Dear Bungie,
I realize that you don't know who I am outside of the account attached to this post, but I've been supporting your company since 2001 (i.e the release of Halo: Combat Evolved). I was one of the countless others that stood outside of a game store to purchase Halo 2, and I was one of the countless others that finished the fight in Halo 3 (I even have a small poster signed by Master Chief to commemorate the deed).
Simply put, I'm a loyal customer.
And since you started this new adventure with the Destiny series, I've still been here supporting you. I got the game just a month or so after its release, and I would be lying if I said it wasn't a steady source of entertainment for me. At the same time, I would also be lying if I said this game was even remotely close to what we -- anyone that has played any of your previous games (Destiny excluded) -- all know you're capable of.
I have purchased every expansion from The Dark Below to Curse of Osiris. I've dealt with every buff and nerf to weapons and abilities; every quality of life change; every major disappointment whether it be from the story or the lack thereof. I've engaged in lengthy discourse over the matter with my fellow players - sometimes condemning your decisions, other times supporting them - both online and offline. I've casually browsed the forums here and there, and it seems the universal consensus is: you're screwing us, royally. Let's take a moment to talk about it.
Removal of Standardized Content
By this, I mean things like private crucible matches, individual strike selection (on normal and heroic setting), individual mission selection (on normal and heroic setting), heroic strikes, and things of this nature. Why were these removed in Destiny 2? If history serves as any indicator (and the release of CoO), it's so that you could re-implement them as "new features" with upcoming DLC. By no standard of decency is this acceptable, Bungie. We know it. You do too.
But why?
The reason why this is a bad thing is that it feels dishonest, even criminal. It comes off as shady, lazy, and really inconsiderate. That's like trying to give my Guardian the ability to shoot her gun and call it a new feature. All of the things I listed are standard - they should have been in the base game. They aren't new features or new content; they're basic mechanics that we, the players, already were accustomed to for years.
Thin, poorly constructed plots
The lore behind this game is incredible (pst, my dream career is to write for you). Of all the things I've seen people complain about on this forum, the story is rarely - if ever - one of them. You made this magnificent universe filled with memorable characters and incredible events, but here we are five expansions in, and outside of singular story development (i.e the campaign directly tied to my character as the protagonist), it feels like the entire system is the same place it was at the beginning of Destiny.
To keep things relevant, we'll use Curse of Osiris. In the trailer, it was insinuated that the main threat was the fact that the Vex had begun amassing an army of machines from the past, present, and future (super cool). Instead, the bulk of the story revolved around the Infinite Forest and finding a single robot that wanted to bring about a dark future.
Side note: The concept of the Forest is cool, but like most of your efforts regarding the Destiny franchise, it was horribly executed. The fact that every simulation always involved my Guardian running across the same big gap, opening doors and sometimes killing yellow/orange health enemies to open other doors, was painful. There was nothing "infinite" about the Forest, other than how sad and just cringe-worthy it was.
Think of what you could have really done with the Infinite Forest, had you wanted to. How many unique places have we been in Destiny and Destiny 2? Why not incorporate that into it? Have us on Mars in one, Venus in another, etc. Would it have taken more time in development? Yeah, but it would have been far more engaging than what you gave us. I would have loved to run through the Vault of Glass again during one mission, and then Dreadnaught during another (especially if they were randomized each time I entered). But I digress.
The story of Curse of Osiris was shamefully underwhelming. We had hardly any interactions with Osiris, this Warlock I've been reading about since the release of Destiny, and those we did were pretty disappointing. The missions were painfully straightforward, boring, and did nothing but to serve as the stepping stone for the next mission on the list. There was no development, no consequence, nothing. No to mention, Osiris' cameo in the fight against Panoptes wasn't even cool (when did he become Goku?). You could have made both him and Ikora more involved; actually helping us kill the enemies we were fighting. Not just with their abilities, mind you - similar to how Zavala assisted us in the battle at the Tower, but even better.
I get you're trying to sell this whole, "You are Legend" bit to the players. That's cool. But I don't think you realize what a major problem that poses for your ability deliver a meaningful story. Nothing feels dire because, well, I'm me - I can solve anything. That's a problem and it's become the backbone of your story as a whole. Food for thought.
Compromising your integrity for the bottom line
It's a business. We get that. But just because you're Bungie doesn't mean people won't stop playing your games if you continue down this dark road. Look at what happened to that game For Honor, or The Division, or any other game that thought they could just half-ass everything and get by.
What do I mean? I mean that it's a shame Eververse received more attention than the rest of the DLC. If you had put even half the effort and interest into Destiny 2 and Curse of Osiris, I'm sure a lot of these hateful posts flooding the forum wouldn't be here. We know you want to make money. Everyone does. But at some point, Bungie, you're going to have to ask yourself if it's worth it. Is trying to line your pockets with money worth losing the faith of the community you claim to cherish so much? You know the old saying, "Actions speak louder than words." So far, you've done a lot of talking and nothing else.
A new planet with the exploration value of the tower?
So, remember when I said people feel like you're screwing your fanbase? They're talking about this stuff. Sure, it's bigger than the tower if you include the Infinite Forest, but I'm not. Mercury is absolutely beautiful - beautiful, man! - and you limited us to an area the size of a small circle. Like, what? No one is ever here. I ran around a few hours before work and saw two, maybe three people. You could have done so much with this planet, Bungie!
Oh yeah, smart guy? Like what?
For starters, you could have played to the fact you very blatantly said the Vex were amassing an army from the past, present, and future. That's three unique areas right there. The planet could have been carved up according to those sectors, filled with Vex from each of those eras, with the center (the current area) being a melting pot. You could have used various means to show the development of the Vex from their clunky, rustic beginning to the sleek, lethal machines they are now, to the beautifully dangerous weapons they'll become in the future. Couple that with a proper Infinite Forest and you have some real groundwork for a DLC.
Rehashed armors and weapons.
A great deal of the armor sets in Destiny 2 are nothing more than reskins of the same model. Example: for the Titan class, The Shelter In Place, the Noble Constant, the Retro Grade set, and the EDZ set are literally the exact same model with just a bit of color, some thematic additions (moss, webbing, rust), and nothing else.
It would be nice to have something more unique available to us, but not necessarily requiring a raid or Trials of the Nine completion to obtain. When I first saw the trailer for Curse of Osiris, the thing I noticed right away was how unique Osiris' armor was. There hasn't been anything like it in Destiny that I've seen. That's what I'm talking about.
Armor and weapons play a critical role in this game, and the fact you offer shaders and ornaments means you understand how gamers tend to value aesthetics. Having a more generous catalog of armor to choose from would be refreshing, and also give renewed purpose to the grind.
Suggestions? The Cure?
There's really only one thing that can cure sloppiness - patience. You're rushing to deliver us content that's failing to expand the Destiny experience in a meaningful way. The most frustrating thing about all of this is that we all know you can do better than what we've currently experienced, and that you have all the resources and competence to deliver a truly astounding game.
You need to start taking your time; remember to take pride in your work. No one here values Eververse more than the game and the content you deliver, so stop putting so much emphasis on it. You need to shift your priorities and start focusing on what truly matters or the Destiny franchise is going to crash and burn. People are returning your game. Major streamers are finding greener pastures and taking their viewers with them (one of your more prominent streamers, Krafty, is even disenchanted with the game now. Fortnite much?).
Whatever you have planned for this next expansion for Destiny 2, scrap it. Start over, but this time do it right.
Sincerely,
Sibellae

I concur to many of the here written points by Sibellae. Anyhow i also whish to vent my anger about another point: forced PvP. Why? Why? WHY do you do this? Why do you force PvP upon your Playerbase with exotic quests like Ace of Spades, Malfeasanse or the last word? You know why i mostly ignore PvP? Because i suck in that category. I know that and i don't have ANY real fun in Gambit or Crucible. But still you force me to do this. Why? Why can't there be an alternative quest-route for PvE only? Let me guess: because othrwise many players wouldn't do those gamemodes? If that's the case, wouldn't that be also telling about those modes and what players like and don't like to do? And if that wasn't mean enogh, why are there questlines where it is possible to progress be subtracted? You think that's fair for someone who sucks at PvP? No it is frustrating. So if i may ask: Put more effort into story- and questdesign and stop forcing PvP, please.

Little has change, Forsaken has made destiny 2 better in almost all points, but after the huge disappointment that D1 has been so far that is the least they could do. Bungie keeps disappoint those of us that come form the beginning like halo 1, that supported bungie with our time and money. D2 vanilla is now free , and forsaken already comes with 2 expansion, great(desperate move) this would be okay if bungo did not bury the fans under oblivion. Trust in Bungie is FOREVER tarnished by deceiving player , hiding behind half ass excuses and simply not caring for the players , like Sibellae said that cared and to a fault still care. I cant help to feel deceived, i bough D2 as soon as i could, had to wait 1 year so i could spend that extra money( D2+ 2 expansion = 70€) to finally see i it given away 60 days after my purchase! if that was not bad i put up the money and bought forsaken +40€ (total of 110€ that is a 1/3 of our national minimum wage) (again believing to a fault) to see its price being reduced 10€ less than 24 hours after (this is just infuriating). Actions like this desperate search for new players at any cost, trampling old loyal costumers , selling exceptions , exaggerated prices, botched development jobs, story telling that looks similar to a Swiss cheese( these guys made HALO one of the most amazing story telling experiences), horrible franchise decision( how do you kill the most , and possibly only, good character in game how?!) No right deeds will ever undo so many wrongs there is just too much. Love can only take you so far... this is as far as i go. I just hope that sooner rather than later players start to understand that Bungie is not and will not ever be what it once was (cant believe these where the guys behind the halo franchise). Activision will put more and more pressure to monetize the game and everything else will get diluted.

1 ReplyWhat a shame, that nobody from Bungie ever read this........

Whatever you have planned for this next expansion for Destiny 2, scrap it. Start over, but this time do it right.
I totally agree with this suggestion but I also believe it would never happen. We've all seen the Activision contract since it was made public. The schedule is way too aggressive and contains dire consequences should Bungie fail to meet that schedule. How dire? Bungie currently owns the Destiny IP, but if they fail to meet certain release deadlines, Activision claims ownership. That's huge. Unfortunately this is something we'll see more of, not just in Destiny but in games in general. Publishers have fallen in love with the idea of "games as a service". Instead of just a one and done single player experience that players finish and walk away from, they want games that stay relevant and continually offer something new. This keeps players engaged longer and increases the amount of cash they'll spend on expansions and microtransactions. But the player base always burns through content way faster than any developer can make it. They're forced to assembly line the material as quickly as possible or risk losing their players to another game that just came out or just had an expansion. So instead of getting lovingly crafted experiences and loot, we get cookie cutter stuff because there simply wasn't time to do any better. This isn't me trying to defend Bungie or D2. I don't hate this game the way many around here seem to but I agree that its lacking and doesn't hold my interest the way D1 did. I'm simply able to see the reality both here and in other games. Bioware are moving away from large RPGs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age and are hard at work on their own "game as a service" in Anthem. EA just did a major change in direction on what was planned to be a single player Star Wars game and are instead rejigging it into a service as well. Ubisoft commented in an investor call a year or so ago that they were trying to move all of their future games into services. This is where games are going so remember: we vote with our dollars. That's the only language publishers will listen to.

I feel like what you’ve written here is one of the best thing I have ever read on the forums or reddit. I love when people “complain” in a nice way. You pointed out so many flaws this game has and the potential it has to be great. I just wanted to add that Krafty isn’t the only streamer to toss this bullshit of a game away. Even my friends list with the expansion had 1 1/2 pages of people on it compared to D1 and past DLC’s where I’d have 7-10 pages of friends on PSN. I personally refuse to play D2 and I refuse to give bungie any more money or my time until the manage to pull their head out of their ass. They also made me realize pre-ordering games is a waste of time. Nice post 👍🏻

Bravo! It was a very long time I read something this good. Bungie needs to take this to heart. I salute you Sibellae!

1 ReplyEdited by WP ScorpionWind: 12/10/2017 7:03:49 AMPlease do us all a favor and put this in ever social media, every blog site, EVER SINGLE PLACE BUNGIE CAN SEE THIS PIECE OF A BEAUTIFUL MASTER PEICE. Hell email or fax it to them. This is speaking from the heart of majority, if not the whole community, and you had put it into words that aren’t slamming and rubbing it in their face. Especially loved the ideas you had for what they could have for this DLC. I also thing that the melting pot at the center could have been some kind of Arkon’s forge like thing. And have the different offerings opening gates to different time streams and having a forth open to all 3 at once. Just my opinion but I suggest putting this in an email and linking this page to any place you can on bungie. They really need to see this. I Edit: the amount of hate this guy is getting is absolutely terrible, you people talk about how he’s wasting his time here, by making these comments and even these long drawn out comments, and by doing so you double waste ours/ you time by making something that’s not productive, or beneficial to anyone, when many people will scroll to and read it on such a amazing post expecting something good, and end up wasting our times. Like for reals have you heard of the old saying “if you don’t have anything good nice to say, don’t say anything”?
-
1 ReplyBungie, you really need to read this and take it to heart. I'm in the same boat and am running out of ways to defend you...it won't happen much longer unless some serious change occurs.

I was considering writing my own piece to Bungie but this post here says everything I would have but in a way I could not. As a newcomer to Destiny who fondly remembers my formative years spent playing Halo I must say I am disappointed in what Bungie has produced as a creator and become as a once shining example to the industry.

19 RepliesI love how diplomatic this post starts and then descends into the usual subjective drivel this forum is always over flowing with.

I will say this what you have said is so true this has been a constant for Bungie ever since they did Destiny 1 the only thing you can do is just hope that they will listen like they did for the taken King but that wasn't even bungee that was there live team that did that so wait and see what they do to the game once they get a hold of it.
-
As a community member, loyal fan, and concerned player, Bungie needs to see this more than anything. There's more I could go on and on about, but everything stated here is exactly what needs to be said. I've been so excited when new dlc's came out, but this expansion is already falling apart. The Bungie that makes this game now feels like they forgot how to make a good game, and lost all their morals along the way. If there is just one thing I can add to this post besides to share it everywhere, it's that I still remain hopeful. I hope Bungie takes their time on the next dlc and beyond that. I hope they reinvent systems and give us many more. I hope they take Eververse out of the game and make me work for all those beautiful pieces there. I hope they make me never forget what I just accomplished in the story and other moments in the game, because I honestly couldn't tell you what I did in the expansion or the base game that was memorable aside from the raids. I will remain hopeful, Bungie, but if you betray me, my friends, and this amazing community we love again, there will be no more Destiny. Get it right! -zepo98

Bungie thinks they’re infallible. No one is infallible. Not even Nintendo was infallible.

8 RepliesEdited by darran30: 12/8/2017 7:43:05 PMSorry to break it to you kid, but you just wasted about an hour of your life writing this. Loyalty means jack shit to Bungie ever since they signed a contract with Activi$ion. They are only interested in new players; idealy kids that have access to their parents credit card to max out their limit on eververse cosmetic shite. They’ve even just put up a job position on their careers page dedicated to designing and selling this garbage. Bungie just don’t give a fцck about people like you no more. #inb4ban - Ninjas don’t like truth.

story?? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL BUNGIE NEVER once told a good story if you thought that halo was a good story then you never experience anything of the sort. Metorid prime had a much better story then the first 3 halo games combined and there wasn't even a single dialog. to expect bungie to bring a story to a game is like watching a pig jumping off a barn over and over again attempting to fly. as for lore what lore???? if its not in game or even mentioned in game than is not lore. i told my bro for years that the halo books were not canon and they didn't matter and he ignored me and halo reach happen. the only difference hear is that they didn't try to sell you a book that didn't fit with the source material, trying to milk you. ( but then eververse happen am i right) i wasn't shocked at both destiny 1 and 2s failure at attempting to be good but i had to "try for myself and judged it after i bought it" i regretted it both times (even though i gave them a 2nd chance. well my fault for being stupid" bungee has never ben a good game company...ever....it just took everyone els this long to figure it out only reason i play is cus im not a shooter fan and this lvl of dequality is my expectation of a shooter.

7 RepliesI signed in just to up vote and speak my mind. My first forum post too, I believe. You've hit the nail on the head. I too am one of those hardcore Halo fans that followed Bungie through the years. I was so happy when they got the chance to bring Destiny to us with Activision but I've since realized why Microsoft didn't put up a fight when Bungie turned their backs on them. They've lost their spark. No pun intended. I wish Microsoft would have let them make what they wanted. Imagine Destiny but with Master Chief instead: Destiny set in the Halo universe. All the different armors, the vehicles, the enemies. It would have NPC characters and a story we had history with and gave a crap about. It would fleshed out that universe like never before and it would have been glorious. Instead what we got was a cheap knock-off and because of that Destiny feels like stale, shallow, heartless attempt at recreating the Halo glory days. Destiny is basically a lazy, large-scale carbon copy of Halo. I mean come on, look at the enemy variety and vehicles ffs. There are Ghosts ("Sparrow"), Scarabs ("Arsenal Walker"), Pelicans ("Thresher"), Brute Cycles ("Interceptor"), Covenant ("Fallen), Brutes ("Cabal"), Flood ("Hive")... I mean come ON! They couldn't be more blatant. The real reason Destiny lacks substance is because it is a rip off of Halo and Bungie's heart isn't in it. It just feels like they want the most money for as little effort as possible through shaders, Eververse, and lackluster overpriced downloadable content. I guess what I'm saying is that Destiny would have been better with Microsoft at the helm. I can't believe I just said that.

Well written. I usually see lots of text and move on. It just looked too pleasing and structured to scroll through. I remember waiting in lines waiting for Halo 2 and the H3 line had people wrapped around GameStop.

2 RepliesI have just received my refund from Microsoft for the base game Destiny 2. I am from the uk so “Under EU rules, a trader must repair, replace, reduce the price or give you a refund if goods you bought turn out to be faulty or do not look or work as advertised” My reason was the prestige nightfall and raid are no longer accessible to me, it was that simple
