Surviving humanity gathered from the wild under the Traveler to form the last city. Walls were being constructed to help defend the people when the Fallen attacked. The Fallen wanted to gain back the Traveler that had left them, and sought destroy the Last City. They attacked on Six Fronts at once, requiring the guardians of the time to defend against the hordes. The surviving guardians became legends that are still spoken of today (Osiris, Saint-14, Ana Bray, etc) Official Twilight Gap lore: http://www.ishtar-collective.net/categories/battle-of-twilight-gap?highlight=Twilight+Gap Summary: Recognizing that greater forces were required, the Fallen decided to attack again, this time with an alliance amongst all the Fallen Houses (aka: Factions: Kings, Devils, Winter, and Wolves). Sheer numbers would be their strategy. The Fallen breached a section of the now complete wall at a location called Twilight Gap. However, the House of Wolves were in transit from outside the system in the Asteroid Belt. They made a brief stop there prior to rendezvousing with the other houses on earth when they were attacked by a then unknown group, the Awoken. The Awoken made their existence known in a surprise attack that killed millions of the House wolves and their leadership. Without the wolves numbers, the remaining fallen proved once again unable to win, and Twilight Gap was the last attack on the city until the events of D2 and the red legion. Following the attack, Queen Mara of the awoken subjugated the wolves and became their leader until they revolted (House of Wolves DLC). On earth, the Vanguard put out bounties and parts of the vanilla D1 is our guardians killing much of the remaining leaders of the other houses. This has left the Fallen in a weakened state, which is what we see in D2.

Six fronts: The battle of six fronts was a battle during the early city age where the four Titan orders held six fronts against the fallen. This was a pivotal battle for the city as many hero’s were present. This includes Saint 14 and Osiris. After the city won the battle the titans began construction of the city wall to prevent such an attack from happening ever again. Other outcomes were Saint 14’s crusade against the fallen and Osiris’ rise to power. Twilight gap: this battle was much more recent. It was also a fallen assault on the city that while failed still led to countless loses such as Ana Bray. The gjallorhorn was made from fallen guardians armor and given to the survivors in memorial. All the fallen houses united to attempt to take the city but the awoken intercepted the house of wolves beginning the reef wars but saving us. Shaxx led a counteroffensive to drive back the fallen and while causing a major rift between his mentor, Saladin and himself he likely saved the city. He created the crucible after to train guardians for another such attack. I hope this helps and feel free to ask me any more questions.
