D2 raids: if you die the whole group dies with you = collective punishment
D1 raids: can die doing something for the team and the team can continue on without you depending on individual roles and still finish the encounter = altruism/hero moments.

So they went backwards basically

further to that : D2 raids both require cooperation and comms, and encourage elitist and superior attitudes and intolerance to less than perfect player performance. this is because one death can and does wipe the whole party. there is no room for mistakes or learning or errors. so nobody wants to play with a new player if they want to complete the raid. lots of pressure. thus D2 raid provides the mechanism and imperative for griefing others, and forces them to communicate so making it possible to carry out said griefing. this also deters some from even wanting to try raids. D1: this attitude will be different because its not a binary, one mistake and its over situation. players will be more likely to want to work together and help each other succeed, since dying wont result in a wipe necessarily, meaning there is more tolerance of mistakes. and its fun.
