The facts of this situation don't give a damn whether you **like** me or not. A video game is a commercial PRODUCT....not an entitlement or a public utility. Making video games is a BUSINESS...not a charity. We have so many options of games to choose from in the video game market because people at every level of the business can make MONEY by providing that product. From the employees to that make the game....to the executives that run the companies...to the shareholders who risk their money to invest in those companies so those games can be made. Take that ability away...and the money and talent that makes it possible GOES AWAY. In a free market society, talent follows money....and (investment) money follows returns. So if investing in making video games suddenly only returns 2 cents on every dollar risked....investors will simply take their money ouf of these companies...and invest them in ones that will give 10 cents on every dollar risked. Which means there is less money to make video games....and they either stop being made, or the ones that are made are of poorer quality. So if you GENUINELY like games---and just aren't trying to get something-for-nothing----the LAST thing you want is for video games to stop being profitable, or for people not not be able to make a very good living making them. Do you think professional sports would be played at the level it is right now if professional athletes only got paid $30K a year? Who'd risk their bodies or their health (football) or bother with living out of a suitcase travelling around the country for months out of the year (baseball, golf, basketball) ..... ....if all they made was the same amount they could make working at a local department store. THAT's the trap that communism fell into. People develop talents, take risks, and work hard in return for REWARDS. ...you take those rewards away because it results in inequalities that are declared "unfair"....then people stop putting in that extra effort. Everyone tries to get by with the least amount of effort for the pay they get....and the economy grinds to a halt....and nothing gets done.

  • I could understand your rant if the game wasn't profitable, but the fact remains that it is incredibly profitable. How Bungie and Activision choose to compensate their employees is another issue entirely.

Then you don't understand how business with publicly owned (stock selling) companies works. If your business isn't very profitable, NO ONE is going to invest in it. What you can offer in return isn't worth the RISK of giving you money to do business. Which means you don't have access to the money you need to OPERATE your business. The purchase of shares (stock) is money that investors give to companies in order to do business....in return for partial ownership. The price of all distributed shares x the number in circulation determines the VALUE (market capitalization) of the business. That company value is a form of "collateral" against which these companies can BORROW money they need to fund projects....or invest in improvements....or fund new jobs to hire people and expand the company. The less your company is worth, the less banks and other source of money (capital) are willing to let you borrow. So the $3 billion dollar loss in stock value that EA has suffered due to this lootbox business isnt' just embarrassing. It is a kick in the crotch to their ability to do business on a day to day basis. EA is big enough that they'll survive this....but it hurt them like hell...and has put their executives on thin ice. Because their investors are UNHAPPY at the prospect of less proft and a lower return on their investments. I'm ranting because I'm trying to get you guys to understand that THIS is how the world works...and THIS is why you have all the variety of video games in the marketplace to choose from. Once making and selling games STOPS being VERY profitable.....both the money and the TALENT will LEAVE....and you will be left with nothing but ashes. So this greedy desire for something-for-nothing, and ignoring the FACT that games are a LUXURY product that NO ONE needs to make, and no one needs to live off of....its just as corrosive to gaming as any "corporate greed". This is a business....not a charity. Only CHARITIES operate in a not-for-profit manner.
