Why do people like Garrus so much in the Mass effect universe

I don't really like Garrus, he was never my companion of choice. In ME1 it was always Tali and Wrex. In ME2 it was Miranda and Grunt/Mordin/Legion. In ME3 I honestly can't remember, but it wasn't Garrus.
