Star Wars Battlefront II physical disc Install

So, I got a copy of Battlefront II. I have a disc. Why would I not just be able to play the game when I pop the disc into the tray? What’s going on here?. Is this the standard now? Do you have to install a game even if you have a disc? And for some context, The last time I bought a physical disc was for the Xbox 360. And the only games I have bought since then were the Destiny games and I got them both digitally.

  • Welcome to next-gen gaming, where you have to wait 4 hours for your game to install and THEN have to wait another hour for an update to install. Once that's done, you have to sign in to your account in-game which takes about 20 or so minutes and then once that's all done, you can finally play your $60 game. Gone are the days of you simply putting in a disc and having the game start up.

    • Unfortunately that's just the way it's been since these current consoles have released. Games just don't fit on to the Blu Ray discs anymore. This all started in previous gen when games started to come with two disks; the install and the play disk. HOWEVER, I've found that on the Xbox One, you can download the basic game off of a disk without using data from your internet. If you put the console offline, and than pop the disk in, it will start downloading the base game from the disk. Not only does this not use the internet, it is much, much faster in my experience. After that's done, you can bring the console back online. You will more than likely have to download a few updates or patches before you play, but it shouldn't take so long! Hope this helped you a little!

      • The developers have taken massive advantage of increased hard drive space by not bothering to be efficient or compress data anymore. Also blue ray is slow so there is some merit to it in order to maintain peak performance. Just not these 80 gig monstrosities

      • Yeah it's a pity, when I buy a new game I want to play it the moment I get home, now I have to wait a day or even two to play it.

First of all, where have you been for the last 4 years of games being installed like this? Second of all, games are too big to fit on discs and will only get bigger. As sad as it is, discs will eventually become obsolete.

Disks are installed now really just for speedy access when playing - even just for loading textures for fast streaming from HDD rather than from slower disk reading while majority of RAM memory does other work. The 360 gave you the choice of installing, and I wish the latest gen did the same as installed games take up so much HDD space In the case of the Xbox one x, 4K graphics use so much memory, there’s not always enough space on a Blu-ray disk, though I believe Microsoft have implemented, or will, a way of selecting your game requirements based on what you need, thereby saving on install space and/or downloading

            • Every game on modern consoles has to be installed to the hard drive to play. Also, more and more games, especially with 4K textures, are too big to fit on a single disc. Since the majority of people have internet access, it makes more sense to put what will for on the disc, then make you download the rest, rather than for the publishers to spend money to put the game across multiple discs.

            • I always assumed that at this point the games are so big that if the console was truly running everything from the disk it would overheat and probably run slowly

            • The way I hear it, games are too big now to actually fit on the Blu-Ray. The disc will speed up the installation process, but beyond that, it functions more like a key. One of the nice things about the Switch using cartridges. Cartridges, of course, are more expensive to make.
