Conservatives need to pull their head out of their ass about net neutrality

"Hurr durr muh free markets" We don't have a free market for internet service. The biggest ISP's have done such a wonderful job monopolizing their turf that any given consumer is lucky if they even have 2 choices for high speed internet. It's not like say, going out to dinner where if one restaurant sucks you just pick a different one and ignore it.

    • I consider myself a fiscal conservative and I believe abolishing net neutrality is stupid. Also, this slow/fast lane business would goof up a lot of programs just trying to live their abnormal lives.

It is exactly because of big government regulations like net neutrality that ISP's have been allowed to capture the market. Net neutrality regulations, like most all business regulations, favor companies that have already set up the infrastructure that allows them to comply. It prices new companies out of the market, by denying them the ability to compete on their own terms. We should give consumers the ability to decide what works best for them, rather than further entwining big government with existing corporations to corrupt the marketplace. Being a conservative is pretty neat, I should do this more often This was kind of a dumb joke so I'll try and post something more serious: if internet... providership (provision? idk lol)... should work through a healthy marketplace, how do we get from here to there? The reason I find "less government intervention" to be an incomplete solution is that it seems like setting up infrastructure is such a massive barrier to entry to begin with, and it gives the established companies a basically insurmountable advantage. So what is the business model that allows a new company to compete? Or, if the problem really is just big corporations being too cozy with the government, then how does that actually manifest in regulations and contracts? Can companies negotiate for exclusive rights to a market, or discounted operating fees?

            • I have 5 choices where I live. Blame government regulation and the absurd amount of money needed to start an ISP as to why there isn’t more competition.

Where I live I have one option for fast internet at 150 mbps or unreliable satellite at 50mbps or Verizon at 1mbps. Anyone who thinks getting rid of NN needs to stop sucking corporate dick.
