I'll go ahead and make this simple for those who don't want to read the book that I have in my head. feel free to disagree with me. this isn't true of all people but it is a pretty good generalization.
Basically guys want someone who will stand by them till the end. someone loyal and will stick with them till they die, without the standard commitment of a spouse, hence why guys tend to have a few really tight friends that they hang out with all the time. Having a dog can also seem similar to having a son for some guys.
Girls want the affection and the challenge to win said cats affection, that they have to offer. but they also tend to like how cats are nowhere as needy as a spouse or boyfriend is and can be dismissed without having to worry about the cats feelings being hurt. Cats can also fill the maternal instinct in women.
Thanks for reading. I may continue with some more arm chair psychology later.
I had this thought in the shower after work last night, and I should have written it then but, oh well.

Edited by Partisan1983: 7/14/2018 11:13:08 AMI love my dogs. One is a male German Shepherd/Lab and the other is a female pure breed Rhodesian Ridgeback They are well behaved and I trust them more than 99% of humans on this god forsaken rock. Cats are nothing but charismatic assholes.

2 RepliesAs a dude, I prefer cats. They dont smell as bad, they don't shit everywhere, they're pretty self sufficient for most part and all i have to do is feed them, give em water and change the kitty litter. They're great.
-
1 ReplyDo you have any psychology training and data to back up your claim that more guys like dogs?
-
Guys like dogs because they're Mans best friend. As for cats well they do share a nickname with a certain lady part.
-
1 ReplyNah not really. I'm a girl and dogs have always been better companions. More trustworthy and friendly. Cats make you their slave and punish you by pissing on stuff and attacking you when you don't please them
-
Off topic: Cats are useless, unless one has a vermin problem. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing.

2 RepliesMy cat acts like a dog.

Interesting... I may or may not think on this later, but thanks on the intriguing read.

8 RepliesI hate both I prefer any reptile.
-
1 ReplyAs a male, I prefer cats. But my current dog kinda looks and acts like a cat.
-
I love both, had both. Right now I got two wonderful cats. Much more self reliant which suits my life right now. Dogs are a hell of a lot more responsibility and to many people just get one without realising this. You can’t leave them alone all day every day, you must take them out every day. Right now my cats are great 🙂😺😺

Girls like cats because girls are tho... Queens.
-
(get ready for RRREEEEEs) Personally I love both, though I rather dogs.
-
Lol what? Both make great pets.
-
Nope. My cat is a big baby that's wants nothing but a tummy rub.

One of the biggest BS books I read was something called "Undatable", by these two women, which gave all these reasons why a guy was unsuitable... having a cat was a big one. Matter of fact, having ANY pet except a medium-sized dog or maybe fish. Except I think they had a problem with fish, too.
-
1 ReplyI seem to prefer cats a bit more though.
-
2 RepliesAnd yet, Wynona had a big brown beaver and she stroked it all the time, until she pricked her finger one day and it occurred to her that she might have a porcupine!
-
3 RepliesI am guy I like cats 🐱 but I also like dogs *awoo*
-
3 RepliesI prefer cats because, like you said, dogs are so damn needy...and gross. They smell, they drool, they have to be taken to that awful 'outside' place... Too much work.
-
2 RepliesTLDR All I know is men prefer catwomen to dogwomen so you’re wrong

2 RepliesLifelong dog lover here. I think the calculation is simpler than that. A cat is a pet. A dog is a partner and a friend. So which you prefer tends to come down to how strongly you want to bond with an animal, and what you want back from that relationship. Cats are independent, barely domesticated in many cases, and don't feel a whole lot of need for social interaction. So if you want a pet that you can leave alone most of the time, let it tend to its own needs, and you interact when the two of you feel like it.... a cat is for you. Food and a clean litter box is pretty much all a cat needs from a human. Dogs OTOH, as pack animals have a very strong need to be a part of a group. That have envolved to associate "belonging" with "safety" and "security"...and they'll suffer if that need isn't met. So a dog that is well-treated will bond VERY strongly to you...and will demand a lot from you both in time, attention and affection....but will give a lot in return. I have two Welsh corgis at home, and they take up a lot of my time and energy....but I give it gladly. Because I have two companions that are unconditionally happy and excited to be a part of my life. Just something as simple as an anticipated car trip is enough to get these two barking and squealing in happy excitement like a couple of little kids. And their boundless enthusiasm is infectious.

14 RepliesHmm, interesting. I'm what you would probably call a "mans man". Im 6'2 230lbs, I hunt, fish, camp, go 4-wheeling, ride motorcycles almost everyday. I can build and maintain every part of a house, I can build/repair every single part of a car/truck/motorcycle, I'm not afraid to take or give a punch (nor talk someone out of a fight). I love beer, though I don't drink much anymore. I don't share my personal (emotional) feelings much. If you saw me in real life, you would never think I'd be on a video game based forum. Now, with that said, I love cats. I could care less about those needy, stupid, messy things called dogs. Go figure.
