This is gonna sound bad, but...maybe race should matter.

Okay okay just let me explain. So the way the game is set up, races are basically identical. You have some different graphics, different facial animations, but it doesn’t affect the game at all. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could get some missions or dialogue specific to our characters’ races? I mean, Awoken supposedly have this strange connection to mysterious powers beyond the Light. Meanwhile, Exos apparently have to reset their brains, or wipe their memories or whatever, every once in a while. And they dream about the Deep Stone Crypt. That is INTERESTING stuff. Humans...well, they’re boring. But there WAS all that talk of the Traveler changing human intelligence and lifespan during the Golden Age...so maybe do something with that? Or it could focus on the physiological differences caused by the Light. Like, our Guardian agrees to have some tests run on them by a researcher. Standard physical endurance and mental performance tests, maybe throw in some MRIs and cell-analysis-via-microscope. On a cellular level, what does the Light do to stop biological senescence (aging)? Is unlimited sprinting just a gameplay thing, or do Guardians actually experience boundless stamina? Why doesn’t it keep them from having to sleep (according to Felwinter’s Grimoire card, anyway)? Most of all, what is happening when a Guardian is revived? It would be so cool to dig into the actual process behind that. What are the cells (or whatever) doing? What would happen if you chopped a Guardian’s arm off, then reattached it? What if you severed the nerves, but kept the limb hooked up to the circulatory system? How does the Light differentiate between “damage” and just living? How are memories preserved during the regeneration process? Do Guardians experience anything during their time spent “dead”? Bungie has this fantastic opportunity to explore the universe they’re building. Sadly, they probably won’t ever go into such detail. They seem more interested in just...maximizing profit. I think not enough people care about the lore for this stuff to ever get developed. It seems downright criminal to create such beautiful worlds, but never give them any depth. I mean, the concepts of “Light” and “Darkness” are baby-simple, but the Grimoire has some good stuff in it, too. It really sucks that Bungie not only failed to find a way to integrate lore with gameplay (yeah, a paragraph of text on certain equipment is not “integrated”), but actually took a step BACKWARDS, giving even less lore than the first time around. Bungie, you really fûcked up this project of yours. You shoulda gone to Bethesda instead of Activision. Bethesda knows how to build worlds. Edit: I’m not saying that players should be given race-specific abilities or perks. I’m purely talking about story and lore, here. Racial abilities are a possibility, but they just aren’t what I’m discussing.
