What happened to the old Rasputin?

You know, the one from d1 that massacred the iron lords with Siva and blew up the last fireteam the vanguard sent to make contact and was supposed to be the Warmind of earth. This one in D2 just sat there when xol and nokris invaded and either let Zavala enter his mindlab or couldn’t stop him. And I’m still confused on why Rasputin’s mind is on mars and what happened to Charlemagne and what connection this all has to the Warmind bunker on Io.

  • Wow people need to really check out the Ishtar Collective Website that has all the lore content and find out that none of this contradicts each other. For one warminds were actually AI's used as oversight for critical areas like Clovis Bray, Ishtar Academy, Cosmodrome and IO, in the grimoire cards a complete story of a group of Ishtar scientist actively call an unnamed warmind to rescue them from a vex simulation and another one (if not the same warmind) is assigned to another group of scientist of the Ishtar Collective to test out a re-creation of a vex gate. Another set of warminds are referenced in destiny lore as subminds (Charlemagne, Voluspa, and Malahayati) who are directly connected to Rasputin. Also stated in Destiny 2 by Ana is that the one in the cosmodrome is a fragment and only part of Rasputin and grimoire cards state that Rasputin has overwritten his protocols and subroutines and that all this time he was trying to play the long game rather than a small victory. Besides I don't actually believe that Siva is totally under the Rasputin Fragments control as it never used to to defend itself against the Fallen like it did against the Iron Lords and maybe the Siva had its own subroutines and attacked the Iron Lords on its own(this part is just personal speculation not actual concrete fact.) Also I would be opposed to interacting with Guardians too because after fully awakening and receiving the data on guardians from his earth facilities, Rasputin notes that the vanguard did not view or treat him as a being but as mere tool or weapon, where as Ana and the Bray family built him to be much more.

  • They are all Rasputin. But they are different aspects of his “mind” and “personality”. In order to survive The Collapse, he spread himself across different systems and different planets. We have been working all this time to try to reunite all of his functions. Now imagine that the part of Rasputin that was in the Cosmodrome was part that didn’t have access to any moral subroutines. So you wind up with a “Rasputin” that behaves like a sociopath or an angry toddler. So when the Iron Lords try to take SIVA, he just ruthlessly kills them. Just like he did the Vanguard team that tried to contact him and they later “found pieces spread across the Cosmodrome” . What changed was the fifth mission in vanilla D1. The Lost Array. The antennae we activated and defended from the Hive allowed Rasputin that was in The Cosmodrome to start communicating with the fragments on Mars. Rasputin’s behavior changed almost immediately. He started turning to us for help instead of seeing Guardians as another adversary. Both because he was more completely integrated, and Guardians were showing themselves to be allies in protecting humanity and not the warlords and power seekers the Chosen were prior to The Iron Lords. In Warmind the largest and most primary part of Rasputin comes back on line..,and now we have a fully awake and fully integrated Rasputin. For The first time Rasputin actually **speaks** rather than trying to indirectly communicate with music and poetry. Now we see a more mature and relational Rasputin. Who has all his faculties now. But has clearly transcended his initial programming. On of the reasons why Rasputin did what he did was that he realized during The Collapse that conventional victory was impossible. So he basically did the equivalent of calling in an air strike on his own position as the system was being overrun. Allowing disaster, but staving off extinction. To allow the nature of the fight to change: The Traveller’s intervention; the creation of Guardians, and time for Rasputin himself to evolve. That process is now complete and Rasputin’s ready to ally himself with The Traveller and the Vanguard in the defense of Humanity. But making it clear that he does not serve either of them. ”I have no equal.”

    • Honestly, this is what pissed me off most about Warmind. Not Ana Bray coming back from the dead. Not Nokris having no explaination in the story. Not Nokris and Xol being incredibly easy. What pisses me off it how they completely retconned and changed Rasputin. The story pre-Warmind was that humanity had several Warminds, with Rasputin being the Warmind of Earth. The story now is that Rasputin has only been the only Warmind and all of the other “Warminds” were Subminds. The thing is, this makes absolutely no sense with everything that we’ve known. Why is it that Rasputin, a Russian speaking AI with a Russian name, LIVES ON MARS INSTEAD OF RUSSIA!? And in the Sleeper Simulant quest in Destiny 1, the Mars Warsat was referenced under Charlemagne instead of Rasputin. Bungie attempted to pass off this retcon as simply having bad information, and it failed horribly. But it gets worse. Remember the Last Array Mission? Apparently there was no point to that since Rasputin was on all of the other worlds already, if we go by the new Bungie story. In the Grimoire, orbital strikes on Mars were attributed to us opening up the Array. Guess not, since Rasputin was not just already on Mars, but has his main facility on Mars. The most disturbing thing about this is Bungie’s philosophy for adding new story to the game. Instead of adapting new ideas to fit the existing story, they are jamming their new ideas into the existing story regardless of the coherency of it. I’ve thought of tons of ways that the same story in Warmind could have gone down in a way that fits in with what has been established, but Bungie doesn’t seem to care about that. Their way of doing things as they are now can’t sustain itself. People care about Destiny and it’s story too much for Bungie to continue disregarding and mishandling it like they do.

      • Good question. Lord Saladin said that "Rasputin hasn't been merely a Warmind for a long time". Was he referring to the Rasputin of Earth, the broken and fragmented version? Or the Martian version, who appears to have all his marbles, but operates as a law until himself?

      • I miss this Rasputin... Ghost Fragment: Mysteries ...from a red space before victory I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone. They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn. Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT. Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive? I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well: IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins. I am made to win and now I see the way.

He got bored listening to Tvhaichovsky and decided to read Russian literature instead. He finished Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and got half way through Tolstoy’s War and Peace and decided to commit computercide by Warsat. The problem is that he has terrible aim and can’t hit himself to end it all, so now all the warsats are landing on Mars, but not on him.

          • This is what has been pieced together. Back before us, the Warminds were a legend, not really a myth because people knew without a doubt they existed but they kinda got the King Arthur treatment. It wasn't really till we came along that things changed, we interacted with a Warmind, one of many we thought. But turns out it was only a fragment of a Warmind. It wasn't until we got the Comms Array back online that part of Rasputin was able to reconnect to the whole. The Whole of course was the main systems for Rasputin which was still dormant on Mars. But once the fragments from Earth reconnected it powered back up. However from the way it looks it was content to just ignore us and study the threat at it's front doorstep, Xol and Nokris. It wasn't until the Traveler was awakened that things changed, Xol was roused from it's slumber and Rasputin had to take a more aggressive posture with the Hive on Mars. How he was going to battle them, is not known could be a shit ton of Frames stored somewhere or he figured rain enough Warsats down he would eventually get one of the big baddies. Heck it could have been as simple as the Wasats were a signal flare to bring us dumb Guardians in, without actually asking for help. While he knew something had to be done about the Hive. He was also around during the Collapse and knows there is a threat out there even more dangerous. For him to reveal and deplete what is surely limited resources now would not be the optimal usage of said recourses. So he is content to let us do the heavy lifting and to provide what support he can spare without revealing his true power. How did Zavala he get in, to think Ana Bray was the only one who had knowledge on Rasputin is a tad naive. The amount of reports that Zavala had access to would probably stun a water buffalo in its tracks. And being the person he was, he wouldn't trust anyone else when it came to Rasputin. Plus like I said this could have been what Rasputin wanted, who better to deal with the cockroaches than the Leader of the Vanguard. With him in charge he could keep Rasputin a secret, but still eliminate a threat to Earth.

            • The Rasputin that killed the iron lords was the Rasputin before we had connected him to the array and had saved him from the SABER shank. People that he didn’t know, with powers that he couldn’t understand, entered his vault and tried to access golden age tech. At that point, he had decided to stop protecting humanity in favor of protecting himself. He used SIVA to kill the iron lords in order to protect the weapons he had so that they wouldn’t fall into the hands of people he didn’t trust. The Rasputin we know now is a Rasputin that we have helped before, and who most likely trusts us to an extent. Along with that, when we spoke to him, we had Anna Bray with us, who is a person he is very closely connected to.

            • So knowing Rasputin’s potential arsenal, he could’ve sent constructs down to kill Nokris IF he knew where to send them. And I’m not sure if he could’ve killed Xol with how close he was without damaging himself. But honestly yeah I thought the same thing.

            • The only time Charlemagne was mentioned, was during a developer interview before Destiny was even released. The lore community believed Charlemagne to be a Warmind that the community wrote it into their lore. As for Rasputin being on Mars, he is a computer AI he can go where ever there is enough space for him to download into. Hasn’t anyone actually seen or read science fiction where A.I.s take control of other computers?

Actually it's sound : / The iron lords found Siva and tried to use it, setting it free. Rasputin knew this was not a good idea so a fragment of him on earth fought the iron l's because they were a threat to humanity, going to release Siva and all. Big R's main body is still hibernating in Hellas basin at that time, it's said he woke up when the traveler wiped Ghaul out. Giving Xol time to set up his little underground house-cult with Nokris. Zavala waiting in the airlock is plain BS, just bad storytelling/writing to me but hey, we're far from the depths of the grimoire and books of sorrow now. I remember Rasputin absorbing all the other warminds at some point but I can't check my sources now.
