First of, this is not bait or a shitpost. This post is actually a post about why I, as a metalhead, believe metal, particularly the extreme metal subgenres, should NOT become mainstream. There is one thing you should keep in mind while reading this, which is that music, no matter how simple, boring, or stupid it is to you personally, is a form of art. Now on to the point of this post. The reasoning behind this isn't very complicated. The reason being, the mainstream is used to having their music be simple, in almost every way. Simple chord progressions, simple lyrics, etc. Song lengths tend to be ariund three to three and a half minutes. Compare that to metal, which often uses umcommon and/or complicated chord structures, song lyrics tend to be meaningful, and the song lengths are usually around five to six minutes, with outliers in both directions. This makes metal a more extreme form of art than what the mainstream is used to. You can probably see the conflict here. This means in order for metal to be mainstream, either the mainstream or metal as an entire genre to change. And don't think the mainstream would be willing to change. This would mean metal would have to be simplified, and that means losing the point of metal. I'm not attempting to bash the mainstream, either. This is just what I've personally noticed, and after some thought, the conclusion I've come to. I'm interested in hearing what the opions of Offtopic are on this.

I've started listening to a lot of indie/alt bands. I can confirm, music that stays out of the limelight stays the most pure.

1 ReplyI thought you meant metal like the solid

Can’t agree more, especially with the first part. People have become so used to saying that anything they don’t like isn’t “real music” and it’s starting to really bug me. That and people stereotyping genres specifically stereotyping metal as satanic

Don't worry it won't be.

I think that people will enjoy the music that they enjoy. If enough people enjoy the longer songs and unique chord structure of metal, it will become mainstream. I remember back when Metallica's videos, "Enter Sandman" and "Unforgiven" received heavy airplay. It wasn't because their music changed all that much, just that the public taste did. Art is complex in nature. On the one hand, the artist should be true to himself. On the other, the artist needs to buy stuff, so some effort to create a product for public consumption is inevitable.

1 ReplyMainstream doesn't automatically mean it's simple. People could suddenly start listening to really well made music and get it in the charts and then that could be mainstream. The problem with mainstream is the numbers. If something sells, then people will make more of it. Then the market for that particular genre will become over saturated.

Metal that is the most commercially successful is the stuff that generally doesn't do it for me. Black album and countdown to extinction are the first two thay come to mind. Even meshuggah's Koloss has that vibe; like how you gonna tell me demiurge has several million views but violent sleep of reason gets no love.

Metal had its hay day in the 80’s and early 90’s. With the rise of grunge, proficiency on instruments became unimportant. Having an image to which depressed kids could easily latch on to was what sold records. Now, that same mentality has seeped into most “mainstream” music today. Anyone can make a record. It’s cheap and insanely easy with today’s software. You don’t even have to be able to sing anymore and autotune can be used live. It’s a phuqing joke now. Rock in general will never again be the popular choice of music.

4 RepliesI disagree, every art form should have some form of "mainstream" or accessible version of its form. Metal fans (not you specifically) are an odd group... They act all non inclusive, what will all the gatekeeping (ironically, most of said gatekeeping involves mainstream bands) but at the same time, have a desire for people to realize the supposed superiority of the genres. How can one come to any realization or enjoyment of it if there's nothing to ease them into it? I can see someone, right now having some knee-jerk response to that question and going on some pretentious diatribe and saying something along the lines of "well, metal isn't a genre to be eased into. It's supposed to come at you hard and fast. No mercy man! Br00t TRVE KVLT for life! 666 praise Satan." to which I say bullshit, everyone had their start somewhere and chances are, it was some soft, mainstream shit. I'm not going to sit here and play Bölzer for someone who isn't in to the genres and expect them to like it or even have any appreciation for it from a musical standpoint. Mainstream shit is a double edged sword. It can be a good thing or it can be a very bad thing. It all depends on what the goals and desires of the individual bands and the members are. There are more thoughts I want to put on this, but my attention span is waning...

I approve.
Although in metal terms, I'm somewhat of a softie, to be honest. The heaviest thing I listen to is Kreator, Meshuggah, Sabaton and System of a Down (I know they're not heavy at all, I just felt like throwing them in, I'm a huge fan of their song Toxicity
3 RepliesIron Maiden has never been mainstream yet they still sellout stadiums everywhere they go for over 30 years now. The reason why metal will never be on the same level as pop or pop-rap/whatever it's called is because girls can't dance to it in clubs.
-
If a genre or sub-genre of music doesn't become mainstream then it won't be that accessible to people. I think that's especially the case with metal. The metal crowd is notoriously elitist and quick to judge other genres/subgenres.

6 RepliesMost of music made over the last century can hardly be described as "art." 99.9% of all music, regardless of it's genre, is utterly disposable crap made to appeal to a certain market demographic. There are maybe 15 bands I consider to be artists.

The day mainstream society willingly gets screamed at I’ll be sure to move to the moon

I highly doubt it'll ever happen so I don't think you need to worry about it.

1 ReplyYa know what's really metal? Paragraphs.

3 RepliesPersonally, I’m fine with it, but it’s just with the message it gives. Take Imagine Dragons for example. They have a few songs that are hardcore metal (Like “I’m so Sorry” or “Radioactive” live. Seriously it’s worth going to one of their concerts) but their message is very easy to decipher. It’s all about making the world and yourself better than what it was, through love and peace. Compare that to another song that is hardcore metal and singing about blood and sex, it doesn’t have a good impact on me. And I don’t think it would have good impact on others.
