I haven't read any of the Halo books except Contact Harvest so help me out here.
Why would Halsey give Cortana to the Autumn to escape Reach if they didn5 know where they were going?
Did Cortana know because of here forerunner knowledge what the coordinates were?
What was the autumns objective if they didn't find Halo?
Just to eventually find there way back to earth?
-
What I got from the campaign was yes the jump was intentional by Halsey. She knew what was there and wanted to use it as an attempt to thwart the Covenant from the inside. But Cortana and the rest of the crew didn't have any idea. The "Cortana" you deliver to the Pillar of Autumn is only the small piece of Cortana that contained the coordinates to Halo and Forerunner information so she could download the index and access Forerunner systems. That's what I got from it. Feel free to pick it apart.

The original plan was for the PoA to be boarded with the best of all roles, and send it to kill the prophets. When Reach was invaded the plan had to be aborted. half of cortana was already on board, so you have to deliver the other half, just because. cortana knew from the forrunner knowledge and another incident (one half knew where it was, the other knew what it did). She co-ordinated the 'random' jump- onky she knew where they were really going.
Posted by: Timmie It was a blind jump, their mission was the lead the covenant on a wild goose chase. The covenant would assume a ship to run back home, thus the PoA jumping randomly, the covenant would pursue and expect to find earth near by. Giving Earth a little more time to prepare for the inevitable.
Actually, it was semi-blind. She had no idea WHAT would be there, just that is was Forerunner.

Well first of all, Bungie modified the story a little. Originally, all of the Spartan-IIs, save a few, were gathered on the PoA to travel deep into Covie space in order to capture a prophet. They were actually already on their way when 300+ Covie ships slipped in system. PoA turned around and hauled ass back to the battle, where Red and Blue teams were deployed. Cortana was already with PoA at this point. Once John was back on board, Cortana used, and correct me if I am wrong, coordinates from a Forerunner artifact to make a jump to a potentially valuable site, which turned out to be Halo.

It was discovered to be star coordinates. She matched them up with a location and had the PoA jump there.
That correct apart from i thought she got it out of the covies Network system?
I believe that weird artifact the Chief and his team found in that museum was where it came from. May have mixed it up.

Anywhere is better than nowhere when you're being shot at :P

I think it is a little bit yes and no. I remember reading somewhere that it was supposed to be a blind jump, but Cortana had the coordinates already in her system from the rock Master Chief returned with. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Installation_04
Following the UNSC's disastrous defeat at Reach and the loss of a third of her tech staff, the UNSC Pillar of Autumn made an apparently blind jump through Slipspace from where they would then make their way to Earth. In reality it was planned by the AI Cortana, using coordinates found in an artifact found on Sigma Octanus IV.
I've always thought they gave Cortana to the POA to prevent her capture. I don't think she had time to set a destination, they just need to get the hell of that planet before they assploded! If the Covenant capture Cortana they learn everything. The human defence networks, plans, procedures, and most importantly; Earth. She was the most valuable thing on Reach.

Thx every1 for the info
Posted by: Thezezeal I got the impression from Reach that she knew EXACTLY where she was going and what was there-- the Blind Jump thing and the whole "I don't know what that is" was just subderjuge, from what I gather. Although, that is just from half-heard Campaign stuff, so might be a little off.
I got that same impression. Cortana knew where halo was from the info gathered from the forerunner structure. They jumped to it purposefully in the hopes of finding a way to defeat the covenant, which they did in a way, by destroying it. Canonically, I don't know why they acted like they made a random jump in Halo CE, but it was most likely because when they made it, they had no idea they were going to do Halo Reach's story.

As others said Cole protocol normally would dictate that a blind jump is required and Keyes thought that they made a blind jump but Cortana got the coordinates from Forerunner data and didn't tell anyone she was following them.

the co-ordanates for installation 04 were found on reach just before the attack, i think
-
(Activate Halo Geek Mode) The Cole Protocol dictates that all ships must take 3 consecutive blind jumps before returning to an inhabited planet, so the Covenant can't follow them. But after Halo: Reach, I wonder if the slipspace co-ordinates were somewhere within the Forerunner Data inside Cortana.... Hmmm (Deactivate Halo Geek Mode)
-
Cortana took the coordninates from the forunners. But they didn't actually know anything about that area. They just knew that it was far away from earth, that's why they took it.
-
In the books we find out that Cortana purposely put in the coordinates for Halo. Se didn't know it was Halo, just that it was a coordinate in the forerunner artifact. Reach kinda destroyed the books cannon though, so... I dunno.
-
I think they meant "Blind Jump" as in Cortana had coordinants, but didn't know where they lead. All she knew was that it was important. [Edited on 09.22.2010 11:04 AM PDT]

yeah remember when halsey was talking to the nobles before she gave 6 the ai she said she found a weapon that could win the war and cortana was the key so i feel she knew exactly where it was but then they didnt anticipate the flood lol
-
Not exactly. Cortana analyzed and decrypted the forerunner glyphs on the artifact found on reach. It was discovered to be star coordinates. She matched them up with a location and had the PoA jump there.

But, according to The Fall of Reach, Cortana is able to decode some ancient Forerunner Celestial Map and decipher some coordinates that they deemed to be very important. So, she changes the Pillar of Autumn's trajectory from 'random' to the coordinates outlined in the Forerunner Artifact. These coordinates led the Autumn to Halo.

They couldn't go right back to earth because the covies could follow them and find earth. I think she just randomly picked coordinates that she had in her data base but did not know that Halo would be there.
