Are Guardians Really The Good Guys?

Just so I don't have people saying that this is not a new theory. I realize that I am not the first to come up with this theory nor will I be the last. Sure we fight the solar system killing "space rhinos" (Thank you Cayde for such an accurate description) and try our best to protect our citizens. But are we good? We think so, but why would we say otherwise? Why do we trust the Traveler? How do we know it is not evil? ( Some say the Traveler itself caused the Collapse and the destruction of the Fallen home world) The two questionable acts I have noticed: The liberation of Titan from the Hive. Sure it was ours but it is their home now. WE ARE STEALING THEIR HOME! Sure they're hive minds but does that make them lesser than us? And another thing that has to do with homes, the Fallen have lost their home. We don't offer them sanctuary among us, no we murder them. We label them as alien pests instead of a people that has been wandering endlessly since the destruction of their home. Now I realize this is really not well thought out, but I hope it raises suspicions of the Traveler's true intent.

  • No, we are the bad guys. We are henchmen for Spider. We do whatever Zavala tells us to do, while he hides in the tower. We murder each other every chance we get. We steal from each other and shoot blind and helpless Guardians in the back. This is all done in a mindless quest for ever more power. We are not the good guys.

  • Let's see, we got the fallen who are struggling to survive and just want their God back. Hive, a weak race in the past but due to making contact with the darkness forever bound to suffer in hunger. Vex, time killing robots who everybody hates. Cabal, warrior race who live to conquer (but the Emperor seems like a cool dude). Guardians are mostly just playing defense when you think about it with each dlc, never us in the attack first. We are a little in the middle, Guardians aren't pure snowflakes nor is man.

  • In four years of playing Destiny, I have never once seen a Cabal, Fallen, Vex, or Hive run over to their downed teammates... and tea-bag them. Yes, we're the bad guys.

    • <To be fair, the Fallen attacked us. However, I think both sides should be more open to peace, especially since the Fallen are just trying to survive. The Hive aren't Hive-minded. They're genocidal space crabs that want your soul and Light. Not to mention they torture the shit out of anyone they get their hands on. We're not good, but we're not the bad guy.>

      • The hive continually come from some where else. Neither Earth’s moon or Titan is the Hive’s home. Just merely bases to them. For they are an end all to be all race. The Fallen have started attacking us when they first arrived. They altered themselves with Siva to get an upper hand. They have no intentions to coexist with us. They want that which isn’t theirs. They want your home world. So according to you (the OP), we should just let the other races kill us. All because they decided to travel here and take what they want. Since we were here first and we want to live, so we fight back. That makes us evil ?

      • We’re definitely the bad guys. Think about the Black Garden Grimoire card. It states,
At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light. The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life. The Traveler is life, I said. You are a creature of Darkness. You seek to deceive me. But I looked behind me, down the long slope where the blossoms tumbled in the warm wind and the great trees wept sap like blood or wine, and I felt doubt. When my Ghost raised me from the sea there was a thorn-cut in my left hand and it has not healed since.
Also, take note of the lore for the Hunter Exotic, Graviton Forfeit:
Just sit down and think about what you're doing. A big white ball rebuilt you from nothing. Guided your civilization. Transformed you. Didn't tell you why, did it? Doubt it mentioned the omnipotent space anathema that's coming to kill you and your dog and your whole soccer club, either, but what's a little xenocide between friends? Maybe you don't care. A gun never stops and wonders if things are more complicated. It just shoots. It's also possible that I'm just trying to get inside your head. You're a hero with a cape and a gun and a bike. You're gonna live forever. Who's got time for doubt? Fight the "Darkness"! Yeah! You know what I'd call "dark," in the sense of "grim," in the sense of "cosmically upsetting"? A universe full of weaponized puppets, enacting a genocidal war against the servants of a rival god. Is this making you uncomfortable? I'm sorry. I'll be more evil. Boo. Grrr.
Hey, that Hunter helmet probably has more common sense than everyone at the tower. This next one comes from the Lore of The Jade Rabbit, an exotic auto rifle.
Do you ever wonder who you were before you were resurrected? Do you experience debilitating anxiety when you think about the cold, crushing fist of death? Has the desire to lie facedown on the floor for hours at a time been holding YOU back? From the people that brought you Lunal comes prescription-strength Immortalia: a revolutionary new combat elixir shown to relieve the crippling existential crises of your second life. Immortalia can reduce symptoms of listlessness, cynicism, and social anxiety. Side effects may include dancing, salty behavior, and acts of group heroism. Do not take Immortalia while operating all-terrain thrust bikes.
This suggests that A) Guardians don’t feel that they have any meaning in life, which shows that, if they WERE good guys, they would at least feel like they were doing something good and therefore felt meaning. This also suggests that the authorities or even the Traveler created a medicine to stop the Guardians from feeling that they are meaningless, which would help them “protect the city”, AKA slaughter all of the other alien races. Now, I would also like to point out that in D1, the objectives for your Guardian were very...un-heroic sounding. Ex: “DECIMATE THE HIVE”, “SLAUGHTER THE FALLEN”, “ANNIHILATE THE VEX”, or the simple, “KILL THEM ALL.” Not only THAT, but if you walk around the Tower and visit Bartholomew the Leviathan Vendor, you can hear him say VERY interesting things, like...
The Traveler is unsafe!
Finally, if you hung around the Speaker suspiciously like I did in D1, you might hear him say something like:
They are vulnerable—good.
And if you hang out at the Tower in D2, you can hear from the civilians that even though the Traveler is awake and the SHOULD feel secure and safe...the feel very uneasy and scared. Even your Ghost express uncertainty in one scannable at the Tower, when he says,
...but the Traveler’s awake now! Things should be better!...Right?
Well, that’s that for now. I hope I’ve convinced you enough.

        • They shot first, during the Collapse, and haven’t stopped shooting at us since. They were unprovoked and Golden Age humanity wasn’t up to any particularly nefarious stuff. We’re the good guys, by merit of the fact everyone else is irredeemably evil.

          • Take into consideration the possibility that the Traveler DID cause the Collapse, but not with malicious intent. The Darkness followed it across space to get to Sol (our solar system), but the Traveler cannot help that. Granted, it would have fled Earth and moved on (just as it did with the Fallen) had Rasputin not crippled it in order to force it to aid humanity and sacrifice itself. All in all I’d say we aren’t evil, we’re just fighting to protect humanity regardless of whether or not the Traveler is evil. Then again that’s all folklore now, so believe what you will.

            • In that Nessus adventure where the vex were capturing the fallen the vex told the fallen they could kill each other and the last one standing would be set free, they didn’t fire a shot. Yet we kill each other in the crucible. I try to make peace with them in the European dead zone but they disagree because us gaurdians keep killing them every time we see them.

But then you consider all of the atrocities that the Fallen and The Cabal and the Hive did to captured guardians(examples being Praedyth, Uldren Sov, and Eriana-3)

                  • Of course we're the good guys. We did not invade another species home system after they suffered an apocalyptic attack the nearly wiped them out, lay claim to their world whose inhabitants were killed not abandoned, steal their tech, try on multiple occasions to wipe them out while they are weakened and then turn around a bitch about them fighting back and winning. Also what has the traveler done to make it evil, you do realize that the traveler is a living being not a machine, it has no obligation to protect or sacrifice itself for anyone. It also does not belong to anyone so the fallen has not claim over it, it chose to come to earth, it chose to uplift humanity and it chose to stay an sacrifice itself to save us, it dis not have to do any of that, but it did dispite being afraid. And don't bother with the darkness thing, the darkness and hive don't chase the traveler exclusively, the go after all life, they would have found us anyway, the only thing is that we were more advanced than we would have been if the traveler didn't come and that the traveler was there to save us. In short these filthy xeno invaders and bleeding hearts can whine about injustice as much as they want, but I will not stop my genocide until they are extinct or leave my home, mercy is not on the table nor is forgiveness.

                    • I noticed when I head shot fallen sometimes you can see a fallen shaped light escape. This made me think maybe they were actually more like us than originally thought, and the traveler left them. Had the traveler not gone dormant (thanks to Rasputin?) we may have ended up just like them. I don’t particularly like having to kill them. I feel bad for them, but they won’t stop shooting at me so...

                      • Two things: The hive attacked us, killed thousands of gaurdians, and for all we know caused the collapse. So as far as I'm concerned, they do not deserve a home in our system. The fallen part I initially agreed with; we should have let them in. But consider the circumstances. We had just had our entire way of life destroyed. Then this strange species approaches us. It isn't unreasonable the this would lead us to a shoot-on-sight mentality. And not only this, but when they were denied they became hostile. They attacked us, killing civilians and even children. While I would like to see an alliance with the fallen, I think right now we are far from it.

                      • I always wondered this. Did the Fallen believe they were the heroes too? What kind of story could we have from their perspective? Chasing the lost machine across the galaxy, fighting evil who now use the machine for their own nefarious deeds.

                          1. Who and what the Traveller is, is its own debate. Whether or not it is Good....or just represents a force of Nature is still a matter for debate as well. But dont' confuse STARTING a fight with FINISHING one. 2. If someone rolls up on you, hits you in the mouth and continues to punch and kick you....YOU'RE IN A FIGHT. You may not have started it. You may not have wanted it...but you've got one. At that point you have two choices. Fight back, and defend yourself and the things you care about. Or accept the beatdown, and risk having everything you care about destroyed or taken away. Humanity didn't START any of these fights. Guardians didn't START any of these fights. Humanity just REFUSED to accept the beatdown, and we CHOSE to fight back. A. If you've read The Book Of Sorrows from Destiny 1, then you know that there is NO hope of any peaceful coexistence with The Hive. They sold their souls to the Worm Gods for power. The price is that they must continue to slaughter all that they encounter to FEED that worm larvae each one carries with it it...and that you can hear its dying scream when a Hive dies to a headshot in D2...OR THAT WORM WILL CONSUME THEM. Their entire existence is Kill other to feed it....or have it kill them. So all that is going on Titan and Io is just the Hive/Taken regrouping for the next attack on us and the Traveller...and to expect anything else is to simply get caught with our pants down like we were with the Red Legion. Which---if Savathun (Oryx's extremely dangerous little sister) is what comes through leading that attack---we might not survive failing to be ready. B. The Queen of the Reef TRIED to peacefully co-exist with the Fallen as one of their Kells (cheiftans), But the House of Wolves refused to accept her...and the moment Skolas came along, they went right back to killing humans. They prefer (for now) to live like one part horde of locust...and one part roving barbarians. C. There is also no hope of peaceful co-existence with The Vex. Like the Hive, their goal is our total annihilation...and the reshaping of this entire UNIVERSE to suit themselves. That was the "Dark Future" we fougth against in Curse of Osiris. A Universe where nothing exists but the Vex and only the Vex. D. There is the possibility of peace with the Cabal. There is a clear division in philosophy between the Cabal as led by Dominus Ghaul....and the Cabal as led by Emperor Calus. Calus is clearly no the power-hungry, stary system destroying conquerer that Ghaul was.....but what he actually IS...once again is a matter of debate. So, like the Fallen, there can be no peace until the Cabal solve their own internal schisms Until then...."Y'all down here". Which means Guardians are FINISHING fights that others chose to start with Humanity, because (as Dead Orbit and Osiris understood) because we threw in with The Traveller...and inheritied its enemies, and drew the attention of those who coveted its power.

                              • The original story had the Traveller as a puppet master rather than a saviour. It's still a possibility (slim) that story could be resurrected at some point. I think they'll play safe though. Even so, within the story we ended up with 'good' is still defined by perspective. The Deep/Darkness ethos is that pursuit of the final shape is good. Oryx believes he's doing the right thing. Those standing in the way by not also pursuing final shape are bad (to them).
