Unexplainable errors in the Halo canon. (Spoilers)

Here is a compilation of errors that we, the universe elite, have created in light of Halo: Reach's launch. Note, that this is STILL a work in progress, and will be upgraded as new breaks are located.

Error: Reach was invaded on July 24th. Proof: All Halo media has always stated Reach fell in one day, and that day was August 30th. Sources:Ghosts of Oynx, First Strike, Fall of Reach.

Error: Alpha Company was wiped out completely during Operation: PROMETHEUS in 2537. Carter, Emile, and Jun should not be alive. Proof: Halo: Ghosts of Onyx goes into quite a bit of detail on Operation: PROMETHEUS. Spartan-III Alpha Company (comprised of 300 Spartans) were sent to K7-49 on a mission to destroy plasma reactors the Covenant were using to liquefy metallurgical components. The operation was a success, but it is explicitly stated that it cost the lives of every Spartan-III on the asteroid because they got cut off from their Calypso-class Exfiltration crafts and completely lost their unit cohesion. Halo Reach chooses to ignore this. Carter (A-259), Emile (A-239), and Jun (A-266) are a part of Noble Team when they should have been dead years ago; Bungie have given us no explanation on how they escaped at all. Sources: - Ghosts of Onyx, page 83-87. - Halo Reach

Error: ONI's actions as well as the Cole Protocol. According to the Cole Protocol, if any Covenant Forces are detected, then all NAV bases and ships should purge their computers of information to protect Earth and the inner colonies. Proof:If Covenant are detected on Reach on July 23rd, how is it that a month later, there are still computers with information to Earth still active? If ONI hadn't taken more than a month, than Blue team wouldn't have been deployed to the Circumference, and James wouldn't have died, and Linda wouldn't have been in a coma. Infact, they would have been on Reach with Red team. Sources: Pg 289 of The Fall of Reach gives information on the purging of Info not complete. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/United_Nations_Space_Command_Emerg ency_Priority_Order_098831A-1

Error: Carter, Emile, and Jun's age. Carter is born in 2520. He was 11 years old when Alpha Company began their training. This puts him 5 years above the previously stated age, and it makes no sense at all. Why would they have an 11 year old on the same training regime as a 4 year old? It's too large of a difference, and it's an error that can be avoiding by simply changing his birthdate. This same thing goes for Emile and Jun, who are older than 6 years old at Alpha training. Proof: Page 69(I'm doing this by memory, I may be wrong.) of Ghosts of Oynx states that all of Alpha Company was comprised of 4, 5, and 6 year old children that he was going to have to forge into the best warriors humanity has ever seen. Source: Ghosts of Oynx, page 69.

Error: Lack of Orbital MAC's. Proof: Reach had a number of Orbital MAC's that were used in the battle of Reach. They were present on August 30th, so they should have been present during the mission "Long Night of Solace" in Halo: Reach. Had they been present, they Jorge wouldn't have died. Where were they? Source: Fall of Reach, First Strike, Halo: Reach

Error: Pillar of Autumn on Reach. Proof During the final level of Halo: Reach, the Pillar of Autumn is on the planet, and isn't in space, preparing for the Prophet mission. This COMPLETELY destroys much of Halo's canon. If the ship wasn't in space, than the Spartans of Red Team would have never jumped to the planet, meaning that the 4 spartans who died, would have still been alive. Which could have hanged the outcome of the battle. PLUS, the space op to destroy the Circumference's NAV data wouldn't have happened. So Chief, James, and Linda had no reason to NOT be part of Red team. So the chief wouldn't have been on the Autumn, so Halo: CE wouldn't have happened. Why schedule a mission to capture a prophet, when there's a full scale invasion of Humanities second most important planet? Sources: Halo: Reach, Fall of Reach Special Thanks: -ajw23207 -MOB74656 -xXFatal v1 -opog -Kippa If I've missed any errors, please, point them out. I'll add them to the OP, or try to explain them. Also, if you have any explanation to these canon errors, please, explain how they fit into canon, and the sources. [Edited on 09.16.2010 9:03 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: privet caboose The SMAC's would've still been in orbit on LNoS, yet we didn't see a single one.
True, I believe they were in orbit - but just reffered too by Kat, seen to have taken out a corvette over Sword Base and perhaps represented by the yellow dots on the map inside another corvette. Seems to be everyone's biggest complaint is the lack of these super-weapons.

 •
Posted by: Viper Skills Exactly. Fighting on the Cairo and watching it fire in Halo 2 was amazing. It gave me a sense of knowing what was going on, what was at stake (with Earth right below me) and the scale of the battle. Reach should have been that and more. I mean the game, not the battle, I know the battle for Earth took weeks. But the one time where MAC stations are expected they are only mentioned by Kat in an elevator. And the sad part is you could tell her little talk of MAC platforms a half-assed attempt at pleasing the real fans because (as mentioned numerous times) once the Super Carrier uncloaked it would have been blasted to kingdom come by multiple platoforms. And another thing that really annoys the hell out of me is the captions in the campaign. Especially LNoS it says, "Covenant occupied space". Uh hell no? Reach was a cool campaign and whatnot, but it felt more of a campaign to save some other almost-as-important planet. Not Reach. In Reach, we should have seen guns blazing left and right, radio transmissions of the planet's downfall, cutscenes of massive orbital guns falling into the atmosphere, and the remains of the UNSC fleet. But instead they chose to appeal to the "I have no damn idea what is going on" guy. The guy who has already stopped playing Reach and has no idea they even wrote books concerning the Halo Universe. That guy. Which is almost insulting given the fact we were all thrust into this amazing Universe at the END of the war with Halo: CE. So many questions... What is Reach? Who is this glowing blue girl? Why am I a walking tank? What is this floating hoola-hoop? What are these jellyfish? Why are my men being mutated? Why are the Covenant shooting at these green things? What is that floating blue orb? Why am I fighting for him? That is the tip of the iceberg. Even with such a confusing storyline Halo: CE is the most loved Halo game among Halo fans and always will be. It was proof that we didn't need a storyline that was the same thing as a picture book - we had passed a high school reading level. It was proof multiplayer could be both casual, fun, while at the same time the most competitive shooter the console has ever seen.
In a nutshell - yes. I love Halo: Reach, campaign is a good blast - but it didn't feel like an epic struggle. Ok, if Bungie had done a level in and around a SMAC station it may of played too similar to Cairo Station from H2, but it still would of been fun. Now, if they had produced a level featuring the Sabre flying in and around the SMAC's and the massive battle ensuing then you would have had a problem fitting into the campaign as we know it. Where would you have put that level ? It would have to have gone in during the retake of the Sabre launchpads and before Jorge sacrificed himself, (as getting back into a Sabre after doing a few levels out of one would have ruined the unique feel of the level LNoS) but the timeline would of been too messed up (with the arrival of the Cov and UNSC fleets) So it doesn't look like it could of been levered in some how. Shame

JDYeash937 MkII Regarding the battle of Anchor 9 / LNoS True, arrogance can play a major factor in things, but after receiving no comms messages from the Corvette (after the comms were jammed) and the fact that the comms would have been running again afer the destruction of the UNSC Savannah (source of the blocking transmissions) surely the Shipmaster on the LNoS would have put 2 and 2 together...just as well he didn't ! Regarding the yellow clustered dots: Seeing as the Corvette and the LNoS were on their own and there were no yellow dots on the global map on their own, just a cluster of yellow dots, as well as there being no other Covie vessels in sight - leads me to believe that these may be UNSC related tags. Yes, they should in theory be flashing red traingles and there is a red flashing square on the global map (could be the SMAC generator facility or Sword / Castle Base) but I just wonder if they were our only clue to the missing SMAC platforms? (sorry about lack of quotations but the iPhone is being a pain... [Edited on 11.18.2010 2:57 PM PST]

 • It is unfortunate that Bungie chose they route they did when it comes to storyline. They could have easily stayed alongside previous canon but chose to create a story for the person who is just picking up Halo for the first time. AKA: Not their dedicated fans.

Rest of the answers did get me thinking - some nice work there Here are a few more.. How did the Long Night of Solace not see the battle between the UNSC Savannah and the target corvette ? Yes, the comms were jammed, but you could physicaly see the dogfighting going on....surely ?
Errr... Well, being Elites, they probably decided that they would easily repel the incompetent humans. Especially when they saw the Savannah explode, they would not know that it had been infiltrated by human forces and taken over.
...actually, I have seem to run out...will come back with more ! I am asking these questions, not because I am trying to find fault with Reach, but because of the enjoyable discussion trying to answering them ! ...one more thing - did anyone notice (on the mission LNoS) that there wasa global map on display in the Corvette. There were clusters of yellow dots in orbits - were they possibly the oribital defense platforms ? Could it be that they were simply out of position, the UNSC expecting an assualt from another vector ?
Do you remember how many there were, if they were clustered, and where they were positioned (spacing, not a location lol)? From the fact that it is a yellow marker, I think it's just additional Covenant ships - probably the other Corvettes. Rapid Conversion marked the SFTE drives with thruster pods hovering around the Tiara over Harvest as 'red triangles', and every other human vehicle we see on Covenant ships in Contact Harvest is displayed as a red triangle. It is also said that 'kinetics won't register on [Covenant] scans', and that they can only speculate as to locations of missile platforms (said about the Tiara). It is possible that the yellow markers are ODPs, and the Luminary does not know how to identify them. They are larger than most UNSC ships, are largely stationary, and seem to be holding fire. They are also solely kinetic weapon platforms, so the Luminary would hesitate to identify it as a contact.

Why did Jorge disengage his re-entry pack when leaving the Sabre to oversee the transit of the slipspace bomb) Upon seeing the mass build up of Covenant hardware at the end of "Nightfall" surely (if they existed) a massive SMAC bomabrdment would of solved the problem ? The beloved SMAC's again.... - after seeing the LNoS decloak and butcher the UNSC Grafton why was no effort made by orbital defenses to rain down some heavy firepower on it ? By the time the LNoS decloaked and made it to orbit surely the UNSC would of tried to harass it ? ...actually, I have seem to run out...will come back with more ! •
Posted by: Richomack360 Riddle me these (as I have no answers) Why were Anchor 9's defences down ?
They could have been as unlucky as RSO Fermion was in TFOR - their science library (with masses of navigational data) was offline for repairs, and they only managed to shut it down by nuking the station with its own reactor. I can't remember the speech from the Anchor 9 level, but its possible their weapons were undergoing diagnostics and maintenance when the Covenant attacked.
Why did a top secret launch faciility have such weak defenses?
Not much you can do about an invasion when it comes straight down on top of you, inside your compound. Plus the LNoS had been wreaking 7 shades of havoc for the last 2 days, it's possible that the base's defences had been significantly reduced
Why did no Pelican's / Falcon's deploy from the PoA to assist six in covering the PoA ?
Better question - why did none of the 50mm AA cannons on the PoA's hull take out the Phantoms and Banshees, allowing 6 to focus on the Cruiser?
Why did no SMACS try to hit the spires in TotS ?
I think Bungie must have scrapped the existence of Reach's ODPs, there's certainly no use of them, ever. UNSC forces and civilians would not have been in danger, unless they insisted on an assault anyway.
Why do we see no Cobras, Vultures, Cyclops' etc ? despite being the biggest military planet ?
All are very old vehicles, scrapped. Cyclopses are actually scrapped, MJOLNIR was their replacement. Cobras are possible too vulnerable, and Vultures too slow for combat operations against the Covenant.
Why did no-one indentify the blood encrusted footprints left by Elites in the farmhouse (when you find 2 dead marines) on Winter Contingency ?
In fairness, they could have been left by Moa - the doors were open in that building. They should have thought they looked suspiciously large and reptilian, however. Also, I think they were left by Skirmishers, not Elites. Elites only have 2 very wide toes - the footprints have 3 long, spindly toes.
I ahve more "why" moments that I list later on
I eagerly await them. [Edited on 11.17.2010 9:34 AM PST]

I can't recall any point in any of the Halo games which Master Chief could run that fast so everything is slightly wrong in one way or another. Lets just try and enjoy it as best we can :)
I dunno, chief ran pretty fast when that building where you killed Regret started getting glassed while he was still on it...

 •
Posted by: thatguyaknow I remember them saying somewhere that they wouldnt be follow the book canon 100% or something like that. Especially The Fall of Reach vs. Halo: Reach
No, I watched every single interview that was ever put on the web about Halo: Reach, and the ONLY thing Bungie said was that; "Halo Reach does not follow the same story as The Fall of Reach. The events in the book still happen, they're just happening on a different part of the planet." Welp, they lied. Kinda hard for the events in the book(Like the Mark V testing) to happen when The Covenant are invading the planet...

Especially The Fall of Reach vs. Halo: Reach
Doesn't follow the book does not directly mean breaking canon, what they meant was that Halo Reach is not a direct re-tell of the story of The Fall of Reach. Bungie has not said anything with regards to the canon breaks Reach caused, before or after release. (as far as I know)

A Longsword would have been cool to use indeed, I'm not really that impressed with how it looks though, it looks rather like a modern day stealth bomber to me.
Why a whole new vehicle? Why not just call it a Sabre, but it actually is just a shielded Longsword? That would have pleased all the true fans, as they finally get their hands on one of the most powerful vehicles in the Haloverse. I would love to have taken the rotary 110 to a Seraph, and pwned it. But no.
Easier to incorporate experimental shielding technology into a new vehicle than trying to incorporate it into an old vehicle maybe?

 •
Posted by: privet caboose
Posted by: JDYeash937 MkII
Posted by: Orphius_Rex I'm going to go and replay this misson tonight, and have a look at that Corvette getting shot. People in this thread have theorised that the shields on the Corvette were down due to it needing to deploy Banshees and Phantoms etc, so it could have been taken out by something like the Grafton from Tip of The Spear.
There's a point, at no point in the game do we see Corvettes with shielding systems. The SAM battery on Exodus strikes bare hull on the Corvette, there is no obvious shielding on the SWORD Base Corvette when it is hit... Why give Stealth Corvettes (with no known offensive weapons systems) and Ministry of Tranquility vessels shields, and yet not award them to close orbital support vessels, ships of the line designed for naval combat? Ardent Prayer (LNoS) also has no evident shielding systems, as they are not triggered when fired upon. So... why is this? And why the hell did Longswords (64m long ships designed to harass capital ships with fire, and armed with super-heavy missiles, 120mm ventral guns and a 110mm rotary barrelled gun) need to have a half dozen banshees and a phantom taken out when a short, sprayed burst from the 110 or a single heavy missile could have taken ALL of them out of the sky themselves? (New post because it is a different point entirely)
Not going to lie, ever since CE Longswords have been my favorite vehicle. I think the space mission would've been much better for everyone if we had been flying a vehicle that's been in every single game, yet we've never gotten a chance to fly it ourselves. The thing looks badass, has powerful weaponry, and I think it makes more sense that a ship with shielding(which contradicts everything we knew about UNSC ships.) Also, I'm pretty sure the Corvette doesn't have shielding. But then again, in LnoS, it's constantly deploying elite drop pods, you can see them coming from the bottom of the ship. It's possible it released all unnecessary crew onto the planet, knowing it was surrounded.
No totally unnecessary, they knew already that the rest of the Covenant fleet was on their way, so they started the invation instead of waiting in space.

That would have pleased all the true fans, as they finally get their hands on one of the most powerful vehicles in the Haloverse. I would love to have taken the rotary 110 to a Seraph, and pwned it. But no.
No true scotsman: 'Cause if you didn't demand a Longsword be playable in Reach, you're not a True Fan. Longswords are declassified. Ergo, Six could not have had a backstory wherein he tested a secret super prototype.

 • When i first heard about space ship battles I thought i was going to see the Big MAcs in action and probably defending them from small covies warships in a longsword of some sort. Or even a Pelican.

 •
Posted by: OrderedComa Reach is basically where most of the R&D for the UNSC was done, before it fell anyway, that's why we have the AAs, that's why the Falcons are only in this game, and that's why the Sabres had shields, they're all experimental tech that was lost when Reach fell.
Posted by: Orphius_Rex
Posted by: JDYeash937 MkII The Pillar of Autumn is armed with many 50mm autocannons designed to take out enemy single ships. Shielded Seraphs and boarding craft. In the ending/credits cutscene, they look more like 250mm guns. Why did PoA not try and keep the pressure off you whilst on the gun, and destroy the Banshees and Seraphs themselves? Would have been far smarter, and also preserved some of the (presumably) few Mass Driver slugs for gutting the Cruiser.
See the "highlighted" bit. What was a Mass Driver doing in a shipwrecking yard anyway? Seems a bit convenient. Wouldn't it make more sense to be manning one of the Autumn's 50mm's or providing air support with a Longsword? Or even a Shortsword? Although in The Cole Protocol Juliana explains that the Mass Drivers in the Rubble are used to shoot Slag/Usable Alloy rounds across the Rubble, controlled by Juliana herself. Hmmm.
My guess is that Mass Driver slugs are used basically as wrecking balls, to shred sections of armour plate that are too large to remove, yet too badly damaged to salvage. Or to properly scrap ships, or to fire reactor components (although where too, I have no idea) safely during decommissioning. One of the marines does say that they 'jury rigged a mass driver up top' for defence. Still does not explain why 40 guns of 50mm calibre designed for self defence (at least 15-20 of which were facing in the desired direction) were shut down and inactive.

I'm sure if it had been a cutscene or something that the Autumn would have been helping to defend itself.
