My experience at the Destiny Community Summit

It's taken me a little longer to post this than I'd hoped, but it obviously was a crazy week for me and I did not get back home until late yesterday evening and was pretty jet lagged today. There is a lot of speculation and discussion about the Destiny Community Summit and I know my fellow attendees have been posting their thoughts, so here are my impressions of the event. To begin I want to say that I understand how incredibly fortunate I was to be invited to be a part of this. I know all the speculations going in about motivations by who was on the list and even within the group of attendees there was a wide range of opinions on what the event would be. I believed the first and foremost reason for the summit and most important goal would be to try to rebuild and repair the relationship between the community and developers, beyond that we had a lot of discussions before hand of what the community would like addressed/discussed. To that end I wrote up a summary of those discussions to take with me as things I hoped we could cover. As this will go well beyond the forum word limit, I’m going to link the sections below. Thoughts and hopes going in Day 1 experience Day 2 experience My fellow attendees have written and talked about what their experiences were and I know there is still skepticism in the community as to motivations and intent on all sides, but this event was literally everything I hoped it might be and then somehow proceeded to exceed that exponentially. I’m as hopeful for the future of a Bungie game as I’ve ever been. Thank you. Edit: I want to add something else to this as I've been seeing and reading takes on the summit and I want as honest a narrative as possible. I don't agree with any notion that this is the first time Bungie has listened and that their listening to us at the summit is going to potentially "save the game". I feel that discounts things we were shown already being developed as well as not only easily identifiable player impact throughout D1, but everything that we've seen in developer comments, TWaBs, updates and roadmaps since launch. I know we did have very direct impact on some things and were very helpful in thoughts and opinions on a lot of things going forward at the summit, but I don't want to take anything away from the impact of your feedback and the things we already saw them doing and/or know are coming/in development that are directly from them listening to the community at large. What I saw was a company that has heard your voices and feedback on the game and this summit was another step in that process and a chance for more intimate face-to-face discussions on those thoughts and ideas. Thank you again.
The measure of this moment is the measure of the hope it can bring and if it's gonna make a difference, the difference will be easy to see. -Swell
With all due respect Sols, save your breath and fingers. Your credibility around here is less than zero and the only people interested in what you think about the summit are players who are happy with the current state of D2 or players who are hoping against hope that D2 will someday become the game they once enjoyed. Most of us don’t fall into either category. We were here when you went to the pre-beta summit and came back and told us how great D2 was going to be. How it was so much better than D1. How any reservations we had about the changes were unfounded. Then the beta dropped. We all played it. We all hated it. You came on here and told us how stupid we were. That we didn’t understand. That it was “an old build”. Remember how rude you were? It wasn’t an old build, it was exactly what we got in September. You continued to come on here and tell us we’re wrong. I read your tweet from mid March in which you state that D2 is a great game and the best shooter on the market. Your words, not mine. Why should we believe anything you have to say on this topic? I have no idea why Bungie invited someone so incapable of being even the least bit critical of the decisions they are making.

    • Lost Sols. Can you explain why there is so much secrecy around this summit. Like what is it going to hurt to give us some information. I understand you had to sign an NDA but why? Why can't they simply just reveal what they are working on. Is this marketing tactic to get us to be excited, because frankly this kind of thing isn't going to work on me more than once. I was very hyped for Destiny 2 but they managed to let me down pretty much in every way, so why not try to show off some gameplay. The DLC comes out in May why wait this long to give us information? Is it because they are doing everything last minute? I am really kind of not excited as I used to be when seeing these kind of things, and hiding this behind NDA isn't making this look anymore appealing.

      • The non-disclosure agreement (NDA) has nothing to with what Bungie “revealed” to you because as non employees of Bungie they can’t legally make you or even ask you to sign a NDA. No legal binding information was unveiled at this summit, that would or could be used by a competitive company to gain profit. Why, because they know it would be impossible to trust this many people with real information this far out, especially when speaking of the September DLC. No no my friends this is whats called a digital marketing campaign NDA in which third parties are brought in. They discuss ideas about how to promote to, attract and keep customers. That’s what this summit was about and that’s all it was about. Every person that has so far told “thier” story about how the summit went has used the same format and formula. In other words they were giving a template to use. Go ahead look for yourself. They start out the same with something along the lines of “ first let me thank Bungie for giving me the opportunity have been chosen to represent the players at the summit” Then “ here’s what happened on day one” “this is what I asked”, “We were shoen some dooe things that I can’ttalk about bc of the NDA”. “Day 2 was like this” “I spent this much time exclusively with this team from Bungie, they were really interested in what I had to say”. Then the there’s the closing thought and the sales pitch “My honest opinion is May’s DLC isn’t that great but is better than Osiris. Bungie is going in the right direction and come September Destiny 2 will finally be the game we had hoped for all along” I mean am I right??

        • Lol Crickets from Bungie until it's time to sell content. You didn't tell them anything that hasn't already been said. You didn't tell them anything that couldn't have been done by email. A flight and a hotel stay and more we are listening in person is all it takes to have you create hype for them. Wined and dined people so you would sing their praises and hopefully make them relevant to sell their DLC. A few flights and hotel stay is just a marketing expense, nothing more.

          • I can see having a NDA on content we haven't seen yet. I can not understand why there is a NDA on design decisions for content we already have. Is it driving anyone else nuts that they would talk to the summit attendees about the casualification of Destiny and why they did but theyre not allowed to talk with the rest of the world about. Why on Earth would they not be able to come back from the summit and talk about stuff like that?

                • According to Datto, Bungie has a new feature they unveiled and it go shit on.... Which will now be heavily changed according to the summit feedback. Due to a nondisclosure agreement, we will never know what that entailed. How nice. Bungie catering to a hand selected group of YouTubeers and steamers that do not speak for the rest of us. Catering to you is how we got here in tje first place. Anyone remember the definition of insanity?

I would post guide videos here occasionally and the amount of trolling and hate that I see from trying to teach people new things is unbearable. Anyways good write up as usual. Can’t wait for September to roll around so we can see all the changes that are coming.

Not someone who is just going to argue and give shit feedback. Thanks for your input and Hopefully this game does improve. Not that it's not fun now, but I would love to see the changes coming up in the DLC and the Expansion later in the summer time.

I am very happy with the sheer number of topics that were covered and discussed. Glad you had a chance to go and bring the communities (well, some of the communities) concerns to the source.

                                • The fact that there even is a NDA/information embargo, just shows everyone how much of a PR stunt this actually was to build the hype train. "Ouu ouu we're so excited but we can't tell you why! ;)" The players deserve better from Bungie. Especially those still playing the game. Every one should have access to the information that was discussed during the summit. We need a list of what was asked and what answers were given and what they now plan on doing to fix the game. For the Warmind DLC and the next expansion, sure. You can keep it NDA. But when addressing community feedback and asking for fundamental fixes for the game that Destiny 1 had over 2? That should NEVER be under NDA. It's a slap to your customers face. Bungie has no more integrity. What a farce of a company it has become.

                                  • Sorry Did you say you a forum user went to the summit? Oh you did? I don’t care. Datto summed it up easily and he sounded let down. All the big changes coming a year after release clap clap it’s like I’ve gone back to destiny 1 except this time it’s even far worse. The summit was their PR stunt for dlc 2&3 they knew that they’d give out dlc 2 gameplay to channels seeing as they’d hype it up to be huge whilst saying dlc 3 is gonna be the time to return... yeah except let me make this clear to any “hyper” Bungie boy What’s gonna happen between dlc 2 and dlc 3? Are we going to have another 3-4 months of “nothing” cause I’m tired of that. Give me a reason to play this damn game right? Well truth be told Bungie is uncreative. Look at their ranking names for season 3. Mythic legend that stuff Hmm mythic sounds familiar oh yeah halo right? What about Legend? It was on the back of the case for the original destiny... those ranks aren’t special they don’t mean anything. Back in the past they did because they were words no game studio wanted to use. Now legend mythic and etc are so popular. Oh look mars 2.0 wow Oh look suros returns Oh look armor that looks like wrath of the machine armor from d1. Oh look 6v6 iron banner Mayhem rumble yeah it’s all coming back because we the “better PvP players” knew what was needed in d2 from the start. Yet naw they just didn’t care then until stuff went downhill and then they’re like ok ok ok We’re listening I bet it sucks to be the guy who has to tell Activision destiny 2 in the first half year underperformed and did not meet expectations. Oh well it’s his fault not mine cause if he would’ve thought how can we make the game better within 2 months instead of 6 maybe players would’ve stayed. Hush Mr fruit Datto Kruzer Planet destiny Just some big channels that don’t really “fully engage in destiny” content... yeah but in d1 they were uploading destiny basically daily. Now competitive is going to be ruined because the playerbase is low and most people will be cheating because ranks matter so damn much. Might as well enable a cheat menu for everyone at this point because who cares anymore right. This is destiny it never was meant to be a competitive type game. It’s laid back fun and just overall action filled. I don’t need to watch 4 dudes running hammers using a full auto weapon cheat that wins them every trials game nah I need to watch a team of 6 with several subclasses using amazing weapons and slaying the other team. I hope the summit was worth it because to me as a fan as someone with over 3400 hours in d1 I really see no good in building up hype... if dlc 3 isn’t as good as we are being told Bungie as a studio will be completely over. They’ll be packing up bags clearing out offices and locking the studio up and getting much less demanding jobs... I don’t want that but hey Clearly they do because they have yet to say we’re sorry this game has been all over the place this past 6 months I want an apology not a hey we will try to improve it only to fail and let you down even more.

                                    • I see a lot of people here presuming to know what’s going on, yet lacking any understanding of the history behind all of this. I hope you don’t mind me dropping this here. Respect. Cliff Notes History: Lost Sols goes back to the beginning, and subsequently, was a forum voice on one side of The Great Schism. And that’s the roots of all of this. He was among the first of us to take Bungie to task here. He - and Malphisto - started a movement of sorts in the forums. Our motivation was to hold Bungie accountable for the original issues: no optional matchmaking in PvE, lies about playable area, potato-tech connections, to name a few. (DeeJ tended to respond to us with condescending, snarky, douchbaggery, which threw SO much gas on our fire!) TTK dropped, and the forum was divided forevermore. Fast forward... Sols started a non-monetary Destiny podcast, that I was proud to be a part of. Still am. It was so awesome hearing the actual voices behind the gamertags of our Community. We’d record on Sunday evening, then Sols would spend hours editing the recordings before going to a real life job on next-to-no sleep. He believed in what we were doing. He cares deeply about this franchise, and has worked hard to put himself in a position to affect the game’s direction. I don’t fault him one bit for that. I have no doubt that he knows that the voice Bungie has given him comes with a lot of responsibility, and will be nearly totally thankless around here. And, while I have frequently disagreed with Sols on issues related to blaming the Community for the state of the game and franchise, many of his suggestions for improving the game are excellent. I hope he DID have Bungie’s ear at the Summit. If Bungie implements some of his ideas, and listens when he says “bad idea,” the game will greatly improve for remaining players; of which, I am not one. He’s pissed off a lot of people; I get that. Not telling anyone who they should like, nor justifying shitty things that he may have said to you. I can guarantee you that Lost Sols has received orders of magnitude more hate than any of us here. Just a bit of my experience with someone many of us here presume to know.
