Vatican knew what was happening and didn't do anything about it. At least according to the PA Attorney General.
