Storytelling too childish and toned down for a game based around war and fighting.
The lore in Destiny is amazing, the grimoire is a testament to how great it can be. Even in D1, Rise of Iron/Oryx storylines were well-crafted and unique.
Now in D2 for some reason, the story seems like it's made for a 9 year old. The constant odd and cringy humor, pointless gag phrases (maybe you mean running gags), and non static storylines are kind of glaring.
Curse of Osiris for instance had the chance to be the epic tale of a guardian who was exiled; however, it ended up being a glorified reunion between him and Ikora. The story didn't use the infinite forest to take us into simulated wars or a Vault of Glass simulation, and Osiris was barely active/impactful for how huge he is in the lore.
I don't even have to speak on the awkward and out of place dialogue on the Taeko strike with such bad writing like, "I don't do waiting", "No, I'm here to save you", "This is real stuff". It seems the story overall is just very shallow and kid friendly, I would like for it to return to its dark and serious roots.

I completely agree, but this doesn’t belong in lore. Move it to feedback or something. On a side note, my clan and I joke about a line delivered by Ghost during Inverted Spire which is just dumb “Uhh, hey... what’s happening to the floor?!” Ghost sounded like the kid from The Polar Express in the line’s delivery, aside from the line having nothing to do with story

I agree, Osiris was kinda disappointing for me. He was my selling point. Hopefully with this next DLC, it will start to pick up. I’m most excited about the triangles more than anything, though.

Edited by TortillaTheHun13: 1/18/2018 7:46:07 PMAn M-rated destiny would be a lot better in my opinion. The game is too Disney and not serious enough like it is in the grimoire. I'm also tired of the current ghosts voice. My gaurdians looks like a bitch with my pre-teen ghost talking for me. Many People said Nolan North sounded disinterested and unenthusiastic but it was just the character he was trying to do. Our ghosts are super old supercomputers/necromancers that have the knowledge of the traveler that has drifted through space building civilization after civilization for an immeassurable amount of time. So I would imagine they would have an "Old and wise"/ "been there done that" attitude.

1 ReplyMy biggest issue is the fact that ghost literally speaks for my guardian. And he says the worst jokes and is never serious for 95% Of this game. Really pisses me off. The tone shift from D1 to D2 was huge and it was for the worst. D1 has its jokey moments but to me had that feeling of seriousness that I don’t find in D2 except in the first two missions.

2 Replies>ghaul says we're nothing without our light >loses light >gets it back 5 minutes later >finds vanguard pals >stops almighty >kills ghaul and proves the point that WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT OUR LIGHT. Just bad story telling. "OH HEY WOULD YA LOOK AT THAT, A SHARD OF THE TRAVLER RIGHT THERE"

It's terrible. I don't think I'll ever touch this franchise again. I felt like I was way too old to be playing video games when I was playing destiny 2, I haven't played in months

in case you missed it, Luke smith designed the new "experience" with his two 4 year old nieces in mind.. just so that you know where this "childish" aproach comes from.

1 ReplyI enjoy the occasional joke or lighthearted banter from an npc when it is an exception. When it sets the overall tone, the whole thing begins to not take itself seriously. D1 suffered from that a bit. Like SRL was fun for the activity, but if you really think about it, it makes a joke out of being a guardian meaning jack squat. Darkness? What Darkness? Just here racing bikes. D2 has it worse. Some missions or strikes are just one long Failsafe or Asher Mir improv routine. Keep the darkness in the Darkness imo.

The plot was like a bed time story you tell your little children, before they drift off to sleep in never never land.
-
It makes me laugh when people go on about how improved the story is in D2. They only difference is that while D1 has a good story incoherently told, D2 has a bad story coherently told. Yay.

It wants to be Kingdom Hearts but just can't get past Serious Sam.

Don't forget the kiddie comic. Why didn't they take a survey of the age of their base? Destiny had squeakers surely but surprisingly more adults played the co-op game. I'm 47 as a example and I'm embarrassed when ghost says some of the stupid shit he says. The idea of destiny is amazing for someone my age that played castle wolfenstine so long ago. In the 80's and 90's this wasn't even in our dreams. Why it's so disappointing to see bungie take the greed road and mismanage this to death. I just hope a better developer can really run with this idea and not screw it up so completely.

Not to mention the message it sends, basically the storyline was saying: "without our light, we are powerless and worthless" And Gaul was literally saying how much he deserved the light, but was powerful without it anyway! So maybe Gual did deserve the light. I was kind of hoping we wouldnt get our light back for a really long time ans we had to rely on our survival instincts and abilities, give us new gameplay mechanics that would help us in the wild. And the way we got our light back was from an encounter with Gaul, and the light would go to whoever deserved it the most. It would have proven that humanity deserved the light, but didnt need it to be powerful, which is overall a way better message than what we got.

1 ReplySo go play CoD? It's a T rated game, many kids and adults alike play it. Star WARS is for kids too, just because there's is fighting and warfare doesn't mean it has to be gratuitous.
-
3 RepliesI haven't really notice a decline in story quality, even taking into consideration the grimoire. I think its because there is more of a actual story now and less speculation and rumor it seems worse.
-
2 RepliesSeriously, use the right words if you are going TO call anything TOO childish.
-
Edited by JC is da bomb: 1/19/2018 6:56:22 PMOne of my biggest problems with the story is that they tease that Gaul would become a legit guardian towards the end but no, he gets spoken to once and he's back to stealing the light, any sort of character that Gaul had went straight out the window so we can have one lackluster boss fight
-
D2's story is like that overused storyline of the bad guy taking our stuff and we overcome something to become powerful, except that we get all our powers back in 5 minutes.

Cringy and full of plot holes. When a company spends million developing a game and spends over a year working on it, you would think they could at least put a little thought into the plot. A city as big as New york is attacked by the cabal and they evacuate to a farm... wut? The cabal doesnt bother to atack this magic farm thats home to millions of humans? I mean the full force of the cabal (which spans the galaxy) with ships the size of planets and star killers is beaten back by some humans launching an attack from a farm yard barn...

6 RepliesEdited by Backlum Chaam: 1/17/2018 11:47:45 PMYeah-I find most of the dialogue very very cringey. The worst is failsafe n her “other” self. Though that bit she cuts off Zavala with a “boop” is hilarious. That’s about it though. Edit. Oh n I quite like the vex arm guy-just cus he seems to find most ppl intolerable n I can relate to that 😁

The dialogue was cringe af. The characters are 1 dimensional. Plot was super basic. Seems like Destiny will never have a good story. All the good things will remain in the lore and maybe that’s for the best. Bungie would probably -blam!- it up
