The one common trait we can see about the cavalcade of freak shows that are our Guardians is that we can only play as adult characters, but what about in-universe? Do Ghosts have some moral standard programmed into them to avoid the remains of dead adolescents so they don't burden children with defending the Traveler? Or are there actual Kinderguardians running around out in the wilds somewhere? I don't think it's far fetched that a child could possess a strong Light within them, and that's the only real requirement to be a Guardian we know of for sure.
If a younger individual was brought back, would they grow to maturity naturally or would the Light's anti-aging affect halt or slow their development? Would the Light provide them with adequate combat instincts or would they have to learn by trial and error? Or for that matter, would the Light provide a more mature mindset that seems to be common with most Guardians (relative to children). Like if there was a Guardian who was 12 years in age, would they have the maturity of an adult? This more or less melts into the question of whether or not Guardians are brought back with their own instincts and talents or if the Light provides them with a sort of "Base Line" skill set/experience/maturity.
If there is an age requirement, what is it? Is it post puberty or could it be prior? How young is the youngest Guardian? Perhaps the Ghost can synthesize a more mature form for their Guardian to take on initial resurrection, letting someone who died in their early teens to be reforged into their adult body. In this case, both the corpse of a young and old individual would have the same starting point, experience wise, if they were resurrected as adult Guardians, and would likely develop their skills equal to each other, so there wouldn't be a reason to avoid the remains of adolescents.
I'd love to hear thoughts on the subject.

Guardians can have various roles, I suppose the role can vary with age. ~TheGreatNike

Typically you want your soldier of light to be fit for battle. So I'd say prime years. Though I'm not sure if there is an exact cutoff point for age, since Osiris and Saladin appear to be pretty old.

3 Repliescurrent lore (such that it is) seems to indicate humans can be born post-collapse with the capacity to bear the Traveler's light. Shinobu and Shin Malphur are the two we know of that were born normal humans and later became guardians. In Shinobu's case, we know that she was running around with some guardians when one of the ghosts told her she carried Light, but it wasn't until after Shinobu was killed in combat that a ghost resurrected her as a Guardian. We don't know anything about Shin Malphur's transition from human to Guardian. So, I'd say it's possible for there to be child guardians, but I find it unlikely. Mainly because logistics. We're basically zombies. There's nothing to say that if a child were brought back as a guardian, that they would continue to grow into adulthood physically. They might (probably) forever remain a child.

9 RepliesNope. Sorry. The only child soldiers are the ones in Africa.

Edited by crispychris56: 8/10/2018 1:17:22 AMI don't think there is one that can be easily defined. All I know is that ghosts pick people that are already dead, so it varies

2 RepliesI seem to find a lot of 9 year olds in a 16+ guys/girls body...

20 RepliesEdited by TotalDramaGamer: 8/8/2018 1:32:05 AMAn age 'requirement'? As in, could the Traveler 'not' choose someone from a certain age? Probably not. Realistically, the Traveler probably had the power to choose anybody. But the Traveler needed warriors, weapons, fighters. And you had like... untold millions of people to choose from, and most seemingly had a past before being a guardian in the first place. So, even if the Traveler 'could' choose a child, why would it? Just like why it's unlikely to have chosen an old and feeble man, it needed the strongest. It just wouldn't have happened from a logical sense. Also... say that a child warrior WAS resurrected... what makes you think it would still be in a child's body? The guardians are literally reformed, but are also clearly inhuman in terms of ability and structure. To say that we're 'exactly' as before the first time we died is equally as unlikely. Heck, who knows? Maybe these aren't our bodies at all, but rather, merely the resting places of the souls needed for reconstruction. Also unlikely, but more likely than being made as a child...

2 RepliesGuardians are resurrected warriors. That means that before the we’re guardians, people had to go into battle. And the average age of being first able to enlist around is the world is 18-21.

3 RepliesEdited by IronGemini: 8/9/2018 2:17:03 AMTechnically, the traveler could resurrect anyone it wanted to wield the light, but that would be a dumb choice.

2 RepliesEdited by CheshireGrin92: 8/8/2018 9:18:19 PMI don’t think there is one set age in terms of the game. To me the Traveler has our long dead bodies restored to when they had been in the best possible shape which is probably why the vast majority look to be in their late teens to early 20’s. Exceptions like Osiris who looks quite a bit older could be that his real power lies in his mind not his physical power a sort of with age comes wisdom type deal. The only other notable exception may be Shin Maphur who was BORN with the connection to the light and born after the collapse. With Shin it seems Jaren Ward could ‘sense’ the light within him and other guardians can sense it within another as well (after all the vanguard just had to look at us to see it in the red war.). But it doesn’t seem Shin became a guardian until his teens or early adulthood.

I think that what it really comes down to is why a Guardian is selected: by their skills and experience, or by what's in their heart. Skills and experience would almost guarantee that Guardians are all adult. What's in their heart could mean anyone would be recruited.

4 RepliesWasn’t there something about Guardians being resurrected warriors? Like, we were soldiers in the past. If that’s true, it would explain a part of our affinity for guns and combat. The traveller also probably programmed some skills into us, but still. My point is, if we all were soldiers in our past, that would make us at least old enough to go to war. So no children...in civilized countries at least. But I don’t have a source, only speckles upon my memory, which could be bs.

Under 10. Their -blam!-ing guardians! Titan smash straight out the womb 👊

2 RepliesIf Destiny´s Guardians function even remotely like contemporary armed forces I would say that the minimum age requirement would work like this: 18+ minimum age 21+ recommended age Must still be in your physical, psychological and mental prime. Nevertheless, the lore implies that Guardians are more akin to a knight-errant. And that they cannot be truly managed like a standing military. As such, we can´t really tell what the age requirements are for being a Guardian. For example, Lord Saladin is implied to be a very elderly Guardian yet he is still considered to be among the greatest and migthtiest Guardians to have ever lived. Hell, is there someone who knows what makes a Guardian a Guardian? Like, in how the Light chooses them? The difficulty in answering this seemingly easy and straightforward question; opens the possibility for underage Guardians to exist. That would require truly dire circumstances, though. The kind of circumstances that would give disturbing Shingeki no Kyojin-like vibes. The Destiny franchise has never been this dark. As such, I doubt we will ever see underage Guardians.

It kind of makes sense you would want people in peak physical condition as soldiers. Part of that means being fully grown (so young adult @ mininum) but young enough to not be feeling the effects of old age. That being said...exos are not in their original bodies and could have been young when they got their exo form. From a game building aspect though, I could see why they wouldn't want some characters to be significantly smaller then others. Anyone old enough to have played goldeneye 64 will know what I'm talking about (nobody likes playing against an oddjob)
