Translating hive names/titles in "Strange Terrain" strike

Playing through the Nokris strike I noticed that a lot of the hive had names written in a "hive-ish" manner. So, being a linguist, I did some research and was able to approximate some translations. Namuš - honoured (from Arabic, Greek, Sanskrit, Pali for virtue, honour, respect) Šimmumah - (high) priest (Sumerian) Kvada - Destroyer (kvadda in Swedish means to crash, break, destroy, demolish) Ugul Gar - supplicant (Babylonian for pray) Kamus - scribe/scholar? (from Indonesian, Malay, Turkish for dictionary. Had difficulty with this one) Šuluh - purifier (Sumerian for purification, ritual cleansing) Šuluh-teth - [unsure, wasn't able to find a translation for "teth", assuming it means someone of a higher position in a hive context as a šuluh-teth knight is a major] ur-Nokru - of Nokris ("ur" appears to act as a genitive marker/preposition like "of" in English, "Nokru" would then be the genitive form of "Nokris" with case inflection changing the "is" to "u". Similar to Balto-Slavic languages as well as others) Any additional insights or correction?

  • I know this is an old thread, but my weird hobby is checking Hive-related words in the [http://psd.museum.upenn.edu/nepsd-frame.html]Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary, and I found some interesting things I wanted to share: ‘kamuš’ - ‘worm’. Kamus Knights, Wizards, Ogres etc. appear(ed) in the Will of Thousands strike; think about how in this mission a WORM god attacked Rasputin. ‘namuš’ - ‘death’. Namuš Knights, Wizards, Vanquishers etc. appear(ed) in the Strange Terrain strike; think about how this was the mission where we learned Nokris was a necromancer. ‘ugul ĝar’ - ‘to pray’. Ugul Gar Knights had been resurrected by Nokris and carried relics which enabled us to shatter crystals in both Strange Terrain and the Nokris fight in Arrivals. ‘šuluh’ - ‘ritual clensing’. Šuluh and Šuluh-teth Knights appeared in Strange Terrain; I did not find any translation for ‘teth’, so I assume it’s a made-up Hive word, maybe indicating a higher rank (Šuluh-teth Knights were Majors). ‘šimmumah’ - ‘high priest’. Šimmumah ur-Nokru was a Wizard summoned by four Knights in Strange Terrain. ‘merga’ - ‘first’. Thanatologist Merga was a Wizard encountered in Strange Terrain.

  • All good stuff. I wasn't able to find meanings to some of these, especially 'teth'. Just thought I'd add this: during the Nokris boss fight there are Wizards that spawn with the title "THANATOLOGIST IR'HANDI" Also, the Šuluh-Teth knights are the ones who perform the summoning ritual (around the plate) and the Ugul Gar knights drop the relics to destroy the floating crystals. Don't know the significance behind this just yet though. Still working...

    • How is Bungie coming up with these names? Do they just spin a wheel and pick a language?
