I don't mean to sound like an elitist prick, but your title is a very typical sort of statement from someone who doesn't understand how software development works. This has to be the 8th time I've typed this today: changing an integral system like that is like knocking out a load-baring column of a house. It's not easy and it risks ruining everything else around it.

  • As I've stated before. I actually know some things in game design. I have witnessed 3d models, full character, from scratch to in game moving around killing stuff within a weeks time. Once the project started, it was literally 4 days and it was done by me (modeller) and the game designer. 2 people done this in a weeks time. I can only imagine what it's like having even 20 people working on something like this. I've also made a mock up model of a gun, put it in a game engine, ran around and shot boxes. It was 3 hours. If people with 20+ experience in game development need half a year to do something as simple as moving weapons around form one slot, to another and changing the data sheet on the weapon. Something is terribly wrong with bungies software.

  • Hammering a nail into a piece of wood isn't the same as building a house.

  • Umm.. Actually it is.. I done that too. Also rocked houses, sheet rocked them, plastered them, painted them.. The only difference is I never took part in the foundation. But once the foundation is down. All other things follow quickly.

  • Do I really have to explain this further? Whatever small project you worked on couldn't possibly match the size or complexity of something like Destiny. The more complex a system becomes the harder it is to make changes without breaking other systems that interact with it. You also have to consider non-code related things like how would this change affect the ammo economy? How would this change affect PvE balance? PvP balance? General game feel? Will this change actual solve the problem it's supposed to? Will it create new problems? etc. Game development is about more than just the code and graphic models, game design is a field of study unto itself. It's not about how hard it would be to actually change the code, that's the easiest part, it's figuring out how to change the code so that nothing else breaks because of the change, either code-wise or design-wise. Let me rephrase my previous statement: Just because someone knows how to hammer a nail into a piece of wood that doesn't mean they know how to build a house or how to do it well.

  • ...or now be a qualified architect to design the house. Good post.

Actually it's probably worse than taking out the load bearing beams. It's more like hot swapping a new operating system for another. How hard is it to adjust the way you play? Changing ones strategy and tactics from D1 to D2 seems like a relevant distinction. I would expect D3 to change from D2 as well.
