Is it good idea? Would you buy it?
Let me clarify then, I merely asked you if they would make the game 'better'; I never said you thought as much. Seeing as how you answered my question however, and that you don't feel updated graphics would benefit the game, why then would an update to implement them be needed? In other words, we clarly agree that the heart of a game is in its story and gameplay, with graphics contributing to those things at best and being simply superflous at worst, so why call for an update to them? Not slamming you, but it is my belief that graphics appeal to younger gamers, while the more intangible/non-visible elements of a game appeal to more mature ones.
Oh I don't think it's needed, it's just kind of a dream of mine to see Marathon in modern day graphics. I have no real reason lol I wouldn't want to see it happen just for the sake of updating it in the graphics department.
Posted By: Gzaizi Yeah...well, they do play pretty much exactly the same (especially Halo:CE).
How do they play the same? Sure their both FPSs and sure some of the weapons are similar but in Marathon there are puzzels unlike in Halo, you can't jump nor reload your weapon without emptying your clip. You can swim, there are no vehicles etc. Their are so many gameplay differences. Don't even get me started on the story lol [Edited on 09.07.2010 5:56 PM PDT]
Posted by: Potomo I never said improved graphics make a game better. All I said is that I would love to see Marathon in modern day graphics. I've always believed story and gameplay should come first when developing a game. I would never want the story or gameplay to change because if it did then it wouldn't be Marathon anymore. So don't worry no pistol duel at dawn lol
Let me clarify then, I merely asked you if they would make the game 'better'; I never said you thought as much.
Maybe the question to ask to you, then, is would 'better' graphics make the game 'better'? My answer is no, they would not. And if the orignal game is not improved in any tangible way save for its graphics, how can it actually be 'better'? Graphics are merely visual, whereas a good story, a good game, is more than its visual components. If story and gameplay go unchnaged, and the only difference in graphical in nature, how can you honestly say you think they would imporve the game? And if the story or gameplay were to be changed... well... that's an issue I feel can only be resolved by a pistol duel at dawn.
I never said improved graphics make a game better.
Posted by: Potomo I've been playing Marathon since 96. Played Infinity to death, and Love the series. If they made a game now that was like Marathon, it would be exactly like Halo but with more reading.
Posted by: Placid Platypus
Posted by: Pimpadelic X Would the 15 year jump in graphics take away from the experience?
So what, simply rerelease the game with new graphics? Other than milking the proverbial cash-cow, what would that accomplish? Leaving all other aspects intact, re-releasing a game simply to incorporate advances in graphics technology would be pointless as you'd wind up with the same book, but with a new cover. Typically, I feel that anyone who seriously wants a game remade simply to enjoy 'better graphics' never truly enjoyed the orignal game in the first place, and through some mis-placed sense of 'newer' being 'better', calls for an update. To my mind, the only people (read: developers) who support or proceed with such inanity are desperate, lazy, or looking to make an easy buck, rather than being supportive of the original game and the fans of it.
I've been playing Marathon since 96. Now I see where you're coming from and I agree a lot of developers are taking advantage of the easy idea of simply remaking beloved games so that people will buy them without even thinking. But if Bungie ever did revitalize the Marathon series, they wouldn't do it with carelessness. They care about quality and their IPs and I have no doubt that if they revive the Marathon series through either a remake, prequel, etc., that it will be product of greatness. One that even Durandal would marvel at. Than again maybe I'm to optimistic lol

I personally think people now a days wouldn't appreciate everything Marathon is. Reading for sure they wouldn't appreciate. I'm sure over half the players would skip through all the text, get stuck on the first couple of levels, and then say the game is bad because they can't figure anything out even though all the instructions, most of them anyway, are given to you through all the terminals.

Personally, I would love a Marathon 4, but I have some concerns. 1) Would the 15 year jump in graphics take away from the experience? 2) Would people who aren't true Bungie fans enjoy reading the terminals? 3) Would people still enjoy the things that made Marathon great (IE: puzzles, the not-so-straight-forward gameplay, ect.) 4) Would people enjoy the simplicity of Marathon rather than the current model of constantly needing more.
