Anyone else not a fan of 'Space Magic?' This always feels a bit irritating. I love the idea of high science and mind-bending concepts appearing to us as magic, but I always want their to be some grounding in reality and science - some theoretical way it might be possible. 'Space Magic' seems like a cheap way to justify the universe without having to explain how and why - which is where it always really gets interesting.

Does bungie actually explain some of the stuff in game as “Space magic”!? I just thought it was a funny thing the community made up...

1 ReplyI think the scientific explanation of Paracausality is there in the lore but not all lore is going to be presented in a scientific manner because not all characters view The Traveler, Light, and Dark scientifically. Many view them spiritually. Neither perspective is wrong, and I think the diversity of perspectives is kind of awesome.

So you don’t want a medal when you get 3 kills with a nova bomb?

1 ReplyIf you aren't a fan of space magic then you are going to love wish-granting space dragons, a death cult who are empowered by the larvae of gigantic worm god proxies from another universe, and an entity that can redefine a being's existence through ontological/ontopathogenic powers of persuasion, returning them as Darkness infused paracausal puppets. Bungie describes Destiny as mythic sci-fi. Much of the early concepts for Destiny were high-fantasy, but they found they couldn't quite leave their sci-fi roots behind so they compromised on a hybrid game.

Destiny is a very science fantasy universe. Most things have some degree of realism behind them, and the things that don’t are only explained by "space magic". I can see how this an annoying cop out. Like how Sloane should be dead without her helmet on while within Titan's atmosphere. But in most cases where there really shouldn’t be a good explanation magic is there to give one. That’s really how the whole "fantasy" part comes into play. For example, how the Ascendant Hive like Oryx have their throne worlds, the Deathsigers, or even the Taken as a whole. There’s no logical reason behind them other than "the power of the Darkness" or "Hive death ritual magic". And I don’t really see how you could explain those things without fantastical elements. Otherwise it wouldn’t be science fantasy, but rather science fiction.

You know it was Mass Effect who started the Space Magic trend

Destiny Space Magic Forever!

Destiny was intended to be a fantasy game but in production became sci fi so you can see where the "space magic" comes from. I always thought that some kind of nano tech was the reason for the powers using the energy a persons body creates and that the Traveller generates used to power the little machines. This could explain why most Guardians have no memory of their former lives as the nano machines used DNA traces to recreate a persons body but not able to rebuild the mind lost so long ago and why Exos can be Guardians.

3 RepliesThe traveler is from a different dimension with different physics meaning it, the light, and the darkness, can do whatever they want. This is known as paracausality. However since you can easily be summed up with two mildly amusing words there’s really no reason to write it out in a boring paragraph. But hey if you prefer it you do you.
