Bungie can now retcon or hand wave the original material away. There goes what made D1 interesting.

Thoughts?

Perhaps his heart is in the right place, and he can only do so much, but can Bungie pull through? Will the higher ups call more bad shots? MTX got abused. How will the writing and lore be treated?
Edit 2: Stohl apologizes but doesn’t clarify. More vagueness. Also, despite all the likes, Bungie mods have buried this post to hide the flack they’re getting. Going to repost this.

Another stupid mistake change

Folklore is based on history. So what is being said in the lore could be true, but some parts might be a little bit more dramatic then what has actually happened.

1 ReplySo, even they think D1 story was stupid.

3 RepliesEdited by TotalDramaGamer: 1/28/2018 8:46:28 PMI think people are using the word 'canon' a little too strictly. Folklore can be canon. For instance, a belief carried by multiple people throughout a story that can be rooted throughout the experience could be seen as folklore canon. It's canon because, in fact, it is present in the game where you meet people that believe it to be true (and it affects societies or personal actions) whereas it might be revealed to not be true way later down the line. Then the canon becomes, 'well, people believed this and this happened due to that...' and you can show that. It's not 'not canon' because it was there. It ends up becoming folklore, but it's not 'no longer there' in the game or stories history. I see canon as either being part of the story or not party of the story. If a myth or legend is part of the story, right or wrong, then it was canon. Canon is not absolute truth, in my opinion, because many great stories are driven by lies and deception (even if it is directed at the players themselves). Note, that this is not the same concept as simply 'throwing stuff away'. For instance, the removal of the Stranger is still not 'canon folklore' because we know, in fact, she existed and has helped us. Just saying 'she's gone' does not make here folklore, it just makes her a dead story. -- However... since several of the cards are not alluded to in any of the games at all it's easy to say there really is 'just folklore' because it has no impact on the game or the world around it. In fact, it's not even seen unless you go hunt for it yourself. You also have to realize that the restrictions on 'canon and not canon' do not directly relate to how good the story is or becomes. For instance, major questions could be solved with the most dissatisfying of answers. It's not an argument of canon or not canon, you're at the mercy of the story writer. If you want a recent example, Osiris was made up to be this lethal, quick thinking, intelligent, but pretty dangerous (if not a tad out of wack) man who sparked a cult that pretty infamous for getting people killed and he denounced the very foundation of the City's leadership (basically, spat in the king's face, would be a almost equal example). He does not sound like a mild mannered, kind, and open minded old man... which is what we got. The answer, ultimately, was by his ghost who said 'he changed' and that was that. -- But like I said, if Bungie says 'it's folklore' and 'not canon' I take that as 'never happened, just a myth' which, still, needs to have great care of use because we know that several things have, in fact, happened. They need to not confuse that with just throwing away interesting story arcs that we know have some truth to them.

5 RepliesThis is a very solid idea for the story of Destiny. And it makes sense. Who was around to see how Oryx few up and tell about it? Who can confirm anything that Praedyth has said or left behind other than Praedyth. How do we know the Vex aren't changing history and events that occurred as we speak? It frees up the writing and makes sense within the universe, I say good call. It's just like what Disney did with Star Wars and it honestly makes sense.

Edited by Burger In Law: 1/28/2018 10:20:00 PMGrimoire is still cannon is just opiniated and in the perspective of people most of the time. Christopher Barrett explained it on Twitter. https://twitter.com/cgbarrett/status/957714872560599040

I don't see why this is a problem. I did the exact same thing with their games and just waved my hand and both of them were off my console.

4 RepliesI'm sure you've seen the post on the forums praising Byf for his video on how to better incorporate the grimoire going forward. Or Byf's words in an interview in which he said the lore community (his description) is more or less unaffected by the changes introduced in D2 regarding lore and plot. Its now official: no aspect of D1 has been left untouched if for no other reason than to "improve" (read retcon) D1. This franchise cannot claim to have a lore component when every few years, on a whim some story writers decide what's canon and what's not. And why, why for the love of God are we talking about comic books here? The issue never was that the grimoire was bad--it was really good. The issue was that it was not in the game. The comic book idea is the same : it's a platform not in the game.

Edited by 10mm Socket (Timelost): 1/28/2018 10:04:45 PMI imagine Bungie studios as being about 900 people, all on 2 busses trying to ride this out while the engine is exploding in both of them. One wants to save the game, and one wants to make their own version of Destiny.
-
2 RepliesThis was inevitable. They had nearly gone a week without a major community catastrophe. I can picture Luke at the bungle boardroom.....”right TWAB went down a bit well, Iron Disappointment is NEXT week and Crimson Crate is ages away. What have you done THIS week to disenfranchise the last half mil?.....”We could crush lore, that’ll hurt their memories lots AND we can’t fix it later”.....”GREAT....do it, I want us down to 200k PVE by DLC2” SMFH.......

8 RepliesEdited by EtterWolf15: 1/28/2018 10:03:32 PMI have being playing defense for Bungie for sometime now. I won't even try to defend this. If there was any indication in the grimoire that some of the stories were not entirely true, then maybe this would make sense. However, for three years all of the grimoire was treated as 100% canon as the lore of the universe. To be told that all of your favorite parts of Destiny's story may or may not have actually happened, that feels like crap. As though I may have wasted 3 years getting into this lore. But I have a question: who was the person who made the tweet? Was this person on the actual narrative team? Edit: Just googled it. Oh. Oh shit. Oh dear. That was narrative DIRECTOR. God damn it.

I may not be a fan of D2, but even a heavy critic like me enjoyed reading the grimoire from time to time. -blam!-ing stupid movie bungie

4 RepliesCan we just have another game studio take over at this point?

11 Replies'grimoire is considered folklore, even to the inhabitants of the universe: true as far as they & we know!' If it was considered folklore maybe they should have told us that in D1. Might have stopped people getting so invested in the universe and the goings-on of the characters within them. I'm thinking either the writers haven't even looked through the grimoire or they're playing ignorance so they don't have to put the effort in. Any writer could see the potential. I'd love to see the likes of Brandon Sanderson and Dan Abnett give their take on the universe. That won't ever happen though because good story-telling takes time. Time that Bungie apparently doesn't have. Throwing it away and essentially making it non-cannon just shows such a lack of respect for Staten and those that helped build the universe.

1 ReplyEdited by DeathPony07: 1/28/2018 8:08:00 PMI don't think anyone will buy D3. I think Bungie should sell the Destiny rights to a studio that isn't completely incompetent. So she chose to put the "true" story into a web comic, instead of the actual game? What an absolute genius and brilliant writer. Is this the same person in charge of the Osiris DLC narrative? No wonder it sucked. A child could wrote a better story.

2 RepliesSo I miss my D1 experience. If for some reason, a new player started D1, ....where would they see what Grimoire cards they have acquired? I can’t see mine anymore.....maybe I just don’t know where to look since my Destiny “companion” app is worthless for that type of info nowadays..... Imagine a new player (of D1) trying to find that stuff? Oh.....D2 is out...who cares about D1? I’ve seen a lot of people playing it.....
