I just bought the game on PC and am currently level 12, so I've only been playing for a couple of days. I rolled a Hunter and am really enjoying the game so far. The only thing is, I just can't get to grips with the fact that the Hunter's special (the dodge) just seems so pointless in comparison to the other two classes specials.
If reloading took 10 seconds then I'd understand, although the majority of the time so far I've forgotten to even use the dodge because it seems quicker and more intuitive to just press 'R' on the keyboard to reload, as I've been doing for years in other FPS games.
Does there come a point later in the game where the auto reload of dodge actually comes in useful at all? I like the Hunter, although the dodge mechanic is really making me consider rerolling to a different class, so I'm just trying to convince myself to stick with the Hunter at the moment. The dodge itself doesn't even seem to be useful for dodging enemy attacks as I can just double jump which seems to be a much better way of getting away from enemy attacks.

Cloak Dodge is amazing for the Nightstalker. And use marksmans Dodge to insta reload a rocket launcher or shotgun that DOES take like ten seconds to reload and pour hilarious damage into a boss for PvE.

1 ReplyCareful, you're new here, that kind of talk is not allowed. Only Titans and Warlocks get to complain about stuff.
-
1 ReplyWhen modded and used properly, it allows a Hunter to have their Melee Ability up every 12 seconds using Gamblers Dodge. Arcstriders and Nightstalkers have very strong Melee Abilities for both PvE and PvP. Not so much for Gunslinger, but their passive perks are tied to firearm usage, so Marksmans Dodge works better. It's not a useless Class Ability. It's damned good.

They couldn't come up with, or didn't care to come up with a better idea so they just said, "give the hunters a perk from the nightstalker tree but make the warlock and titan one inventive and cool"

Edited by Mar: 4/29/2018 7:15:53 AMin PvE it has its uses. I prefer the dodge that gives you melee energy rather than the reload one however both work. The melee one especially can be fun to use to get a unending melee chain with the arc sub class. using it as a quick way to move around a battlefield is very helpful for positioning, especially if AoE abilities are being thrown around by the enemies or if homing attacks are used because you can clear a large horizontal area quickly which usually throws off the AI tracking a bit. With nightstalker you can use it to batman your way out of harm's way or use it to slip past harder enemies without holding aggro on them, letting you get into better places to hit them without them shooting at you. With gunslinger you can use it to quickly go into and out of cover to land hits with throwing knives or to fire off a golden gun and then quickly duck back into cover without staying in the same spot. Its honestly a great mobility mechanic, just no one really uses it much for that. You see it more in PvP but its a blast to use in PvE if you try and get creative with it. I use my hunter as a 3rd alternate character so im not the best with it, but its alot of fun to use if you get clever with its use.

Pve? Yeah, you’re correct. Pvp? It’s arguably the best class ability, at least in certain situations.
-
Invisibility- void Melee recharge- arc Dps with rockets- solar I find them all pretty handy.
-
Its only useful with power weapons in endgame, because the roll cancels the time on the reload.
-
2 RepliesLongtime hunter here, it’s useless. Sure it has some uses like turning a corner or actually dodging something, but the utility of it is utterly useless. Warlocks can heal and titans can protect with their barricade, we just roll ... And the fact it’s on a cooldown is silly, like you ran out of stamina from rolling or something lol

Edited by TotalDramaGamer: 4/27/2018 4:12:12 AMIf you rank up and get the Nightstalker Subclass you'll be able to turn invisible upon dodging. That's a more planned use that you're going for. Something you can always do if you keep it in mind. If you treat the dodge like a reload, and only a reload, it's going to not shine so much. It shines much better when you suddenly need it to try and get away from some enemies. I don't mean like 'oh look, I can see they're coming so I better move' where you can plan it all out and stuff. It's more of a 'wow where did my health go?!?' kind of dodge where it helps out the most. Which, of course, is very situational. You can't actively use it that way all the time (since the whole aim of FPS is to not be in that situation in the first place) but it is useful when you do get in a situation you didn't plan on being in. Or, you could use it for the melee synergy since it gives you back melee energy if you're close to enemies. But that's more of a playstyle thing and not utility at the higher levels. -- In the end there is a clear use for it on the Nightstalker so, if nothing else, you can use it as an invisibility tool. Also, to be fair, the dodge reload is pretty nice on slow reload weapons. Rockets, some hand cannons, and other heavy hitting things can really come in handy with a dodge. Another good example is almost every shotgun in the game. Unload your full auto shotty into an enemy's face, dodge, unload another full auto shotty volley. That's something you can't do without an instant reload. Just as an example.

No way! I can think of countless times dodge has been a lifesaver. You just need to use it well! The reload is handy to me if I’m playing alone, but I usually take roll for the sick dodges. 😎 Can also think of a million times I’ve died in my warlock rift. It’s all about how you use it or what you like the most.
-
Everyone is going to tell you it’s useless. It’s not. The reload one really is all that great, but it is faster than all reload times excluding external reload buffs like outlaw, reload mods, and exotics. Even though for some reloads it’s only by a few frames. The melee one though is really good. On any class, especially with arcstrider way of the warrior. Plus it gives us more mobility (other than attunement of sky warlocks with Icarus dash which I find dumb as hell). If some one tells you that hunters need a buff, they are wrong (unless they are talking about shadow shot in pvp). Hunters have always been the hardest class to use effectively, but once you do so, they become so strong. There is so much outplay potential with hunters it’s amazing

Honestly the only place the doge comes kinda handy is I’m crucible and you just killed while trying to doge
-
Marksman's dodge is often around the same time spent as a normal reload, but the difference is that you are in motion while doing it, thus making you much less vulnerable than just standing around while reloading. Gambler's Dodge though has a much larger effect as melees recharge far slower than the dodge does and it actually travels further and reorients your hitbox.
-
It's good or tight spots where you can't really spare two seconds to reload (Like the Crucible). I really find it useful when using the Legend of Acrius, which reloads at the pace of a snail.
-
It's actually pretty handy in tight spots, I used it a ton on my first run of the Calus raid last night. It's super handy for when you're low health and need to jump behind something to avoid a bomb or the face-beam laser of death.
-
The hunter is designed to disorient enemies in close spaces, or to get out of a tight spot. Or make it harder to hit you. Use Marksmen Dodge as a fast way of reloading a whole mag in your weapon, like a shotgun. This allows for extreme burst damage. Gamblers dodge is only really useful on the Arcstrider. You live and die by the dodge. This allows you to survive in close encounters much more easily. Tips If in a long corridor (like on midtown) and you’re getting shot at by a scout, dodging into cover will be much faster and safer for you. Dodge is not a insta kill. Use it tactically. Nightstalker can go invisible with it, so if you dodge and disappear, it can make it harder for enemies to track you. And always ensure your dodge works with whatever subclass you use. Arcstrider Warrior: Gambler Wind: Marksmen Gunslinger: Just use Marksmen Nightstalker Pathfinder: Gambler Trapper: Marksmen

Edited by InTheZone: 4/24/2018 1:07:40 PMEvasive maneuver + Op reload time and/or invisibility, very useful in crucible.

Its useful in crucible, you really don't have time to reload when a titan is barreling down on you.
-
Rockets, my friend....rockets.

2 RepliesIts really usefull for dodging stuff. And disengaging from firefights. And...

I’m a Nightstalker Hunter. With the Nightstalker it’s really helpful when trying to run to cover after taking massive damage or revive an ally as there is a perk with the Nightstalker that turns you invisible when you dodge. Sure there is another perk that does the same with the smoke grenade but I prefer the dodge because it keeps you mobile and it’s quick without losing any speed. A friend died by a group of enemies? You run toward them and dodge before they see you. You turn invisible and be able to revive your friend before taking down every enemy in your way. If you add the Nightstalker dodge with the Gemini Jester Exotic Leg Armor, you can be a pain in the butt to other guardians in Crucible too. As the Jester disables enemy radar and comms temporarily, causing them to lose track of where you went while you are invisible, going for the killing blow and dancing on their body.
-
It does break tracking and aim assist, even if you aren’t using nightstalker invis. Plus if you’re squirrelly enough, it can be pretty good to chain roll into melee while using Gemini Jester on the top tree for arcstrider. You do run the risk of being really annoying though lol

Marksmans dodge works great with Merciless, unload the magazine, dodge, mag gets filled with remaining shots and shoots just as fast.
-
Approach the Dodge mechanic from a different angle, then you may see it as more useful when you do.
