Like many of the folks here on b.net, I have been a long time Halo fan. I just finished the Halo 5 campaign and I am totally surprised at how bad it was. Somehow 343 took the feedback from Halo 4 and made a game that was worse! They sidelined Master Chief even though this was a major criticim of Halo 2. The voice acting for Locke is just terrible. Worst of all, the fights were boring. More robot dogs and more Wardens does not make a fun more fun. If anyone can recall a memorable fight sequence in the campaing, I'd love to know.
I'm reserving judgment for multi-player. Mostly I've been cannon fodder as I try to adjust to the Xbox controller and the shooting mechanics. I know the community has had two years to git gud, so maybe I'll enjoy it more when I get up to speed. Any tips on multi-player would be appreciated.
EDIT: Updated to reflect the bizarre reality that Mike Colter provided mo-cap and 3-D face modeling but not his voice. (He was great as Luke Cage, so I doubt this was a career setback for him.)

6 RepliesThe campaign was awful. Bryan Reed the storywriting lead (I think that's his name) is the biggest problem. His narrative directions of the game are just so off. Almost everyone on Fireteam Osiris I didnt care for (expect Buck of course) and Master Chief only had 3 missions... Epic fail. Multiplayer was a different experience though. I actually enjoyed it a lot compared to Halo 4's. The ranking system doesn't make a lot of sense though. Warzone is also fun.

1 ReplyCongrats, you’re only 2 years late to the party.

1 ReplyAs somebody who competes in the multiplayer, I really enjoy the gameplay and feel it’s the best Halo has ever had. I think where they went wrong, was they focused too much on making the gameplay and multiplayer good from the backlash from Halo 4, not enough time and effort went into the campaign and story.

-Story sucks. -Multiplayer is decent. -Req system is a cash grab. All you need to know.

1 ReplyEdited by Talk2MeToner: 1/16/2018 2:52:15 PMI think the games are fine except no one cares about Prometheans and AI enemies. I wanted the forerunners to show up but not like this. Bring back the damn Flood. The game is about The Flood, the Halos were created because of The Flood. And the last two games don't even center around Halos. Bring the Flood back and save the trilogy. Even I could write a reason for them to show up again that is highly believable

6 RepliesEdited by Jono: 1/13/2018 11:08:31 AMAs someone who loathes 343i and any Halo game made after Halo 3, I actually like Halo 5's gameplay. I still don't like sprint and having that Spartan Charge thing or whatever it's called, but the game is light years ahead of Reach and Halo 4's gameplay. I would take Halo 5 over them both any day.

Multiplayer is pretty fun if you ask me, that's all I came for really, the campaign is okish but it's not worth the disproportionate rants.

5 RepliesEdited by Fox McCloud 007: 1/15/2018 2:34:55 AMEverything about Halo 5 was so bad that honestly, eventhough 4 was a far cry it was still better. -Toxic community -Broken gameplay that punishes long time players -Garbage storyline that explains nothing to new players unless they go buy H4 to play Spartan Ops -Microtransactions and horrible loot drops -Game crippling bugs in firefight -Poorly programmed AI enemies -Poorly designed UI -And to top it all off a game company that doesnt give a damn about their playerbase

3 RepliesI think it's kinda funny how everyone bashes 343, but clearly they have more of the old Bungie there and all the Halo fanboys hate 343 because they aren't the old Bungie.

Edited by Jotaro Kujo PhD: 1/13/2018 8:01:00 PMHalo 5 is like the anti-Halo 4. While 5's campaign was absolute dogshit, 4's was decent, even if it would have been better off as a book. While 4's gameplay was Reach 2.0, 5's at least makes everyone start with the same weapons and equipment (although I still hate sprint). And of course, Halo 4 still had considerable depth to player customization while Halo 5 doesn't even allow you to make custom emblems. The discussion of Forge would probably warrant its own thread, but I think everyone can at least say that 5's iteration is a masterpiece. Aside from the campaign, I'd say Halo 5's worst aspect is Warzone. While objectively ambitious, I think it quickly regressed into nothing more than a REQ farm. Ironically, a game mode with massive maps and every vehicle and weapon possible is the most boring part of Halo 5. A major pitfall of the multiplayer is the map selection, though. I would still play Arena regularly if the maps weren't so bad. Overgrowth is a mess of hallways, Torque and its remix are simply cluttered, Molten is just...bad, and Tyrant is way too small for anything other than Doubles. Hell, some of these maps make Complex look good. But one of the worst aspects of most of Halo 5's maps has got to be the generic UNSC aesthetic. Nearly every map, even the better ones like Empire and Eden, all have the same bland, military-industrial look. At least Halo 4 had some variation in its looks.

More Buck, More Master chief, less fireteam osiris, less walking missions.

The only thing i remember from halo 5 was when they added the custom game browser, i had tons of fun playing newer versions of fat kid and other fun custom games.

3 RepliesTo be honest, when it comes to MP, watch players better than you on YouTube. I did for a little bit, and I started to pick up little things they did, soon enough, I was a leading player.

Kinda wonder how Bungie would have handled Halo given what’s happened with both Destiny’s if they never left Microsoft?
-
5 Replies343i happened. Halo 5 is the worst story by far. I fear for Halo 6. At this point I'm not pre ordering it, Halo 5 is the first Halo to make me not pre order the next. All they seemed to care about with Halo 5 was reqs and Warzone.
-
Halo 5 was a multiplayer only game to me, and that’s how I will always view it.
-
1 ReplyI didn’t think it was all that bad. My problem was that it felt less like a full fledged sequel to the story set up in halo 4, and more like a short prequel to Set up halo 6. The story might not seem so bad when halo 6 is out, but it just doesn’t stand on its own, which is is an issue when it looks like Halo 6 won’t be here until 2019. Multiplayer however, I love. Unlike halo 4 and reach, the armour abilities are balanced in that every player has them. Slayer has classic AR or BR starts and none of the maps are outright terrible. The gameplay is like classic halo at its core with an extra layer. Large step up from Halo 4 which altered the core gameplay far to much to the point it was almost a CoD clone. Halo 4 had a pretty good story, Halo 5 has a great multiplayer. Let’s hope 343 can pull it altogether for a great halo 6. It will be their third game after all.

4 RepliesI just have to say, the fighting three wardens was most memorable...took me forever to beat them in legendary, had to use the ai players as shields and bait...
-
disagree. I think it was fine. Wasn't as emotional as 4. And wasn't as fun as some moments through 1-3 but it wasn't awful. I think misleading marketing was the main issue.
-
Disagree on the voice acting. You'll likely get demolished in multiplayer.
-
I can’t comment on the story cuz I haven’t played it, but I do like halo 5 pvp.
-
Glad to say I put halo down for good after I played halo3 and realized it was almost exactly like 1 & 2

2 RepliesI don't get it. Hunt the Truth, Halo Nightfall, were both amazing. They were great set ups for Halo 5. But Halo 5 didn't use any of that stuff. Where was Blue Team's betrayal? It said they went rouge but in the game it just seemed like they left to do another mission. They didn't get any civilians killed, they didn't do anything illegal, nobody thought "Oh maybe Master Chief is a bad guy." During the story. In reality it was just, Laskey: "Alright chief come back to infinity." Chief: "....No...." Laskey: "Alright boys lets hunt 'em down." I thought Locke would hate Chief for the terrible things he did. The trailer that showed Chief at the bottom of the statue with Locke about to shoot him, and then the flipped version? Where the hell was that? Jul M'dama was a major antagonist in that side story in Halo 4. Destroyed Requiem. Kidnapped Halsey. Jul M'dama dies and Halsey is rescued in a cutscene at the end of the first mission. 343 clearly wants to incorporate boss fights so bad, why didn't they make Jul M'dama a boss like halfway through the campaign instead of reusing the same boss over and over again? It's so pathetic. Just let the people who made Hunt the Truth and the trailers write the story god's sake. 343 is the most incompetent company on the face of the Earth. I would like to see them attempt to make their own IP, rather than ruin the greatest IP ever made.
-
my big gripe with it is that they killed off didact where he can introduce new enemies not robots and some more unexplored territory of the milky moo.
-
That was an one of the big things I didn't understand about Halo5. They built up this entire confrontational situation between the MC and Locke. Two entirely valid (to them) POV....and we get bupkis with a boring story and a worse "end".
-
2 RepliesThey Def missed the mark by alienating anyone who is not upto date with the lore from outside sources such as novels. That said, I think 343 has acknowledged this and due to some recent leaks and a loot crate connection, it seems as tho halo 6 will have a solid story. Let's just hope it's all in game this time.
