On Ana Bray's love interest

The relationship is good.

It's bad because it's boring.

It's bad because it's same-sex.

It's bad for a different reason.

Not a rant about gay people. A lot of people are discussing the way the Warmind comic portrays Ana Bray's relationship with her girlfriend. The driving force in both issues of the comic seems to be Camrin's encouragement and affirmation. A lot of people seem to think that this is particularly irritating. From my perception, most seem to think that it's an obtrusive insertion of a character's sexuality for diversity brownie points. I won't claim to know what the author was thinking when they wrote the dialogue, even though I think there may be an agenda. But I don't find this to be an entirely fair characterization of the way the relationship is actually written. I don't find that the problem is her sexuality, but rather the purpose of the relationship itself.
Romantic relationships are all too common motivators in any fiction. A lost love is a really easy route to convey a character and establish all kinds of things about a character without even touching a pen to paper. A character who has loved and lost is a really open path for creating something original. Ana is a pretty basic example of the broken romantic relationship. This entire relationship, apart from it being same sex, is really pretty generic. I think most of the disapproval for Ana's relationship doesn't come from a place of homophobia or sexism or racism or whatever. The relationship is just boring. It's just... nothing. It's filler. Destiny's stories don't set the precedent for romantic dramas in any form, and the fact that Ana's is so generic and samey is just turd icing on the crap cake.
Tl;Dr: Ana's relationship sucks not because it's gay but because it's totally useless, especially for a universe like Destiny's. Let me know if I missed something, but I think I get the backlash here. EDIT: Poll- meant to say 'boring and useless.'

  • Lots still see her how they want and a comic like that's doesn't really matter or indicate who a character really is ignorant she is ignored would make one of the first bi characters and I just hate that they grub plander to a already small community it's irritating im not a fan of it and don't like it but will never dislike someone cause of it

  • It’s bad because it’s one of the only traits she gets. She is possibly the most powerful Gunslinger ever, maybe of all Hunters, a hero of Twilight Gap, but in Destiny 2 her main trait is “Lesbian”. It’s not bad, it’s just awkward being her mainly expressed trait among others.

    • Even after all the readings with the comic, the only thing we really understand about the relationship is that it’s same-sex and they’re dead. It seems like the ONLY exposition or story we learn about it, is that it’s same-sex and that one fact alone is supposed to make us care about it

      • It’s insignificant literally anywhere outside the comic (since I didn’t read it, I don’t know if it is even there).

It doesn’t really matter it doesn’t need to exist it doesn’t add of affect the story in any way

      • I have about 0 problems with her being a lesbian, thing that bothers me is the comic is basically 90% boring dialogue with her either drowning in water or sand in the background, with no reason to do so and not really giving us any actual lore other than the little blurb at the beginning from Rasputin.

          • You need to add a "who cares" option on your poll.

          • The only problem I have is that it plays into the Bury Your Gays trope yet again. No one gets diversity points for including a dead love interest as character motivation. Especially when it’s a plot point as ridiculously overdone as yet another dead lesbian. There was no point in including her at all if they were just going to reveal that she died.
