There's so much to be done with this, you could have a new energy type "darkness", new subclasses complying to that new energy type, a new race of guardians (taken by darkness, like the opposite of the awoken), you could have timed PvP events consisting of battles between consumed guardians and guardians of the light, you could have a complete new enemy type, you could have interesting new npc's, a new social space, etc.

This idea would solve the repeatability issue in a heartbeat. Consumed vs light. That would be insane.

Omg ikr. Honestly we need to stop talking. Bungie is so shallow that if they see us talking about an idea like this that so doable; they'll abandon it due to copy infringement or some other bullshit like that.
