  • <Calus started off as a Cabal who thought the current militaristic bureaucracy was ruining the civilians' lives. He then organized a mutiny and overthrew the aristocrats and the military commanders. He threw their riches and even them into the mob of people, who do what you think they would do. He became the people's emperor. One of his first orders of business was to exile the Consul. He neutered him and sent him off into the desert. Later on his closest allies and even family betrayed him. Ghaul, raised by the Consul for vengeance against Calus, led the Midnight Coup and overthrew Calus. His own daughter betrayed him, crushing his only way to stop the Coup... a bone. This bone was possibly the very thing that lead to him becoming Emperor. An Ahamkara bone. Anyway, fearing the mob, they didn't execute him, instead exiling him onto the Grand Leviathan and sending it on a course to the edge of the Galaxy. There he met... something powerful. He realized it was something greater than him, and he turned his ship around aspiring to be greater than himself and be the herald for {IT}s arrival. Overtime he accumulated a Loyalist regime. This included normal Cabal soldiers and Psions. A special elite Psion class known as Councilors were formed and they contributed a lot to Calus. For one thing, they made his Nightmare Realm. He also recruited "Shadows" from different worlds. These Shadows became assassins responsible for killing parts of his hit list, those who betrayed him. As the Red Legion neared Sol, all the Shadows were sent to assassinate him. They failed. Calus awaited until Ghaul was killed to enter Sol and park itself near Nessus. He invited us so that we could become the new assassins meant to kill the rest of the people on his list and take back the Empire under him. Whether or not he keeps to his word is a different story.>

      • Calus has some powers unknown to us. My theory has been that he’s found some power from another planet his ship ate that allowed him to create his “void realm” possibly an ahamkara or another powerful entity that will likely be the boss of the next raid lair. I imagine his powers will be better explained in the next dlc

      • I saw a comment telling his story below. As for his powers, probably master strategist and strength and psionic stuff but nothing out of the ordinary UNLESS he made a pact with the darkness at the edge of the galaxy and gained their power. “Grow fat from strength” or whatever. He eats planets and gains strength like oryx killed people and gained strength so I think he’s working with the darkness and will play a part in the next dlc dealing directly with the darkness

Cabal who rose to power and eventually became the emperor. He was eventually overthrown and exiled because the cabal thought he focused too little on war efforts and military. After he was exiled on his Leviathan ship (he was exiled on the because after he was overthrown by a coup, the citizens loved Calus too much and if the coup killed him or hurt him there would probably be an ensuing revolt) with his loyalists, he began recruiting and testing other races and cabal. He would go from planet to planet and threaten them with extinction. If the race could survive calus’ challenge (if they didn’t accept the challenge he would kill them and consume their planet, so they didn’t really have a choice), he would recruit them as one of his Shadows. These shadows started to take revenge on the cabal who overthrew him as under Calus’ directive. We know of six of these shadows: Jarus of the Sindu (Ace Defiant), Rull of the Kaga Clipse, Fulminator of the Arcborn, Feltroc (I believe she’s a psion) Nohr of the cabal, and Sekris of the Eliksni. Along with recruiting Shadows for his bidding, Calus also claims to have encountered a great truth while in space. He claims to have stared into the Void and tells us there is more than the Traveler and it’s “lies”. We aren’t sure what Calus offers us, but he beckons us to seek him out so we can grow fat from strength.

        • Calus was the Emperor of the Cabal Empire for many years. While the Empire was at peace under Calus, but over time it had stagnated and corruption was rife. Calus was eventually overthrown by Ghaul, the Consul and a conspiracy of other politicians that were unhappy with his carefree, hedonistic ways, and sent into exile on board the Leviathan, seen by may as the ultimate example of Calus's wastefulness. The Leviathan had a pre-programmed course built into it, but this soon malfunctioned and the ship was free to go wherever its master chose. Calus travelled to the darkest corners of the galaxy, his legion of followers and companions that followed him into exile ever at his side. Eventually the wandering former emperor learned of the Light and the Darkness through encounters with various ruins and beings of both sides, possibly including Savathun, Oryx's sister. With all of this information in hand, and his ever-loyal guards behind him, Calus set course for the Sol system. He was aware that those whom deposed him were there as well, and therefore kept out of reach of detection. He learned of the horrific failure that Primus Ta'aun's campaign aboard Oryx's Dreadnought, as well as of those that did manage to defeat Oryx: the Guardians. When Ghaul and the Consul failed to claim either the Light or the Darkness for their people, Calus made his presence known to his people on Mars, extending invitations to join him aboard the Leviathan to those that still showed loyalty to him. It's possible that a Cabal civil war is in the works on Mars, between those loyal to Calus's vision of a peaceful empre and those that still embrace Ghaul's vision of conquest and ascendance. Calus then made contact with humanity on Earth, sending not just an invitation, but a challenge to those Guardians that had defeated Ghaul. As the world-eating Leviathan began devouring Nessus, the Guardians accepted the challenge, boarding the Leviathan unopposed. When these Guardians proved their mettle against a mechanical copy of Calus (the Leviathan Raid) he rewarded them handsomly. What Calus's future plans are, as well as his overall goals, are not yet known, but it does appear that he is more of a friend than an enemy. It's possible that he wants to incorporate the human race into his empire, either as a client race or as a conscripted race (like the Psions).

        • Took over the old regime of the Cabal and made it great again. Got taken over and kicked out by Ghaul. After floating around in the Leviathan on a pre-set course, they come to a black void of nothing and Calus has a spiritual awaking, then goes and gets powerful again.

        • It's in the game...er, uh, "Emperor Calus was Emperor of the Cabal Empire...until he wasn't." Looking for a deeper story in game? "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain" So, like all the good parts of Destiny, go to a 3rd party site and find the answer that should have been told/explained/shown in the actual game: https://www.destinypedia.com/Emperor_Calus

          • If you were looking for deep lore and a good story you're playing the wrong game. Calus exists to be an antagonist for the raid. That's it. All of the lore behind all Oryx, Crota, and Aethon was written by people who already left Bungie. We will never see a return to that quality of writing.

                    • Something i think that was overlooked entirely is how the Cabal societal structure shifted when Calus took over. Before Calus, the Cabal were a conquest only/take no prisoners militaristic society. Soldiers were exiled from their home planet when they set off for war and not allowed to return unless they were victorious. Any planet they conquered was blown up when they were leaving. Now Calus comes along and reforms everything to something akin to the Holy Roman Empire. Sort of a, "trade agreements or warfare, either is fine with us" policy. So why is Calus so interested in playing war games with the vanguard? Keeping his enemies closer? Gathering intel? Or are we going to see an alliance with the Cabal instead of the Fallen?
