Warlocks: how do i become a better warlock?

Hunter main here needing assistance on how to warlock properly in pvp? Whats the best set up to run in terms of subclass and exotics? I'm so used to arc strider dodging for closing the distance vs storm caller just hovering towards enemies unless i have ionic blink, dodging around corners for a quick escape, running frost ees for better cooldowns across the board and most of all double jumping. When I switch to my warlock i just feel so sluggish, no dodges, cant jump around to dodge enemies, no compelling exotics...just... Eh

  • Dont use heavy armor, dont jump and glide instead jump for the boost drop and jump again, concentrate on movement and resiliance and fight like a titan.

  • Step 1: Get elected Step 2: Realize the greatness that is the Warlock Master Race Step 3: Create a Warlock only clan that spans across multiple other clans across all consoles Step 4: Blame Hunters for everything wrong in the game Step 5: Initate FinalSolution.exe Step 6: Promise Titans a treaty, which they will believe because they're dumb, and then power up the bass cannon. Step 7: As soon as reinforcments arrive with Forsaken, unleash the bass cannon. Voidwalkers to the West (blitzkrieg teleport into bombing runs), Dawnbreakers to the NorthEast (to combat the cold), and Stormcallers to the South (create hurricanes to fend off foriegn naval assault). Step 8: Create zombies in a spur of the moment decision (expirement with the RoI artifact) Step 9: ??? Step 10: Profit

      • Dawnblade top tree. Icarus dash is amazing. Total clutch save. You can float over opposition & destroy with sidearm, thanks to keep floaty whilst aiming/shooting perk. V satisfying. OP. The roaming super is, well, super. Better than hammers. Ophidian aspects, high mobility + recovery, Neo the bullets. Win.

        • I run The Devour tree as the instant health is quite useful and A Vortex Novabomb is good CC for points. I also run Burst glide and a vortex grenade. I’d recommend you go into PvP and test out all the subclasses and trees and see which one fits your playstyle more. I’m an aggressive player and Voidwalker fits with my playstyle more then the other subclasses.

        • Slap on devour. Shove the grenade down your throat as far as you can. Shoot everything. But tbh I feel your pain. Been a Warlock since D1 beta...we only had 3 ‘good’ exotics. D2 Maybe..like 1.

Voidwalker Devour Blink High recovery and mobility (10 mobility feels close to D1 blink distance) You’ll close gaps/engagements extremely quicker, and all very evasive. I equip retrofurst (shotty) that grants an additional speed boost. Save grenades for health recovery, only use rifts behind cover. Keep the devour timer and you’ll be in great shape

          • I primarily use Devour Voidwalker, but I also use the Attunement of Conduction Stormcaller with decent results. I've enjoyed Fusion Rifles for the Power slot, which allows me to get some dirty multi-kills by activating Devour via Grenade and then using it. Similar strategy for a Shotgun. Nova Bomb can be used either for a solid multi-kill or a Super shutdown utility. I prefer Vortex Grenade, but Axion Bolt is a good choice as well. My second setup is the Conduction Stormcaller (Top Tree). One of the trickiest things to figure out is both when to activate Stormtrance, and how to use the Ionic Blink available. Another thing to remember is that if both Grenade and Melee are charged, you restore to full health, which may allow for some surprising turnarounds. I've dodged Nova Bombs using Ionic Blink, though you have to time it pretty well. Pulse Grenade is still powerful, although both Storm and Arcbolt Grenade are decent. Rifts can't be used as emergencies, but I like them as a way to reinforce a choke point. So I prefer Healing Rift, and then hold down that position until there's more enemies than you can handle. Burst Glide gives, what I find to be, good at slipping out of tight situations. You have to get used to the fact that you have to double-tap Jump for that quick burst of speed to get away. For Exotic Armor, I'm always using Ophidian Aspect; Quickdraw on all weapons plus rapid reloads makes it way too good as a neutral pick. Plus it extends Melee range... as if Warlocks needed more of it. Claws of Ahamkara are a nice choice as well; having two charges of Devour melee is nice, and so is the Chain Lightning melee. Other than that, not a lot of great options, although I will make a mention of Nezerac's Sin having the ability to recharge abilities off of Void kills. This also counts weapons, not just abilities.

Switch back to your Hunter JK, it depends on your class and grenades. You want to do crowd control? Do stormcaller, and arcbolt + Riskrunner to chain stuff maybe, or Storm Grenade + Riskrunner (damage yourself with your own grenade to proc the perk w/ the storm grenade only). Pulse grenades help for spacing. use the super when someone is capping. Dawnblade has the Mid-air dodge if you want it, giving you more options to approach / retreat, and is probably the best all-around class, use solar grenades to space, firebolts to chuck around a corner and get the drop on someone, and fusions as grenade-replica's of throwing knives. Use the super if someone is capping, but use it a ways away. Voidwalker - powerhouse, use only if mastered others. Scatter grenades space out BARELY, and should mostly be used in tight spaces, vortex can be put onto objectives and heavy, and axion bolts can probably track someone, if they aren't shot. Use your super to counter other supers, and be careful of momentum. Rifts are a big problem, you can't just put one down after you get hit, you'll most likely die due to the long time used to simply put it down. Use Healing Rift, since Empowering LITERALLY does nothing at this current moment of time. Probably best to use healing rift after a gunfight and people are a tiny ways away, a sliver on your radar. Exotic pieces are meh most of the time, melee's shouldn't be used unless using weapons that can benefit from them, and even then, most of the melee's don't do enough damage to be effective. Honestly, the best exotic armor pieces are the ones that directly impact your super / weapons, i.e. something that either gives you resistance or something that helps with weapon ready or whatever. Jumps: I mainly use the +control in midair instead of burst glide or blink, because burst gives you no control and blink removes radar and disorients for a couple of seconds. Hope all this helps, good luck.

          • Yep. Warlock is the hardest class to just pickup and play. Always be aware. Always be prepared. Predict encounters. Act rather than react. Number one tip: if injured in a gunfight never try to throw down a healing rift... you'll just waste it. Dead b4 animation triggers... win the fight, then rift. Or better yet, predict the fight. Pick your map location and rift... then fight.

if you're looking to simulate anything close to an agile Hunter as a Warlock you gotta go with VoidWalker and the following set up (Exotic boots:) Transversive Steps- faster Sprint, Slide & crouch Walk plus a high mobility build and you'll feel pretty agile (Jump: Blink,) you said you rely dodging to close gaps & make quick escapes, well that's blink specialty. Coupled with sword or shottie and it should take a while for people to adjust to your movements (Greande )axion Bolt: Axions have very little damage output but are very effective when it comes to pin pointing hidden enenmie's location & baiting people out of cover (Top tree:) attunememt of hunger AKA -Immortal-Devour is your secret weapon, this allows you to consume ur grenade to fully regen all health in about 1 second and keeps healing you 100% after each kill with a 9 sec window , melee kill also grant Devour effect.

          • You feel sluggish, because you're feeling the advantage in agility that Hunters have over other classes. ...and people roll their eyes when Hunter mains want to complain about how "underpowered" Hunters are in PVP. Coming from a Hunter, you'll probably find Dawnblade the easier adjustment. Firebolts are one of the stronger grenades. Burst glide can give you some of the forward speed you're used to as a Hunter. Healing Rifts and a high Recovery build will offset **some** of the reduction in escapability. More importantly, the Dawnblade super is the most agile of the Warlock supers and is a combination of Golden Gun and Hammer of Sol in terms of playability. The only really decent PVP exotic for Warlocks is Ophidian Aspect...which will give you a super-fast reload on all your primary weapons. Hopefully the exotic situation will improve as the sandbox team buffs more exotic armor pieces.

          • Yes!!!You feel slugish because, bungie keeps buffing hunters every patch, giving them thousands of millions of exotic options, OVER BEYOND BROKEN class abilities, arcstriders are overpowered by stupid levels, it's all you see in the crucible at the moment, titans and warlocks are struggling right now, something should be done against this class ASAP.

Dude massive props for trying out a Warlock man. There has already been a comment below which I really second and agree with, it was as follows. "MrMelonized Try out Dawnblade Attunement of Sky with the Transversive Steps. Dodging plus increased sprint speed is really nice. Also try to run max mobility and recovery." It has a great skill gap with it and can be really fun and addictive when you get good with it. I struggle to use anything else these days because of how it feels using dash and the in super movement. For PVE the Sun Bracers are fantastic as well and Transversive steps and Ophidian aspects are magic. If you are about to engage someone under a doorway just float the door and if they come out throw out a fire bolt grenade then clean them up with a side arm or hand cannon from the sky. I find Travelers Judgement works really well and I have been smashed by someone else using last hope doing the same thing. For PVE make use of the increased grenade energy and melee energy when getting kills while in the air. (Especially with Sun Bracers) Stay on the ground when using the super where you can and only take to the sky when it will provide advantage in the open. Using dash mid close combat can really throw your opponent off as well if they are chasing you and you jump up and dash behind them or just use it to confuse them. Use burst glide. Use dash when in super as well for staying at range from roaming supers. May the force be with you guardian.

          • Dawn Blade, Transverse Steps, Mida, and run a 10, 2, 5. Use the bottom tree in PVP or you will just be a floating bullet sponge. Don’t rely on dodge as a Warlock but instead don’t rely on dodge. Your trying to be a Warlock not a dirty Hunter.

          • Burst glide, slowish double taps of jump to ensure you get that initial momentum. Similar timing to Blink. I've had people in their roaming supers fruitlessly chase me around the map until it ran out lol. Warlocks can move fast when they need to ;)

              • Think of a warlock as a cannon made of glass. You can do a lot of damage very quickly, but you're very susceptible to taking a lot of damage just as quickly. Don't even try to use glide to get out of a sticky PvP situation, but it can be used to maneuver around and catch opponents off guard. I like Ophidian Aspect in all game modes. It's not quite as potent as it was in D1, but that extra handling speed will noticably improve your game.

                • Always throw your grenade first when using Dawnblade before popping your super because when you do pop it you get it again straight away.
