Can someone explain to me why people think Hunters are OP in PvP please?

I'm a Nighstalker Hunter main and I severely disagree. None of my grenades are 1-hit-kills, it takes 3 punches to kill anyone else (vs. their 1 or 2), it takes 2 golden gun shots to kill a Titan or Warlock who is supering (vs. hammer and swords 1-hit-kill supers), and my resiliency and recovery are both so low it's a joke. I don't think anything is OP about a hunter in PvP and I think it's a really poor assessment to say otherwise. Edit: it takes 3 punches to kill anyone else (vs. their 1 or 2 **when the Titans or Warlocks are using certain exotics**) Edit 2: After some points made by people in the comments I should clarify some things. 1) I do not play competitive, only Quickplay, Iron Banner, and Mayhem. I've played about 4 matches in Trials. Therefore, my opinion is based upon my experience outside of competitive. 2) I agree that the Arcstrider subclass is exceptionally good. I do not think that it itself makes the Hunter class overall OP though. Please remember, my opinion is limited to mostly Quickplay, but this is also where most people spend their time in the Crucible. Arcstider is not as much of a meta in pubbies as it is in Competitive, and therefore I personally do not consider "But Arcstiders kill things!" a winning argument in the overall context of this debate. A valid point, yes, but it's not good enough. As I said in my response to itsnreekay in the comments below, "One good subclass super does not an entire OP guardian class make." Also, you can thank itsnreekay for at least shifting me a little bit and forcing me to make these edits, but I'm still not convinced (his points had more to do with Competitive than pubbies)

  • Hello! *Walltext and some thoughts incoming* I had this conversation with a friend last week. I main Hunter, he mains Warlock but we play with the other classes as well. His PoV was "These damn OP Hunters with their damn cancer helmet". And I told him that IMO the helmet was not OP. Since day1 it had always bothered me that Hunters don't have any practical team oriented skill (In a team oriented game). So, I held this opinion that the helmet was "just one guy in the team". It doesn't work like the Titan gauntlets that give overshield to near fireteam members or like the Warlock drones or the "empowering hardscope team" rift. "It's just one guy". But then I started to play Competitive. EVERY team had at least 3 arcstriders (bottom tree), wormhusk, antiope, graviton lance and a shotgun. Now I understand why my friend had that opinion, it's super frustrating to play against because of the sinergy that the helmet has with the bottom tree. I loved the helmet! It allowed me to play more aggressive (I hate passive-hardscoping lanes-holding hands) but the meta ruined that feeling. I never understood why the arcstrider was so slow before the update. RPG wise, Hunters are supposed to be fast, slippery, tactical. Before the update, Striker was the fastest super. It didn't make any sense. The tankiest super is also the fastest?. Now every "ground-roaming super" has the same speed. But Warlocks are rocketing all over the place. So yeah, the Helmet is strong af, every Hunter that completed the main story has it (not like the strong exotics for Titans and Warlocks wich are random drops) but as you said, one subclass does not make the entire class OP. TL;DR: Hunter is not OP, one subclass is very strong, even stronger with a helmet that is given by completing the main story. PS: English is not my native language, so pardon any grammar mistakes.

  • My highest k/d is with my warlock, way more survivability imo. Second is Hunter, last is Titan, I just get too punchy and trade too often with my titan. ~TheGreatNike

https://guardian.gg/2/class-stats?platform=console&mode=5&start=2018-08-05&end=2018-08-12 Hunters make up the top 3 subs by KDA, with Arcstrider being on top in EVERY category. They're also the most played class by far. It's not just because they look cool, they currently have the edge in PvP.

        • Because they have a class ability that heals with wormhusk and loads your gun and makes you invis and breaks tracking and makes you reaquire your target. On top of that they have the best jumps for pvp, and their supers are the best for pvp. They are a pvp class.

They're the easiest class to pick up and do well with in PVP. Bungie has said themselves that the Hunter is a great class for beginners. This is why you see a lot of Hunters whining. They presume they're skilled players, but fail to realise the easy-mode class is the only reason they're doing well. When they actually encounter a skilled player, they get destroyed. Being as effective with a Titan or Warlock as you can be with a Hunter, would require considerably more skill. I say this as a Hunter-main.

          • All of my friends main hunters, and I main a Titan. Anything that comes out of their mouths will have something to do with hunters being underpowered, worthless, and needing serious buffs. They then blame the hammer titan

          • I wouldn’t call them OP per say. I play all 3 classes. Have since Yr1 of D1. Titans had a short OP run when they gave birth to SunBreaker w/ TTK but other than that the Hunter Class has always been the Most popular and easiest class to use. Warlocks w/ the Ram could also tank a Precision Sniper Shot for a while too but the Floof has always turned off a lot of players. Hunters as a whole just have a faster learning curve than the other classes. It’s not something that some players like to admit but the Hunter Class is and has always been EasyMode.

              • I see your argument about a subclass not making the entire class OP, but let's be honest how often do you see hunters that aren't archstriders? That being said, theres no reason why a archstrider coming after me in super should survive a titan smash. I dont know how it happens, but it does.. constantly. I suppose it's not so much the hunter being OP, but the fact that the current meta, GL VW etc, coupled with a hunter wearing wormhusk becomes extremely frustrating.

                • It's mostly just Arcstrider. That said, having access to dodge is a fairly substantial advantage. It's pretty meh in PvE, but in PvP, it's good enough to throw off enemy aim, and you have much greater access to it than Warlocks do Rift or Titans do Barricade. Stack on Wormhusk, and things start getting a bit ridiculous because you practically get a personal mini-Rift on Dodge, and you get it much more frequently. Arcstriders also get a lot of ability and health regen perks, which naturally makes them overall quite strong, and some pretty solid grenades. Add in that they probably have the best PvP super (maybe tied with Hammers), and you've got yourself a recipe for a subclass that's a bit too strong. Nightstalkers and Gunslingers are, in my experience, not nearly as oppressive, most likely because they don't have nearly the same degree of regen and cooldown cutting. They're strong, but not unreasonably so

My man, step into competitive and feast your eyes upon arcstrider hunters with the worm husk crown. It has been the meta for quite some time now. And, yes, like someone previously mentioned before the arcstrider was meta night stalkers were in charge. I loved the dawn blade as much as I could after the go fast update. But my kd only got significantly better after I played Arcstrider. Truevanguard - destiny 2 content creator has a chart at around 5 minutes into the video expressing the superiority of the Arcstrider subclass.

                    • Point 2 from edit 2 is bs. Arcstriders are probably the most popular subclass across the board for hunters both in pvp and pve. They have the widest ranges of exotics for both pve and pvp to use, as compared to the other classes which have only about one or two that effectively improve the performance of your super or subclass. All hunter subclasses are very good for pvp so long as you’re not an idiot with your positioning or activation timing for your super.

                          • When I hear people say "Hunter is OP" I generally just take it as shorthand for "Arcstrider is OP," which it is. They have the best jump, a decent grenade (Arcbolt,) a good melee (Disorienting Blow,) and a great roaming super. And on top of all that they have Wormhusk, which is probably one of if not the best pieces of Exotic armour for PvP in the game right now. They also have the best stat allocation, as you can spec easily into high mobility and resilience without using too many armour mod slots. You'll have low recovery, but Wormhusk makes your Recovery stat irrelevant anyway, so who cares?

                          • When people say hunter they mean arcstrider. When people say it’s op they mean they’ve never played sentinel.

I think it's because more people play as Hunters as there main. Because I see too many players play as Hunter. Reason1: Because it's the most easiest character to pick up in my opinion. Reason 2:Hunters are more of a fast and stealth character so harder to kill in PvP.
