I don't typically enjoy making posts pointing out what is "wrong" with a game or any medium of storytelling, but I've recently figured out why (at least for me) the story for D2 as a whole has been disengaging.
The way that the story has been delivered in Destiny reminds me of the backlash from true fans of the Transformers when the Michael Bay movies were released. Those movies suffer from horribly inconsistent tones, pandering dialogue, bad pacing, and anticlimactic moments. Also, there are many immature jokes crammed into the movies that further kill the tone that could have been set. The original G1 cartoon, while made to promote toy sales, still delivered backstory and character development while making it clear who was doing what and why there was a war taking place.
Between the Marvel Comics Transformers and IDW Transformers (both very entertaining and engaging) we have been given a series that delivers mature topics and entertaining conflict with actual stakes. The Michael Bay movies have centered around a horribly unlikable human protagonist, Sam Witwicky, and an almost unstoppable Autobot Optimus Prime and non speaking hero Bumblebe. In all of these movies the stakes for battle are immediately removed because Optimus arrives and removes the heads of the Decepticons. His supposed companions provide little more than cover fire while there is high collateral damage.
Let us think now about Destiny. The other guardians are just incapable of doing what our savior character has done despite there being little to no apparent difference. Plot mcguffins are the norm and it all boils down to Prime/Bumblebee/the Guardian saving the day in a way that doesn't seem different than what anyone else could do. The human/sidekick character (Sam/Ghost) who forced bizarre humor into the narrative accompanies the "special" non speaking hero (Guardian/Bumblebee) on adventures.
The tag line for Destiny has been "become legend." We aren't becoming legend, and sadly never will if this continues. Our Guardian is the embodiment of a Mary Sue who doesn't even have a voice. How is that our Guardian can display the intelligence to progress through the Totems and systems of the Hive Dreadnaught, yet we function as little more than an errand boy/girl. We used that type of higher thinking which even Toland praised and yet we try to brute force our way through a Vex barrier...
Ghaul said to us that he has become legend as he wielded the power of the light, cycled easily through subclasses, and even self resurrected. Compare him to us. He wielded nothing more than a primary and weak super attacks that couldn't kill us. He ran slowly and remained in the air as a slow moving target. Ghaul became a D2 Guardian which I believe is something to think about. He was insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But hey, at least he became legend. Someone had to.
Edit: Here's to hoping for better execution in September. My intention isn't to bash, but rather make a point that the inconsistencies are apparent. I would love to see this game make an about face.

1 ReplyAgain there's places where our gurdian could talk and the line is stolen by our goast. When the gurdian speaking keeping the mood serious instead of cracking a joke like the goast does, the story would've been much better.

Ghaul did booted us from his ship. So yeah, he was legend at that time and in the end.

Pretty interesting arguments. It bothers me that we don’t speak anymore, and takes away from the story a lot.

3 RepliesWhat you want out of Destiny will just make it weak and pathetic. Get a job producing so you can run some other IPs into the ground. :( Also, IDW over bayverse? Ug.

3 RepliesEdited by Chef Senpai: 5/8/2018 3:31:50 PMWell in terms of how we do it, not all guardians are equal. Osiris's more powerful than most warlocks, and in terms of power we don't compare him. The reason we can do things is that we are still unusually strong, and willing to risk our permanent life. We were the only ones brave enough to go the the moon after all the massacres, and we're the only ones willing and able to fight oryx. We just happen to be the strongest out of the current generation, other older generation either died out over time, or stopped fighting and got a job, like shax
