Let's talk about Guardian Con

I'm not sure where to begin as I really wanted to have a fantastic time and the money raised for charity is unbelievably impressive. But my wife and I went to Guardian Con today in Tampa and it was...less than impressive. I understand that this con is still in its infancy and is trying to figure itself out but here's some of my observations. With that said, the line to experience Gambit was so long that we were not able to give it a go. In fact, they closed the lines off several times because it was so long. Cosmo was there and looked to be having a great time while socializing. But the lack of Bungie panels or anything else Destiny related was disappointing. The Bungie store was not really selling anything. If you wanted to buy something, you ordered it on tablets through the regular online Bungie store. Nothing special about the shirts. No Guardian Con logo. Nothing. The lack of a physical or digital program was a bit disappointing as well. I know the schedule was on the GC website but a program with a map would have been helpful. No swag. Not even a goodie bag with advertising materials. Nothing. Not a coupon for Scuf or any of the companies present. No Destiny or GC koozie. Nada. Now lets move on to Gambit. Bungie was very organized and professional. The PC setups were fantastic looking and the game itself was running magnificently. From what I could see outside the barrier. But there we just not enough banks of PC's available. There should have been three times the amout of stations. Gambit was obviously the big draw and it was a huge letdown to miss out. I really hope Bungie continues supporting Guardian Con and I also hope the staff running GC steps up their convention game. Anyone else have an experience, good or bad, from Guardian Con?

  • Please leave a link to the Con you and a couple of your buddies created. As well as, all the luscious swag you offer. Gimme a break. Guardiancon started out as a, "small," get together of a few Destiny 1 streamers. And close to 1000 people showed up to a bar in Tampa. The organizers, then decided to try and do an actual con, with the emphasis, raising money for St. Judes research hospital, a charity that had a special, personal meaning to them. They managed to gather a couple thousand people, and raised almost 2 million dollars for St. Judes. This year they stepped it up a notch and rented the convention center, and had around 10,000 attend. Normal cons cost hundreds of dollars per ticket, GC, was $50 a piece I believe. With all the proceeds, that weren't needed for the convention center/vendor booths, going to St. Judes. It's basically 3 to 5 guys doing the whole thing. They don't have corporate sponsors, or big money to provide all that swag you think you need. It's simply a gathering of gamers from Destiny, Warframe, Fort Nite, and Realm Royal, getting together to help raise money to combat childhood cancer via St. Judes. Nothing more nothing less. This year we, as a community, were able to raise over $2.7 million, the daily cost of providing St. Judes care. Really tired of people talking shit about GuardianCon, when they clearly have no idea the level of grassroots, this event is. Wasn't enough for you? Fine. Don't attend. Just use the money you would have spent, to donate to St. Judes and call it a day.

    • It’s because Bungie doesn’t have a Space Mom. Also wasn’t it community run event, not a Bungie based one?

Same, I went there with a couple friends and we realized that if you wanted to play gambit, you had to stay in the line the entire time, we didnt stay there or did anything to hold a place so the moment we went in line, they closed off. I didn’t like the fact that other games had a bigger presence (realm royale had more space ffs) than the game that the convention is based off

I had a decision to make, either go to GuardianCon or go to FFXIV fanfest later in the year. I decided that if I couldn't get my tickets to fanfest I would go to GuardianCon. Barely got my tickets 4 minutes before they sold out after immediately getting into the queue for it. So happy I had great luck and even snagged a room in the Rio before they sold out of rooms. I really wanted to go to GuardianCon but again like you stated the convention is in its infancy. Meanwhile for me FFXIV was more exciting because they had meet and greet with your world server, have enough PCs and PS4s for everyone to not only login to at the convention but also a personal realm for us to play in. They give players challenges and if we clear them we get famous "I Beat" T-Shirts, they have a VR set up to have us actually play as our characters for 45 minutes. Finally they have thier own band playing some of the best gaming music you ever heard plus a patch notes show for the next patch as well as every other year they announce the next big expansion. So excited to be going.

        • It was another excuse for youtubers to tell bungie to make the game for them so they can make money on videos again.

            • I'm pretty sure guardian con is a fan run event, and so they would have to ask bungie to do panels and that sort of thing. I always assumed it was just a bunch of people palyong destiny in one place. And this year had gambit.

            • Forget attending a Destiny convention in real life. It's embarrassing enough that I still play this shit.

                • The best thing ever would have been charging 4 cents to even stand in the gambit line.

They have half assed a game that has had every chance to succeed and your surprised they half assed real life as they pretend it was the next greatest game ever ? The exact same stance they take on their game ? This should show anyone still pretending bungie has heard you lol. No way do I buy it come September. I'm waiting awhile. To watch the dumpster fire. Unless of course you believe the Phoenix is about to rise from the ashes of D2 of the past year .

                    • To follow up on my original post, a friend of mine whom we met at GC stayed to brave the lines. I received a text from him today stating Bungie never re-opened the line to attendees. What a disappointment.

                      • It's a young con run by folks who probably aren't the most experienced when it comes to running a con. What you and a lot of people experienced were growing pains. They'll subside as the con really begins to find its legs. Most cons don't even make it as far as Guardian Con did, and considering how niche Destiny is, I'm glad to see it doing so well.

Can’t say I’m not surprised to hear this. When bromnigul was interviewed by FOX news it was all about Ninja and Fortnite, Destiny wasn’t mentioned once

                          • Thank you so much for your info! Sorry to hear about your many disappointments. Sounds like a lot of the things you mentioned should have been available to con goers, especially exclusives! Merchandise from the online store off tablets, seriously? Just curious, anyone dressed up (cosplay)?

                              • Regarding GC logos on bungie merch, that would have had to have been a cross licensed product, as Bungie is not anything to GC but a vendor. They were there in the same capacity as Scuff, DxRacer or Warframe. The space they had was a vendor space they had to purchase, same as other vendors. I heard the VIP ticket holders received a swag bag but not general admission.
