Has D2 actually succeeded for 'casual' gamers?

Regardless of whether you like the changes or not (I don't), I think we can all agree that Bungie has made the many controversial changes to the game in order to appeal to casual gamers. I keep hearing this as a justification for the decisions. What I want to know is, has the game actually succeeded in attracting and keeping these casual gamers?

  • I am a casual...and nope I don't like D2 approach. Mixing Special and Heavy weapons in 1 slot is the most hate I have. No good exotic too...

  • Just had a conversation about this at lunch with two Destiny 1 casuals...who don't play Destiny 2 and quit playing D1 right before RoI. One said he quit playing after trying to get the Black Spindle where he spent between 4 - 6 hours trying to get it with the help of two other noobs (one being the other guy at lunch with us) the other two got their Spindles with the help of a Super Sherpa. So two players who are let's say average or less than average try to carry someone who is less than average on one of the hardest missions up against a timer to get the Spindle. So they quit never doing endgame stuff. The raid nope. Nightfalls nope. I don't think it's a casual vs hardcore issue...I think it's a are you. Incompetent vs Competent. Do you suck at the game? That's what Bungie has done they made an everyone is a winner, everyone get a trophy game. You can reach max light without challenging yourself. Heck join a clan and let other people get there for you. I know several peeps that were not great at D1 and we drug them through the raids and some days I even felt like that guy when I couldn't do something right, but that made me try harder to perfect strats to get better and run all the endgame stuff in Hardmode. People want stuff handed to them...good players want a grind or challenge.

  • I consider myself a somewhat casual player.I never did raids in D1 but I loved it and this is why- All I did was grind patrols and 6v6 clash for level up packages. The joy of finally getting that God rolled weapon was so addictive and exciting it made D1 a game that never got boring to me because of that.Fast forward to D2 .I played it with my hunter for the first 2 months it was out and got bored with it .I took a few weeks off and came back and started using my Titan, got him up to about level 14 but realizing what was down the road after completing the campaign I just threw in the towel ..Im done. Can anybody relate to this?.This -blam!-ing game got boring real quick..

  • The split isn't casual v hardcore gamers. I'm a hardcore player who is enjoying the game. The split is between internally motivated and externally motivated players. The changes to the end game work for players who play the game largely for fun, and see the loot as toys to play with. The changes aren't working for players who play mainly for the loot, status versus other players, power gains, and other external rewards. Bungie has made the end game mainly about cosmetics and collecting, and it's not appealing to many externally motivated players.

    • I have been a casual since D1. I enjoyed the grind, and thought the game catered just enough to casuals in rise of iron. If they kept that model going into D2 i would have liked it better. Engram drops and special events (i.e. iron banner) have become unrewarding in D2. Factions have been castrated and replaced by planetary vendors who give underpowered weapons/armor. I still enjoy running around and shooting in D2, but wish my abilities didn't take such a harsh nerf on the recharge rates. I have a limited time to play each week so i will be a casual in any game i play until i retire, and that is a long time from now.

    • For the people on my friends list that play 6 hours or less a week the game is very fun for them. I also have several friends that tried D1 and got lost in the mechanics of ranking up and gave up, that tried D2 and have stuck with it. That is only for my friends so others may have a different reactions.

    • How many people have quit Destiny 2 since launch? It was at once 78%, but I think it’s much more since the IB backlash, the lukewarm previews of CoO and the current XP debacle.

      • Absolutely not! That assertion to support the concept of casual gamers is a very weak defense to assume that destiny has succeeded at all! The game sucks. Period. The posts that list why Destiny 2 sucks are the real feedback here. Myself and countless others have pointed out the nerfs and drawbacks of this 2nd game and those things matter. Not the chant about "casual gamers" Please stop giving an undeserving crowd credit for something they didnt ask for or create! The problem is the decisions, bad choices, and employees that made this game intentionally wrong; not players that are new or that play with leisure! Ive been playing since 1st day D1 and cant stand this 2nd game. Its not Destiny!

        • Active casual here. Other than most of the Hardcore points that I mostly agree with. (Rolled weapons, variety in pvp, end game) What gets me is all the useless vain real estate in d1 and d2. Pretty yes but not functional. Gave me that mass effect 1 feeling. Disappointing 😳

        • I can play the game for short periods of time, and sporadically, and the game is fun while I play it so I would say that it definitely succeeded for casual players. I hated in D1 feeling like I was always at a disadvantage due to not having time to do everything.

        • As an employed gamer with a family and a LIFE, I can say that the GAME has absolutely succeeded in being a great GAME. I wouldn't center my LIFE around it, but it's a GAME so yea... TLDR: get a life

          • Most truly casual gamers are probably just now picking the game up, due to waiting for it to go on sale for black Friday. They will enjoy the game for the most part, because its fun for about a month if you take your time. However, most will then leave the game for something else they picked up on sale and not come back to Destiny 2 to purchase DLC. Bungie will learn a hard lesson on their next full release if they continue down this path... Casual gamers don't pre-order, don't pay full price at initial release, and don't buy DLC.

Nope, I bailed pretty quick. My requirement is simply keep me entertained. Destiny I would even waste time looking for fastest routes around the planet's. I tried in d2 but kept coming back to why? I can just fast travel.

I don't won't to sound disrespectful but if someone are on the forums or watching and reading something related to destiny,,,,,,they are not a casual.... A casual player is like my brothers and my people at work. They play a game have fun and move one to another game without reading or looking for stuff in games on the internet. One of my friends bought D2 and he likes D2,I asked him about the end game and he responded: what do you mean by endgame? I just like to shoot aliens in the face! I explained what endgame is and he said: don't care Then I asked him about curse of Osiris and he responded: That's amazing,I'm gonna get the dlc,D2 is fun. So yeah D2 is a success for casuals IMO Casuals don't care for the endgame or the grind

            • No, I'm more of a casual Destiny player due to the fact that I merely don't have the time to play. I would love to be more hardcore and do the raid more and play more trials but I just don't have the time since I have 3 young kids, a full time job, and a business to run on the side. That being said, d2 is a big waste of time. Even as a casual d1 player I still tried to work towards getting great gear with the time I had and didn't feel like I was missing out just. I knew I wouldn't get to the light limit but that was ok because I knew I didn't have the time. I haven't played d2 in maybe a month now and I'm close to 300 power level on my characters... It's a complete joke. Sucks for the hardcore players. Oh and the crucible sucks big time. I used to play control all the time in d1, but I barely played it in d2... hoping for some change here but not very hopeful in that it'll be any good

              • You don't keep casual gamers. Sure you can make a game more accessible to casuals, but being casual means they don't devote themselves to a game. Past the first few weeks of gameplay Destiny 2 once again comes down to farming for gear. Casuals don't want that. The game is still aimed at hardcore gamers (just not very well)

              • As a casual player who absolutely loved D1, I HATE D2. D2 is an imposter wearing D1s skin. It's like they hollowed it out and sold us the shell.
