My solution to the static weapon problem

I know my idea is totally a stretch goal but I just haven’t heard it anywhere and want to make sure it is put out there. My solution to the random rolls problem: There has been a continuous debate about whether Bungie should bring back random rolls or keep the current static roll system. I’ve kept up with a lot of big names in the community and haven’t heard anyone else suggest this. I was thinking about how we could have both. In Warframe, the pvp is not popular but it is balanced entirely separately. When changing your loadout on the ps4 you press the right thumb stick to select either your pvp or pve loadout. From there you can select weapons and mod those weapons with highly impactful mods. There are mods that are specific to either pvp or pve. So in D2 we could add a page to the loadout screen that would have, in this case, your random roll loadout in addition to the current static roll loadout. Obviously the same system could also be used for armor but weapons would have a much larger impact on the game. Random roll and static rolls could be connected so that acquiring a weapon with any roll would also unlock its static roll. Then we could use the same playlists we have but competitive would be ranked and use static rolls. Whereas in quick play we would have a totally connection based matchmaking and people can use the fun random rolls that I know I miss so much from D1. This system would go hand in hand with the return of private, or maybe even custom, matches as it maintains the “competitive” environment Bungie has seen to give us while at the same giving the players who enjoyed hunting down the gems like the old god roll eyasluna exactly what they are wanting too. I would think pve would primarily be random roll oriented but if they continue to build on the competitive pve platform they started with the changes and upcoming changes to prestige activities a modifier they could use to level the field could be to require use of static rolls.

  • The problem isn't random vs static rolls. The problem is a shallow loot pool and perk pool that doesn't allow for any end-game power-progression like their was in D1. IOW. Nameless Midnight is the best PVE scout rifle in the game. Right now, there is LITERALLY no way to make a better scout rifle than NM. So once you have it......you're basically done. There may be weapons in the game that better suit your play style....but there aren't any that are going to objectively outperform NM and none that will out-DPS it. ...and without that possibility, you essentially have not end game for PVE. Random rolls or static rolls not withstanding.
