When I first read the Books of Sorrow, I made a lot of assumptions that a lot of people didn't necessarily agree with. I immediately connected Worm Gods with Ahamkara, for instance. One of these other assumptions I made, honestly, had zero proof. It was an assumption I made purely because of bias.
I assumed that, upon killing Akka and mantling the title of Taken King, Oryx became more powerful than his gods. I believed this for no other reason than my love for Oryx as a character, but I guess it turns out I was right?
So, I hadn't read any of the "Web Lore" that got released awhile back before Warmind. I think it was around 3 and a half months ago, and I was still pissed at Bungie with the lore in CoO. Because of that, I flat out refused to read any new lore. Well, recently, I went back and finally read it. And boy, does it have some interesting bits! The most interesting parts come from the Nokris section and this is where the root of this post lies.
In the beginning, there were five.
Yul, the Honest Worm. Akka, the Worm of Secrets. Eir, the Keeper of Order. Ur, the Ever-Hunger. Xol, Will of the Thousands. And they were Virtuous.
Right off the bat, we get some interesting tidbits. These titles for the other worms allude to some pretty neat concepts. The worms Eir and Ur need some love. We know so little about them.
In time, Auryx learned Akka’s secret. That he was stronger than the gods. That they had given their power, and in giving, it was diminished. Auryx rose up and slew Akka. He took, and he grew strong with Akka’s power.
So, here we get objective confirmation that Oryx became more powerful than the Worm Gods. Or rather, Oryx became more and more powerful while the Worms Gods became weaker, as the act of giving diminished them. This might not be a surprise to some and I'm assuming most already know this and consider this old news, but this is pretty cool info.
I don't know why exactly I felt the need to make a post and I'm kind of reconsidering posting this, as I have nothing to really add to this conversation. But I've already written it up anyways, so I guess I might as well add it to the forums.
In conclusion: Oryx is even cooler and I'm glad I finally read that Web Lore.

The power of the hive and the worm gods comes from two sides their connection to the deep and their sword logic oryx had more sword logic than akka so he slew him to commune with the deep. Which means the worm gods can always speak to the deep which is where the power of the hive comes from. Oryx’s power and strength in battle is all about his right to live.

55 RepliesIt's entirely possibly that Akka allowed Oryx to kill him, making the killing power he gained diminished, same as how it was for his Sisters.

that means orxy is a possible universe buster.

13 RepliesI had always assumed this, but I don’t think people had a problem with Oryx being more powerful than a Worm God, but rather us being more powerful than one. However, if we truly followed the sword logic, we would actually be the top dog in the universe. We’ve slain Atheon, Crota, Skolas, Oryx, Aksis, and Ghaul. We’ve done so much and killed so many. We would ironically be the best participant for the sword logic. As for Xol, he hasn’t had a good meal in centuries. Before Oryx slew Akka, I had always assumed Xol was the worm of dark wisdom, not of pure strength. That meant he was the weakest in general. And by having an apprentice in the form of Nokris, he was also giving again. And being buried in ice for centuries possibly starved him. After we killed him, he fed joyously. Then the Taken found him, started feeding him, blah blah blah, we collect Whisper of the Worm, and now we feed Xol because he’s realized we’re the top dogs now. If you think about it for more than just 3 seconds (like most of the pea brains here), this is actually kinda deep.

1 ReplyI’m pretty sure some of this has been lifted from a My Name is Byf script on the same subject...

3 RepliesI've never seen something so powerful! He knocked over a whole bridge!

13 RepliesEdited by Ghost593835: 8/11/2018 11:20:11 AMXol was weak. even crota was stronger, he was a moon cracker. since we killed the second most poweful character in all of destiny, eveyone else will be a cake walk compared to him.

5 RepliesMan I cannot wait for that Grimoire book this fall. The very things you pointed out will be explored more deeply...and with some crazy art to go with it!

1 ReplyEdited by Reshsafari: 8/11/2018 5:51:36 PMHe is more more powerful. But xol should have had more strikes related to beating him. And nokris should have been more powerful. It would have been a great raid with them both in it

1 ReplyYou need to pay close attention to the names. Auryx slew Akka. Not Aurash, but Auryx. This implies that the worm spawn had already been taken in, and formed a symbiotic bond. So not only was Akka diminished in power by giving away a portion of its own strength, but Auryx had been strengthened by the worm larvae.

47 RepliesYul, Eir and Ur won't be even a challenge. probably will just be campaign bosses in destiny three and the raid will have just the deep.

7 RepliesEdited by SnakePayne86: 8/11/2018 2:51:10 PMI have my doubts that the way Xol was portrayed in the Warmind was what the writer of The Books of Sorrow had in mind. From my understanding they have a totally different writing team now. Could be wrong though. It would have been way better if the worms were microscopic and infected us from the inside out of our brains, bursting thru our chests and guts and killing us when they’ve consumed enough from the inside. I agree though, the books of Sorrow is one of he bigggest reasons I’ve stuck with this game. It’s a great story and that’s one of the reasons people were getting pissed when the new writers were being inconsistent with the original story.

1 ReplySo that must mean that our ghost has suffered memory lost during the expansions.....?

1 ReplyNone of these villains sound as interesting as the final god of pain.

1 ReplyI... thought this was already known.

1 ReplySpongebob and Patrick are gonna mad you killed wormy

5 RepliesJust an FYI, one of the Whisper of the Worm ornaments, Between Breaths, is Ahamkara bone and it has that mystical glow Awoken have on their skin.

I slew multiple gods that have killed even stronger gods then xol

13 RepliesI still want some power scaling. It would be nice to know what kind of fire power these gods have. Can they create star systems or dismantle stars? Can they move around planets using star roads or create universes in thought? Some story love would be great!
-
7 RepliesIt should be remembered that the books of sorrow were written by oryx himself and as savathun says in that interruption, oryx may be an unreliable narrator.
-
7 RepliesNot surprised seeing that I needed a whole fire team of 6 to kill oryx
I needed a fire stick to kill xol
4 RepliesMy daughters middle name is Auryx.

4 RepliesWe didnt really kill Xol.. you have to remember that those considered hive gods can only be killed in the ascended realm. Im assuming Xol has a throne world. Though... he was a huge disappointment, along with Nokris.. The lore described the Ahmakara as dragons.. and yet Xol looked like a demonic joke of a giant tape worm... very basic character design.

6 Repliesand yet, 6 guardians were able to defeat oryx, but all of the guardians can't repel a cabal invasion...for the sake of gameplay... gotta love this new way of story telling.
