My experience of D2+CoO from someone who hasn’t played D1

So this is going to be coming from both a positive and negative perspective on what I thought about both the base game and the expansion. Before I start, I just want to get one thing out of the way. FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THAT DESTINY 2 AND/OR CURSE OF OSIRIS IS TRASH, PLEASE GIVE CONTEXT OR EXPLANATION ON WHY YOU THINK THAT IS THE CASE. DON’T SPAM BUNGIE WITH ->INSERT D2 IS TRASH HASHTAG HERE<- BECAUSE IF YOU DO, IT WON’T BE VALUABLE FEEDBACK TO THEM AND THEY WON’T KNOW HOW TO FIX THEIR GAME. Sorry, I just wanted to make that important. I’m ready to start. Now, the reason why I never played Destiny 1 was that I never owned an Xbox or PlayStation system in my life. The only things I ever played on were Nintendo consoles and on a PC. Even though I’m a PC player on Destiny 2, I thankfully just started working at a job and managed to pre-order both the base game and expansion with my own money so I wasn’t locked out of the paywall, fortunately. The base game is fun and still is whenever I log in. I love the gunplay, quests, events, Strikes, the gear, you name it. I do agree it can be extremely tedious when you’re farming the same things over and over again, but honestly, I don’t mind it that much. I’m one of those people who like to do repetitive things and I like how fast it passes time for me. It’s why I like World of Warcraft and its many ways you can pass time. My only gripes about the game are the endgame and how I just didn’t feel too enveloped in the story. I do like how it tried to by introducing your character in the cutscenes even if they couldn’t talk. I will agree the end game feels bland and unrewarding thanks to Eververse, but I really enjoyed doing the raid even if I only played it one time and Nightfall strikes were and still are a pleasant experience as well. Curse of Osiris. I’m not sure how to feel about this expansion because I haven’t played the first Destiny to get experience from those expansions and I guess I’m a casual? I honestly don’t know what it means to be casual because video game communities have always thrown that word around like it’s some kind of person that we don’t want alive anymore and that plague the community, apparently. Negative stuff first, positive second. I didn’t like how they reskinned weapons. The eye in the top-left corner always excited me because I was happy that I got something new, but then I realized, “this is just Better Devils...” The Infinite Forest, despite the name, felt linear and a little uninteresting to me. I wish there was more randomness in the generated simulations and new enemy types, but it was just through four to five sections of OK level design before running for 20 seconds through a triangle tunnel to get to the next part of the quest. However, I really enjoy the visuals of the Infinite Forest. Seeing the past and future of Mercury was beautiful to look at which made me really sad that they weren’t zones you could farm for public events in. The new PvP maps are really fun to play through and I’m kind of a sucker for PvP in this game because everything still feels balanced (yes I know about the Lens controversy but I haven’t run into one YET). I don’t have anything to say about the new raid or the new prestige Nightfalls yet but they sound like they’re good from what I hear. I don’t think CoO is an expansion that everyone needs to avoid at all costs like a disease. Yes, it did disappoint more than making people happy, but I say it’s worth buying the pass because you do get more endgame content and you get another expansion coming this Spring that will hopefully be better than this one. If you don’t think it’s worth it or you didn’t agree with what I said, that’s perfectly fine. These are just my opinions and you reserve the right to have your own. Thank you for reading.

  • There's 2 types of Destiny player. One that did endgame content every week until they got everything. And those that didnt do endgame, or if they did, they did it once or twice, maybe didnt even finish the activity, and never did it again. Its funny how the 2nd lot of players tend to be ones that love Destiny 2 and the direction its going, and yet the 1st camp is the most vocal about their dislike of the game and its direction......

Hi Nice post. As a year 1 player who considers himself "mildly salty but not a hater" over Destiny 2, I'll try and explain some of the background. (TLDR: Just read the 6 bolded bits to get the general idea) 1) Destiny 1 was also controversial. Destiny launched with huge hype and huge controversy. The campaign was limited and shallow. The endgame progression involved grinding through the same strikes over and over in the hope of RNG blessing you with a slightly better piece of armour. All the best gear was dependent on RNG grinding. Angry Joe's review has an entertaining breakdown of how disappointing it was compared to the hype. This Kotaku article a year later explained what had been happening behind the scenes. However, the gameplay was good enough, the universe and lore intriguing, the PvP fun and the raid was excellent. And that was enough to provide a strong fanbase. Also, every DLC brought improvement, particularly the Year 2 expansion The Taken King. By year 3, game was largely in good shape. Skill Up's final review gives you a good idea of how Destiny 1 felt by the end. This led the community to have optimism that the troubles were over and, having delayed Destiny 2 by a year, Bungie would have had time to fix all the old problems and deliver on something amazing. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be... Destiny disappointed again... 2) Destiny 2's Story and Campaign Disappointed Again In Destiny 1, the original story was cut out and minimal effort put in replacing it. In the Taken King, there were actual cutscenes and the story campaign was very enjoyable. Destiny 2 looked like it would take this further. The opening missions really built things up well... and then it didn't really go anywhere, and although there were some really great moments here and there, (being exposed to the Sun while being on the Almighty) a lot of it was "meh". Worse still, while D1 had lacked a story, as it was introducing the enemy races for the first time, we got fresh experiences being introduced to them. In D2, we just fought the same enemies we'd already been fighting over and over for three years. The raid, while being okay, wasn't as fun as previous raids. It also felt smaller. And had a confusing overarching story/motives - are we stopping the Leviathan from destroying Nessus? Or are we here to entertain the deposed Cabal King who sends you his loyal servants for you to destroy for his entertainment? What made it worse was the feeling that we'd waited so long, for this? The game that had required multiple third party studios to help develop? This was it? It was quite an anti-climax. 3) Controversy with the endgame/replayability As I mentioned earlier, Destiny 1 had an annoyingly stingy approach to the best gear, all based around endless repetition in the hope that RNG would bless you. It turns out that many Destiny fans used to love this as it gave them an incentive to keep playing, and it meant that if they dropped something good, the drop was meaningful. If you were lucky enough to drop the Gjallarhorn or Vex Mythoclast in those early days then you had a clear advantage over those who didn't. In my opinion, D2's progression system for gear is better - giving you clear tasks to complete rather than repetition for RNG luck, but it also meant that when people largely had the bulk of what the game had to offer within 1-2 months of play... that was it, they had everything. What was there to work towards now? This made the game feel stale compared to D1 where there always seemed to be things to work towards. This is why you see so many people calling for random perk rolls for gear to be re-introduced, because they feel that would bring back a sense of uniqueness to gear that is currently missing. Personally I wouldn't like this - I think instead that the hardcore grind should be for cosmetic items. I'd like to see the Eververse Store items be unlockable through grind rather than RNG paywall. Lastly, the number of repeats from exotic engrams was quite frustrating as it was something they seemed to have solved near the end of D1, but now it was back again. It felt like a step back. 4) Controversy over the PvP balance vs chaos and power fantasy You mentioned that Destiny 2's PvP is nice and balanced. You're right, it is. This makes it more suitable for competitive matches than it used to be. However, many feel that a lot of the fun has been sacrificed from the game to achieve this. Destiny 1's PvP was chaotic. So many things could kill you in one hit, often feeling quite cheesy. However, it also allowed exciting plays where one player could single handedly clear out a room. Frustrating if you wanted a fair fight with a fair chance of winning, but fun if you could take being on the receiving end of these things with a sense of humour. Making things balanced has lost this chaos. Worse still, as there has been a refusal to separate PvP from PvE, changes to make PvP more balanced has impacted on PvE, particularly the PvE "power fantasy" - that is by working to level up your character, you could make them OP AF and then have fun obliterating the enemies that used to give you grief when you were a lower level. Shotguns, Fusion Rifles and Sniper Rifles were "special weapons" with more regular ammo. Grenades and melees were far more damaging and all your abilities, including supers, charged more regularly. Perks to generate orbs, charge your supers, were much more prevailant. Combined with strike modifers like the elemental burns, you could have a lot of fun with abilities. For example, this happened in one of the later Nightfalls. (Yes, that's a Nightfall boss you're seeing obliterated within a few seconds) All of this has been HUGELY toned down for the benefit of balance in PvP... Also, considering how much was sacrificed for a balanced competitive PvP mode, why wasn't there a ranked system from day 1? The options in PvP are so limited, compared to even Destiny 1 vanillas PvP modes and options, it almost feels like an extended BETA test than a complete game. 5) Microtransaction Controversy To be fair to Bungie, their microtransaction system is very similar to Overwatch's, which largely got away with it. However, even Overwatch's lootbox system holds cool stuff out of reach, requires you to gamble for the costmetic items you want, and has a business model based on exploiting whales rather happy customers all round. Battlefront 2's "step too far" has caused a backlash against lootboxes in general, which Bungie a suffering from a bit, especially following the controversy over XP throttling. I think it's also something that people wouldn't be overly fussed about if they were happy with the game, but given they're not, it winds them up even further. And the question has to be asked - given how much people are paying for the base game and dlc, should Bungie be trying to charge people even further? Even for cosmetics? Why is has this led to controvery over CoO Disgruntlement over these problems didn't really take off until October time. CoO is the first content release since then, so many see CoO as a missed opportunity to fix these larger problems. Add to that the controversies around dlc paywall and locked content... To be honest, there was similar controversy around the first D1 expansion, that merely gave a bit more content without fixing the wider problems. Real problem fixing didn't really come until the expansion a year after release. I guess we'll see a lot of anger in the meantime. Apologies for the essay. I hope you found it informative. :)

        • After 3 years of feedback THIS is what Bungie gave us... If you piss off the casuals, they leave... If you piss off the fan-base, they voice their dissatisfaction (not always in a constructive manner) Bungie has mislead us for the past 3 years, telling us that all the shortcomings in D1 would be alleviated in D2. They weren't; they were only exacerbated (connection quality, dev communication, Eververse, just to name a few) People don't like being told lies, especially about something that they have a passion for.

Lots of words to explain how you are ok with mediocrity and poorly designed game mechanics. Mercury is too small to hang out and farm on, the story promised time travel but its just a computer simulating time travel and didnt explain anything around the main character of the DLC....let down. Also the DLC didnt address the core gameplay issues which are why people are complaining about D2...the loot is still boring and theres nothing to chase....which is not good in a loot farmer game. Also it locked out people who didnt buy it...a shady tactic...even if backpeddling why even try that when the community is already dissatisfied with you product? Activision LOVES players like you though...they shovel shit down your throat and you love it, beg for more with wallet in hand, and then go on their forums and try to white knight them. Some of us have played some decent games in our lives and expected just a bit more from Bungie...we complain because the game needs improvement and we want it to be great.
