Bothered me before getting 1 core. But game has no loot anyway. So I changed mindset to think it always give you 1 core regardless. Now I 40 cores but no gun or armor I want to masterwork anyway.

50 cores here. Never used any nor have plans too. The economy is screwed up. You get one but it takes 10 to create. Besides I could care less about creating more orbs which is the biggest advantage I see to masterwork weapons. When it comes to the armor I couldn't care less.
