As someone who has never played Zelda: BotW, is it worth giving it a shot. I'm a big fan of open world games and am looking for new Switch games (already got Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart). Heard good things about it, but is it fairly simple to get in to or do I need to have a hood understanding about the Zelda games?
Edit: Cheers everyone. I bought it and am really enjoying it so far.

Edited by MightyJonE: 1/27/2018 10:57:49 PMWell, it depends. I’d say maybe. I’m a big Zelda fan but BOTW is the first Zelda I lost interest in after several hours and never finished. Maybe I’m just tired of games that drop you in a big open world and leave you to it. Felt directionless, left me cold

11 RepliesIt’s the only reason the switch was successful.

10 RepliesIt's a great game, but not 10/10. Id give it a solid 9. It's fun to explore, but it was rarely challenging for me. You can get for PC for free if you have one with an AMD or Nvidia graphics card though.

Its a fantastic game.... but its not a good Zelda game. I know some people will disagree with me... thats fine but honestly BotW to me screws up royally in what makes Zelda... well Zelda. The major dungeons are bland with no tool upgrades at all in the game besides passive buffs to your character. The puzzles are good but the boss fights are some of the worst in the series besides Gannon and too easy to break if you are decent at parrying or dodging.

Only if you’ve already payed the Witcher 3.

If you have a switch or a WiiU and you haven't bought BOTW.... you're doing it wrong.

1 ReplyEvery Zelda title is standalone. I never played a Zelda game before BOTW, and got into it with no problem.

It's my favorite game of all time now. Obviously not everyone will feel as strongly about it as me. But a 97 on Metacritic, game of the year awards, a good word of mouth and over 6 million copies sold doesn't lie. It's a legendary game. I also very very highly recommend Splatoon 2! It's great. And as a tip for playing this Zelda. Take your time. I mean it. Enjoy every bit. Explore every little area. Do every quest and shrine you come across. Get the most out of your experience because the game doesn't force you to do much.

8 RepliesEdited by Scoose_McGoose: 1/25/2018 1:25:09 PMNo reason not to. I have 115 hours in it, and I only have 25% of the content completed. The story is pretty much non existent, and I'm still confused about a lot of things they didn't include, regarding lore and history. Hopefully there will be a sequel... Easy to get into. Some of the shrines eat up a good 30-45 minutes of my time, despite being designed to be bite sized dungeons. They range from combat trials, to puzzles, obstacle courses. There are a few environmental puzzles, where the work is done outside of the shrine, and once you get in, the reward is right there. The open word is fantastic. It may be small compared to other games, when you're standing on top of a mountain. But it feels massive when you get your feet on the ground and start exploring. You can teleport, use a horse, glide or just walk. Very fun to poke around, and get distracted from what you're doing. If you get it, avoid the internet and take your time to discover what the game has in store for you.

If you own a Switch, you need BOTW. Just like if you have a set of lungs, you need oxygen. They go hand in hand.

Don't have a switch myself but Breath Of The Wild is the only reason I haven't spent a dime in weeks ,Slowely saving up to grab a switch and a copy ,If you can buy it I can't stess it enough ,You need to play this game

I don’t even have a Switch and I would get BOTW

Yea dude I didn't think there were people on the planet with Switch's that didn't have Zelda. Gotta pick that one up man. And if you've never played a Zelda before I gotta recommend you play Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask if you ever get the chance.
-
Yes, buy it. It's just like Skyrim but with intricate puzzles.
-
I love zelda but I wouldn’t classify it as a zelda game, it has a really new take on the series. It was hard for me to get into it but it’s still a game you should play.

1 ReplyThe refreshing thing about BotW is how it doesn’t hold your hand. You get thrown into the world and by the time you get to your first scenic view of the world, you’re not getting prompts about what buttons do. “Tutorials” are cleverly built into gameplay in the initial zone. But after that, there is nothing that tells you how to play. You choose what to do and when to do it. I’ve sunk hours into the game and I’m only halfway or so through the main story, because I got sidetracked with side missions and heart hunting. It’s a beautiful game, too. It may not have photorealistic graphics but it’s artistically breathtaking. And it has an extremely large amount of polish. When it rains you can see water slide down surfaces, and they become too slippery to climb. The moon has different cycles. It’s not a perfect game like some people claim; it suffers from some minor issues like a bit of repetitiveness. But it’s a masterpiece, and easily deserving of its 2017 goty award.

Nope. BotW is pretty open, and the map is huge. A good first part, but if another similar game is in the works they need to fill the world up a bit more. This is my favorite game to have come out since Skyrim or Borderlands 2, that complaint aside. A welcome breath of fresh air to the franchise.
-
Yeah you should definitely get it. You don't have to be familiar to previous Zelda games to play BotW.
-
The real question is why wouldn't you buy it?
-
3 RepliesBuy it. Zelda games are amazing. Even the ones for Nintendo 3ds.

Edited by Pyrus: 1/25/2018 2:04:08 PMBotW's a 7/10 for me, but I do recommend it for anyone who enjoys open world games. Not the best Zelda IMO, but still a lot of fun to play.

Edited by shell: 1/25/2018 1:16:59 PMI feel it's pretty welcoming for a new player. The puzzles are usually simple outside of some of the dungeons and the DLC shrines. That's coming from a new player to the series. The combat is fun and challenging, but the lock-on a little unreliable. Armor is straight up overpowered, so I'd suggest not upgrading any set past level 2 unless you want the strongest enemies to hit like a wet sponge.
