What are the taken?

This was something I felt Bungie didn’t really explain. All I got from the extremely short Io storyline was that they are magical creatures that take over the other races In the game. But lore wise, what are they? Why do they take over the other races, and not guardians?

    • You’ve never played D1, have you? Go back and read up about them. The Taken aren’t “magical creatures”. They’re the races we know and love, corrupted by pure Darkness by Oryx, or at least the one who has the power to Take.

    • <The Taken are beings yoinked from this universe by someone who has the power to Take (previously Oryx and now Savathun or Quria). They are sent to the Deepest part of the Ascendant Realm where they meet the Darkness itself, who promises the being everything they want, before forcibly removing their soul from their own body and pitting them against their own allies or other beings without their control. The Darkness possesses the beings, but gives full on control to whoever has the power to Take. The Taken themselves only indirectly Take other beings. The Blight they leave around act as portals to the Ascendant Realm... the deepest parts. Which then the whole process starts all over again. The reason why Guardians have not been Taken has been theorized for a bit. It's come down to two reasons. 1, we're zombies. Personally I'm against this because if we were DEAD without the Light then Ghaul would've killed every Guardian with his first move. 2, because we have the Light. As to why normal humans haven't been Taken... I have no -blam!-ing clue.>

      • Basically the taken were started by Oryx the taken king. He killed Akka the worm of secrets to receive the power to take. He made the tablets of ruin from Akkas body along with the Dreaghtnaught. When Oryx was killed no clue what happens to the tablets but now the hive below him in rank some how got the power to take

This is gonna take a lot of explaining. The “Taken” are a result of Oryx, the former king of the hive killing the strongest Worm God Akka. Oryx was able to siphon whatever power was from Akka’s corpse and was able to do two things. The first thing he did was make the Dreadnaught. A giant moon size death ship that The second was use whatever power was left to abduct individuals and send them to a realm where they were judged by the Darkness. These “wraiths” were then sent back, their wills removed, memories wiped, and given special psionic abilities that can’t be explained. Every single Taken is the opposite of what their Original form was. Example: A vandal used to slip in between things in life, never having anything of his own. Now, that vandal is able to create a protective dome for himself. A Knight no longer needs to hide behind a shield, and a centurion can find their enemies. Oryx has dozens of Taken Races, but after we killed his son, rage blinded the King. Instead of using his full arsenal, he only Took from the races currently in Sol. The fallen, the Cabal, the Vex, and the Hive whom were somewhat responsible for crotas demise. But he wasn’t able to take anyone from Humanity due to the Traveler’s blessing of light. We were essentially immune to being taken, but not to being poisoned by the blight, as evidence by the Lake of Shadows Strike in D2. Eventually, Oryx was defeated and killed by us, leaving the Hive leaderless until Savathûn took it up. For now, the Taken will be now and forever more a scourge in the solar system.

        • Oryx, the Taken King (a Hive god that we killed in Destiny 1) uses powers of the Darkness to control the will of others. I’m pretty sure he got this power by killing the Worm God Akka.
